README

Winchester Model 1911 "Widowmaker"

When the Browning Auto-5 first hit the market at the turn of the century, it revolutionized the self-loading shotgun world. Browning first offered the design to Winchester, but the company rejected his offer, a mistake they soon regretted. Winchester set to work designing their own self-loading shotgun based on Browning's design, but development work would stretch into a years-long ordeal due to the near-complete control Browning's patents offered him.

Eventually, Winchester began to sell their new Model 1911 SL shotgun, but the weapon was far from perfect mechanically. Browning's patents protected the use of a bolt-mounted charging handle, so Winchester knurled a portion of the barrel so that the long-recoil shotgun could be charged by manually operating the barrel. This was an obvious safety hazard, and multiple fatalities were reported as a result of people charging the shotgun by bracing the stock against the ground, leaning over the muzzle, and chambering a round. Not-so-affectionately nicknamed the Widowmaker, the shotgun was not a strong seller and production was ceased by 1925.
