VeganWebdishing
A simple mod that blindly replaces the image, name, description, and catch blurb of every fish in WEBFISHING with tofu. Also replaces the image, name, and description of every bait with tiers of "Nooch" (nutritional yeast).
Every replaced item has its original name mentioned somewhere (catch blurb and/or description), for the practical purpose of completing achievements and quests.
Oh soy!
Why have you done this?
I'm vegan (btw), not only in what I eat or wear. I'm also vegan in how I think about non-human animals, and I at least do my best to be vegan in how I engage with media. I've been interested in WEBFISHING since release, because despite how I feel about how we as people perceive and treat non-human animals, I have always loved fishing in games. I think it's fun, I still do. WEBFISHING is a very well-designed game, and I've been genuinely enjoying my time playing it (with tofu). But despite that I can't just be comfy with what fishing as leisure represents.
Fishing is about deceiving and entrapping fish, mutilating their mouths, and suffocating them out of water. Catch and release is almost crueler to the fish than gutting and eating them. Their mouths are destroyed for sport and a photo op.
I was ready to never play WEBFISHING, but a friend bought it for me. I may still have not played it if I wasn't able to easily mod it, but thanks to tools like GDWeave, GDRE Tools, etc., and the simplicity of the Godot engine, I was able to do this in a day. I thought it was important to take the time to send a message. I wanted to give myself an excuse to play a fun game that represents something morally "questionable," and, most importantly, I wanted to do something really funny (in my opinion).
Veganism, to me, is no longer the sacrifice that it initially was to me. It no longer feels like just an act of disobedience and boycott. It is a healing practice. There's joy and fun to be had, delicious plants to be eaten, and Opulent Tofu to reel in with Incredible Nooch.
