T-29 Prototype

When the US army encountered the STG-44 for the first time, they scrambled to find what's the best alternative way to be on the same levelled playing field. Many decided to work out the new challenges with new designs, some decided that, what if budget is more of a concern and that taking an existing gun to rebarrel it to fit what the US army had at that point was a better and more cost effective option?

Enter the T-29.

The T-29 prototype is literally an M3 grease gun that uses a few small parts from the M1 Carbine to make a fully automatic .30 Cal weapon that can be on the same competing level as the STG-44, after all, they had an abundance of these things around, the M3 was cheap, controllable and easy to produce, why not just scale it larger? The .30 Cal was a good intermediate round that might not have the same performance as the 7.92 Kurz but being similar enough and why fix something that ain't broke?

The SMG retains many of the same functionality, the dust cover had been lengthened to fit the slightly reworked bolt and its bolt face, the original M3 extractor for the .45 ACP had been replaced, the magazine catch is now the same as the M1 Carbine, slightly extended mag well and of course, longer barrel to compete it on the assault rifle front. The rate of fire had been mostly retained, with supposedly double spring to meet the hotter cartridge.
