Jester Mod 0.2.0 (experimental preview)

Author: HIMithyButler
Game target: Among Us Steam 2026.9.29 (v19.0), Windows x64
Loader target: BepInEx 6 IL2CPP, built and loaded previously with 6.0.0-be.789

This is an experimental multiplayer build. It compiles against the installed v19.0 assemblies, but the changes in this preview have not been tested in a live lobby. In particular, the raw custom Hazel message used for assignment and victory has not been verified through ordinary Steam servers. Do not treat a successful build as proof that online gameplay works.

What this preview implements

  • At role selection, the private-lobby host selects one connected player whose actual game role is base Crewmate. The game role is not replaced; Jester identity is mod metadata.
  • The host attempts to send the selected player ID and JesterCanVent value to modded clients using the existing Hazel RPC call ID 200.
  • The selected player's client gets a neutral-gray category reveal and a purple Jester role reveal using the game's intro screen components.
  • Each modded client locally changes the exile text to [Player Name] was the Jester. when its stored Jester ID matches a non-tied exile.
  • After the host confirms the matching vote and completed exile, the existing win flow sends a stock end-game transition and replaces the cached winner list with the Jester alone. The end reason remains the game's stock CrewmatesByVote; the game has no Jester GameOverReason. The title is changed to purple JESTER WINS! on modded clients that receive the victory message.
  • JesterCanVent is a BepInEx setting. The host's value is included in the assignment message; the default is false.
  • The plugin configures a stable Innersloth mod-registration GUID and calls the game's mod-stamp helper after ModManager.Awake.

The intro and win screens reuse the game's existing layouts and animations. This preview changes their labels/colors, not their backgrounds or animation assets. The stored role is not a native neutral RoleTypes entry, because v19.0 exposes no Jester role type. The Jester still has a base Crewmate game role for normal game logic.

Multiplayer requirements and limitations

  • Every player must install the same Jester Mod version. Unmodded players cannot receive or render the custom role reveal, exile message, or Jester winner result.
  • The mod uses a raw Hazel PlayerControl.HandleRpc hook with custom call ID 200. That ID is outside the installed game's vanilla RpcCalls enum, but its delivery through the official Steam relay is not confirmed. The mod GUID registration helps identify/filter the lobby; it does not make arbitrary RPC IDs supported or guarantee delivery.
  • If assignment delivery fails, clients can disagree about who the Jester is. If the victory message fails, a client may display the stock result. Use only a private test lobby with matching builds and inspect logs on every client.
  • The stock end-game reason remains CrewmatesByVote; the custom result is represented by the mod's cached-winner override and UI. Native stats/analytics may still categorize the game as a Crewmate vote win.
  • The Jester remains a vanilla Crewmate for tasks and other normal game rules. A Jester win only occurs if they are selected by a non-tied vote, actually exiled, the game is still active, and the host has not already triggered the result.
  • Host migration, late joins, mod/framework conflicts, and all game-over timing still need multiplayer testing.
  • The installed Reactor assembly is not referenced by this plugin. Reactor 2.5.1 is not a dependency for this build.

Install for local testing

  1. Use a separate modded profile or backup of your game directory. Keep an unmodded installation for normal play.
  2. Install a BepInEx 6 IL2CPP Windows x64 setup compatible with Among Us v19.0. The plugin was built against your local 6.0.0-be.789 installation. Do not install the old Among Us Thunderstore BepInEx pack blindly: its current listing identifies build 6.0.0-be.700 for Windows x86 games, which is not the configuration used for this x64 build.
  3. Extract this package and copy BepInEx/plugins/JesterMod.dll into the modded profile's BepInEx/plugins/ folder.
  4. Start Among Us once. BepInEx creates BepInEx/config/com.jestermod.plugin.cfg.
  5. To let the Jester use vents, change [Jester] JesterCanVent = false to true in that config on the host, then restart the game. Leave it false to block Jester vent access.
  6. Every tester should install this same package version. Create a private lobby, start a normal game, and check BepInEx/LogOutput.log on all clients.

Do not copy this DLL into an unmodded player profile. This package does not include BepInEx, Among Us files, Reactor, or other dependencies.

Suggested private-lobby test sequence

  1. Verify plugin startup, mod stamp, and registration GUID in the host log.
  2. Create a private lobby with enough real players to satisfy the game's normal start requirement; the mod does not lower it.
  3. Start a round; confirm the host logs exactly one selected base-Crewmate ID and each modded client logs the same received ID and vent setting.
  4. Confirm the selected player's client sees gray NEUTRAL, then purple JESTER and Get voted out to win!; other clients should see their ordinary reveal.
  5. With venting disabled, check the Jester cannot use a vent and an ordinary Crewmate still behaves normally. Repeat with the host setting enabled.
  6. Vote out the Jester without a tie. Confirm every modded client shows the Jester exile text and that the end screen lists only the Jester.
  7. In separate rounds, vote out someone else, tie a vote, kill the Jester, and disconnect the Jester. None should trigger the Jester result.
  8. Start another round and verify the old ID/result state does not carry over.
  9. Repeat after a host migration and with a player joining/leaving between rounds.

The above are test instructions, not test results. This build has only been compiled; these new behaviors still need live-game verification.

Diagnostics

Look in BepInEx/LogOutput.log for messages beginning with [JESTER], [JESTER][RPC], and Among Us mod registration. The existing F9 lobby RPC probe is off by default and can be enabled under [Testing]; it sends a one-shot test assignment in a private lobby without starting a match or changing a role. It is useful for transport diagnosis but does not establish that a Jester round or victory works.
