Realism
BONELAB gunfire effects with selectable 3D muzzle flash styles, projectile-following tracers, separate effect toggles, and adjustable nearby-shot ear ringing.Realism — BONELAB code mod
Realism 3.0.7 is a MelonLoader DLL mod for BONELAB. It adds a Realism page to BoneMenu with separate subpages for each visual effect:
- Ear Ringing: independently enable or disable the 900 Hz ringing and set its volume from 0–100%. The tone builds with nearby gunfire and fades smoothly after shooting stops. In Fusion, remote shots trigger ringing only when the shooter is within 18 Unity units.
- Muzzle Flash: the Standard flash is preserved. Select one of the four style toggles—Standard, Compact Burst, Tapered Cone, or Split Jet—on this page. The check mark indicates the active style; only one can be active at once. Each selection now has a deliberately distinct silhouette, color profile, duration, and point-light tint: Standard keeps the original branched flash, Compact Burst is a broad radial star, Tapered Cone is a long orange plume, and Split Jet forks into two thick side flames. The selection applies to the next shot. The Enabled toggle is independent from sparks and smoke.
- Sparks, Smoke, and Bullet Tracers: each has its own BoneMenu page and independent Enabled toggle. When a live Marrow projectile is available, the tracer follows its actual transform and velocity until impact, so its head stays on the bullet's flight path. Weapons without an accessible live projectile use the muzzle direction and the 85-unit-per-second fallback tracer.
The flash is a brief, bright 3D cluster with a warm core, tapered flame and side tongues. Sparks have 3D heads and tails, with a small shaded smoke cluster. In Fusion, tracer size, light and muzzle offset are increased to improve visibility to the local player. On map changes, Realism clears scene-owned effects, refreshes its Unity references, and reattaches its BoneLib gun-fire hook. Each client needs Realism installed to render its own local effects.
Recoil and hand shaking are removed. The mod does not write to the held gun's position or rotation. Effects are generated at runtime and need no external asset files. The mod logs the first gun-fire event, tracer spawn/update, selected tracer shader and first effect failure to MelonLoader\Latest.log to help diagnose game-version differences. Actual post-processing bloom depends on the game's active render settings.
Requirements and install
- BONELAB for Windows with MelonLoader 0.7.x
- BoneLib installed in the same MelonLoader Mods folder (required for BoneMenu and gun-fire events)
Copy Realism.dll to <BONELAB folder>\Mods\. Start the game and open BoneMenu → Realism → Muzzle Flash. Choose one of the four style toggles; its check mark shows which flash will appear on the next shot. The variants use different 3D shapes: Standard has a core and irregular branches, Compact Burst has a round core with short radial petals, Tapered Cone has a long narrow plume, and Split Jet has diverging side tongues.
Build
Install the .NET 6 SDK and run this from the project folder, setting MelonLoaderDir to BONELAB's MelonLoader\net6 directory:
$env:MelonLoaderDir = 'C:\Path\To\BONELAB\MelonLoader\net6'
dotnet build .\Realism.csproj -c Release
The built DLL is written to bin\Release\net6.0\Realism.dll. This project uses runtime reflection for BoneLib and Unity game types, so it does not need BONELAB's generated IL2CPP assemblies at build time.
