DEFENSE
POPULATION:
Completely uninhabited. Former surface installations have collapsed or been reclaimed by time and weather. Occasional remnants of automated infrastructure still power on and off without purpose.
CONDITIONS:
Defense is a quiet, worn-down industrial moon wrapped in long-term decay. The surface is covered in fractured plateaus of dark stone and ash-dusted metal plating, as if the ground itself was once reinforced and later abandoned mid-collapse. Strong, inconsistent wind currents sweep through the terrain, producing deep, hollow whistles through broken structures. Visibility fluctuates due to drifting particulate fog that gathers in low valleys, often thick enough to obscure landmarks entirely. The sky remains permanently overcast, with faint luminous breaks that give the impression of something pressing down from above rather than shining down.
FAUNA:
Despite its abandoned state, Defense supports a surprisingly active ecosystem adapted to the harsh terrain. Most creatures are nocturnal or crepuscular, emerging during the brief low-visibility cycles when fog density peaks. Smaller organisms tend to travel in coordinated groups, moving through cracks in the stone and under metal overhangs, often reacting sharply to sound disturbances.
More notable fauna includes long-limbed scavenger entities that glide between elevated structures without touching the ground for extended periods, using the wind currents almost like pathways. These creatures are not aggressive unless approached too closely, but their movements suggest high territorial awareness, especially around elevated scrap zones. Below ground level, burrowing organisms periodically reshape sections of loose terrain, creating sudden collapses or sinkholes that can appear without warning.
Larger unidentified lifeforms are rarely seen directly, but evidence of their presence is consistent—distorted metal, displaced terrain, and deep rhythmic vibrations that travel through the ground at irregular intervals. Some scavengers appear to actively avoid certain regions entirely, implying the presence of dominant apex organisms that remain mostly unobserved.
Overall, the fauna of Defense behaves less like a typical ecosystem and more like a layered hierarchy of silent territorial control, where visibility is low and awareness is survival.
