Stashing: Overflow
Updated a month agoOverflow is a safety net. If an item cannot be placed into a matching stash, it goes into any chest in the same territory whose name contains overflow.
What counts as an Overflow stash
- Any allied chest inside the same territory whose name contains
overflow(case-insensitive) is treated as an Overflow stash. Examples:Overflow,Ore Overflow, overflow bin,backup-overflow. - Overflow stashes act only as a fallback for items that have no where to stash to. They are not considered when looking for matching homes for items.
- Overflow chests can be ignored by Logistics with the
''ignoring suffix.
The stash order of operations
When you stash from a player inventory or a station output, in order:
-
Match existing stacks first Logistics scans allied chests in the territory (skipping ignored chests listed below) and builds a list of stashes that already contain the same item. Items are merged into those stacks where possible.
-
Then use Overflow If any amount is left after step 1, Logistics tries Overflow stashes. It attempts to add as much as possible to the first Overflow chest, then the next, until either the item is fully stored or all Overflow stashes are full.
-
If nothing fits The leftover stays where it is. You will see a message that nothing could be stashed due to lack of space.
Notes about multiple Overflow chests
- Overflow stashes are checked in the order provided by the castle’s shared inventory list. In practice this often matches creation order, but there is no guaranteed sort. If you care which fills first, keep only one Overflow stash per territory.
What chests are deliberately ignored during matching
These chest names are skipped during the “match existing stacks” pass so they do not compete with your organized storage (unless also marked as a receiver so that the conveyor system will interact.):
- Chests whose name contains
salvage. These are reserved for Auto Salvage to feed a Devourer. - Chests whose name contains
spoils. These are reserved for the remainders from servant missions only. - Chests whose name contains
overflow. These are reserved as Overflow only. - Any chest whose name ends with
''(two single quotes). This is an opt out from logistics scans (unless also an overflow).
Capacity and partial stacks
- Transfers respect normal stack sizes and slot limits. Partial moves are normal.
- If an Overflow stash is partly full, Logistics tops it up, then moves on to the next Overflow chest.
- Inventories that are completely full are skipped automatically.
Territory scope and ownership
- Overflow works within a single territory. If you cross a border, Logistics will not consider chests in the neighboring territory.
- Only allied stashes are eligible. Enemy or neutral containers are ignored.
Conveyors and Overflow
- When conveyors distribute items to receivers, they consume from Overflow first to satisfy needs, then pull from sending stations. This keeps backlogs down and your network tidy.
Important Considerations
- The chest is inside the same territory as the stashing entity.
- The chest name contains
overflow. - The chest is not full and is a standard external inventory (a chest, not a workstation UI).
- The chest name does not end with
''unless you intend to exclude it. - You are allied with the castle heart that owns the chest.
FAQ
Can I have more than one Overflow chest? Yes. Logistics will try them in the engine’s list order until the item fits or everything is full.
Can Overflow take any item type? Yes. Overflow is type agnostic. Matching stashes still take priority when they exist.
Does salvage also act as Overflow?
No. salvage is reserved for feeding a Devourer and is skipped during matching. See Salvage section for more details.
What about conveyors, braziers, tombs, and similar systems? Those features are separate. Overflow is just a fallback storage target for items that do not have an obvious home.
