In the mod
Meet the White One and the Black One, then uncover larger presences as your encounters progress. The White One glows neon white and disappears after 12 seconds. The Black One has a stretched black player model with visible eyes, pursues the nearest eligible modded player, and can float through obstacles. Ordinary walls still hide its appearance.
The Black One is hostile in current versions. Contact can disconnect a modded guest. Hosts instead receive a simulated disconnect while their lobby stays running, with a return-to-play option.
Players need compatible installations to see shared custom encounters. For testing, press 6 to open the debug menu, then 1 for the White One or 2 for the Black One. Debug encounters do not advance the natural progression.
Lore — prepare for a long read!
The White One
A white entity. A weird, deformed imitation of a player. Bentley says the deformation is because it is trying to mimic the player, but gets the anatomy wrong.
Its concept design has a round white body, long skinny dangling legs, short bent arms, a round head, and a dark/red open mouth. It usually appears far away. Very rarely, it can appear hanging above the player or in a tree.
It does not attack. No cheap jumpscares. In the mod, the White One lasts exactly 12 seconds.
The Black One
Pure black. Taller and slimmer than a normal player, with very long arms. It rarely appears and watches the player. It is a stalker and spy.
Bentley says it gathers information about the player and reports that information to the Third Bell. Bentley explicitly says it is evil. It is controlled by the Third Bell.
The original implementation did not directly attack. Current versions do: the Black One can pursue and catch you.
The Bells
Bentley describes the Bells as the “hearts” of other entities: an external heart, core, or anchor. Destroying a Bell kills the entity connected to it.
We destroy the first two Bells, meaning two entities die. We do not know what those first two entities are yet, because we have not met them.
The Third Bell is connected to the Black One and controls it.
The Third Bell
ENORMOUS. Ben's size comparison had the Black One somewhat taller than a player, the player at normal scale, and the Third Bell absolutely fucking gigantic. More like a god-object than a normal creature.
It controls the Black One. The Black One reports information to it.
The One Beyond The Wall
The ??? entity. Its real name-data was absurdly huge. An ARG screenshot included:
FINDSTR: Line 17182636 is too long.
That was followed by gigantic encoded-looking garbage.
It uses a cloaking device. Bentley specifically compared the cloak concept to the Stranger from Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye. Like the Stranger, when the sun lines up correctly, its silhouette becomes visible despite the cloak.
The disturbing part is that it was already there. It does not suddenly spawn when revealed.
Ben's own size-comparison interpretation makes this thing even larger than the Third Bell, but that is Ben's theory/design interpretation, not confirmed Bentley canon.
The lore describes the ARG. Concept designs and story implications are not promises that every detail is implemented as a gameplay mechanic.
