Scorn_Dogs-BetterBuddy-1.0.1

DESCRIPTION

Buddy is useful when playing alone, but several of his tasks are limited or disabled when additional crew members are present.

These limits are part of his default behaviour. Most tasks are disabled above one or two crew members, hull repairs stop once the ship reaches 50% hull, and the combat station includes a built-in delay that causes Buddy to intentionally miss some shots.

Better Buddy removes these restrictions and adds an in-game menu that lets you enable or disable each change during a mission.

Nothing is forced. Every feature can be toggled individually, and the default behaviour can always be restored.

MAIN FEATURES

Help At Any Crew Size

Buddy has hidden crew-size limits for several tasks. Reviving, scanning, clearing the materia filter and following you on foot are solo only. Hull repair, core repair, ammo resupply and manning a gun are limited to two players.

This removes those limits, allowing Buddy to continue working with a full crew of 99. The limit is set high enough to work with mods that increase the lobby size.

Repair Until Hull Full

By default, Buddy starts repairing when the hull drops below 50% and stops as soon as it reaches 50% again, since the same threshold is used for both conditions.

With this enabled, Buddy still waits until the hull is damaged before starting repairs, but continues repairing until the hull is full or he runs out of repair tools.

Space Combat Aim(Ro)bot

Buddy normally alternates between aiming at a target for 1.5 seconds and deliberately aiming away from it for 1.5 seconds. This results in roughly half of his shots missing, which is especially noticeable with slower-firing weapons.

With this option enabled, Buddy keeps his aim on the target instead of intentionally looking away.

Smarter Job Order

Buddy chooses tasks based on priority values. Some of the default priorities produce unexpected results. Core repairs and ammo resupply have the same priority as idling in the canteen, while clearing the materia filter has a lower priority.

This can result in Buddy saying that he is going to clear the filters but never actually doing it.

This option changes the priorities to the following order:

Revive crewmate > Repair hull > Man a gun > Core repair
> Resupply ammo > Scan > Clear materia filter > Follow > Idle

An in-game menu

Look at Buddy and hold the third prompt, Buddy Enhancements. Hover over an option and release to toggle it.

A green tick means the option is enabled, while a red cross means it is disabled. The menu uses the game's existing radial menu system, so it works in the same way as the task wheel.

Your settings are saved between sessions.

INSTALLATION

Install MelonLoader 0.7.3 or newer into your Jump Space folder. Extract this archive into the same folder, so the file is located at

Jump Space\Mods\BetterBuddy.dll

Launch the game once. The first launch may take a few minutes while MelonLoader creates its support files. Later launches should return to normal startup times.

To uninstall, delete

Jump Space\Mods\BetterBuddy.dll

No other files need to be removed.

Settings are stored in

Jump Space\UserData\MelonPreferences.cfg

under [BetterBuddy] and can also be edited manually if preferred.

REQUIREMENTS

MelonLoader 0.7.3 or newer — not included with this mod. Download it from the official release page to get the latest version.

Only the host needs this mod. Buddy is controlled by the host during a session, so the host's installation determines his behaviour.

Other crew members can also install the mod and access the menu, but their settings will not affect Buddy. The menu indicates this when they are not the host.

No game files are modified. MelonLoader and Better Buddy only add their own files.
