Stranger Things

This mod introduces the Upside Down dimension and new enemies, bringing a new layer of tension to exploration and survival.

The Upside Down

Description

Access

Players can enter the Upside Down through portals that appear with the Demogorgon’s arrival.

Environment

Crossing over dramatically alters the world:

  • A blue mist affects the atmosphere.
  • All lights instantly shut off, including inside the ship.
  • The ship becomes fully disabled (no interactions or functionality).
  • Outside the dungeon, a red thunderstorm rages permanently (functions like Stormy).

Audio

  • Players inside the Upside Down can hear players in the normal world at reduced volume.
  • Players in the normal world cannot hear anyone inside the Upside Down.

Visibility Rules

Players, monsters, items and configurable game objects are only visible if the player is in the same dimension.

  • What exists in one world may be invisible in the other
  • …until you cross over.

Light Interaction

  • When a player in the Upside Down gets close to a dungeon light or a flashlight, the light starts flickering.
  • This can be used as a communication tool between players in different dimensions.

Antenna System

  • By default, walkie-talkie communication from the Upside Down is disabled.
  • Antennas can be purchased from the shop.
  • Antennas can only be placed in the normal world.
  • Players located in the Upside Down can only hear and speak through walkie-talkies if they are close to an antenna.
  • Players in the normal world do not need to be near an antenna to communicate.
  • Antennas have a battery that can be recharged in the ship.
  • Antennas can be used as melee weapons, but any strong impact destroys them.
    • Antennas deal 3 damage.

Mirrored Items

  • Copies of items that spawned at the start of the day also appear in the Upside Down.
  • When picking up a mirrored item, particles appear around it.
  • These particles become more intense as the player gets closer to its counterpart in the normal world.
  • Particle colors indicate distance:
    • Blue = very far
    • Purple = medium distance
    • Red = very close
  • Once close enough, the Upside Down player can target the normal-world item, but only if it is currently carried by another player.
    • When the target becomes valid, the normal-world item’s aura becomes visible.
  • Using the mirrored item consumes it and multiplies the value of the normal-world item by 3.

Enemies

Description

All enemies are part of the Hive-Mind ecosystem.

Demogorgon

Description

The Demogorgon exists in two distinct variants, each with a different hunting behavior and dimensional preference.

Global Dash Behavior

  • The Demogorgon can perform between 1 and 3 consecutive dashes.
  • After completing its dash sequence, it enters a cooldown of 15 seconds.
  • The dash can destroy doors, launching them as projectiles.

Demogorgon Hunter

Description

The Hunter focuses on pursuing players from the normal world.

Wandering Behavior

  • The Demogorgon Hunter prefers staying in the normal world.
  • If it is wandering while inside the Upside Down, it will move toward the nearest portal to return to the normal world.

Hunting Logic

  • When a player passes close to a portal and the teleport is not on cooldown:
    • The Demogorgon teleports to the portal.
    • Emits a global scream, alerting all players without revealing the target.
    • Enters a 30-second hunting phase.
  • During the hunting phase:
    • The Demogorgon can follow the targeted player anywhere without losing them.

Demogorgon Kidnapper

Description

The Kidnapper specializes in ambushing players and dragging them into the Upside Down.

Wandering Behavior

  • The Demogorgon Kidnapper prefers staying in the Upside Down.
  • If it is wandering while in the normal world:
    • It moves toward the portal it created.
    • Or, if unavailable, toward the nearest portal to return to the Upside Down.

Ambush Behavior

  • When detecting a normal-world player from the Upside Down at close range:
    • The Demogorgon silently creates a portal at its position.
    • It crosses dimensions without emitting a scream.
    • The created portal remains active but cannot be interacted with by players.

Kidnapping Logic

  • The Demogorgon attempts to grab the player using its dash to bring them into the Upside Down.
  • Whether the grab succeeds or not:
    • The Demogorgon returns to its created portal.
    • Re-enters the Upside Down with or without the player.
    • The portal then disappears.

Corruption Mechanic

  • If the player is taken into the Upside Down:
    • The player becomes corrupted.
    • The corrupted player is trapped in the Upside Down.
    • They are linked to a random corrupted portal, visible through walls.
  • The corrupted portal must be cleaned to escape:
    • The corrupted player cannot exit through any portal until it is cleaned.
    • This restriction applies only to the corrupted player.
  • To clean the portal:
    • The corrupted player must communicate with players in the normal world.
    • Normal-world players must be guided to the corrupted portal.
    • Interacting with the corrupted portal from the normal-world cleans it and removes the corruption.
  • Players in the Upside Down cannot exit through a corrupted portal, even if they are not corrupted themselves.

Combat Behavior

  • When dashing from the Upside Down:
    • The dash no longer grabs.
    • It instead deals heavy damage to the player.

Crustapikan Larvae

Description

A fast, ambushing creature that emerges from the ground.

  • Spawns outdoors only.
  • When spotting a player, it roars, then burrows underground.
  • Burrows toward the player, emerging at close range to dash at them.
  • Can also deliver light melee attacks.

Crustapikan

Description

A slow but devastating Hive-Mind commander that summons allies and controls battle flow.

  • Spawns outdoors only.
  • When detecting a player, the Crustapikan pounds the ground, spawning one Crustapikan Larvae.
  • It then emits a roar that alerts all nearby Hive-Mind creatures, who immediately rush toward the targeted player.

Behavior in Combat

  • Moves slowly but is extremely dangerous.
  • During a chase:
    • Can pull a rock from the ground and throw it at the player.
      • If the rock hits the ground, it may spawn a Crustapikan Larvae.
    • Has a one-shot melee attack if the player gets too close.

Vulnerability

  • The Crustapikan is immune to direct attacks.
  • It can only be defeated through the Hive-Mind system (details below).

Limadon

Description

An unstable indoor creature that relies on poison and self-destruction.

  • Spawns indoors only and cannot leave.
  • Has 10 HP by default.

Behavior

  • When detecting a player, it may jump onto them if its jump is available (20s cooldown):
    • The jump causes it to explode into a poisonous cloud in an area around itself.
    • If it had more than 4 HP when exploding:
      • It loses 4 HP.
      • Respawns along with a second Limadon.
        • The second Limadon spawns with only 2 HP.
        • It has the same abilities except for spawning another Limadon.
    • If it had 4 HP or less, it respawns alone.
    • In total, it can spawn up to two additional Limadons if left undamaged, each with a maximum of 2 HP.
  • If the jump is on cooldown:
    • It moves toward the player.
    • If close enough, it can charge an attack (10s cooldown):
      • After a 3-second charge, it triggers a poison explosion.
      • Unlike the jump, this explosion does not spawn another Limadon.
      • Hitting, stunning, or colliding with the Limadon during the charge immediately triggers the explosion.
  • If it reaches the player without using its abilities:
    • It can perform a basic melee attack dealing 20 damage.

Poison Effect

  • While poisoned, the player takes 1.5× damage from all sources.
  • Deals 30 damage over 10 seconds.

Hive-Mind System

Description

Hive-Mind Reactions

  • When a Hive-Mind creature is attacked and no Crustapikan is nearby, all other connected creatures are stunned.
    • This can cancel aggressive moves (dash, throw, ...).
  • If the attacked creature is near a Crustapikan, only the Crustapikan is stunned.

Linked Damage

  • If a Crustapikan is near a Hive-Mind creature that is attacked, the Crustapikan takes damage on behalf of the Hive-Mind.
  • This is the only way to kill a Crustapikan.
