SakuraSanctuary
WORK IN PROGRESS: bugs can happen! A cherry-blossom mountain replaces the second biome: sakura groves, rope bridges, pilgrim chains, a temple in the clouds, petal storms, yozakura nights. Everyone in the lobby needs the mod.⚠️ Before you install: turn off these mods
Sakura Sanctuary doesn't work together with other mods that change the map. If any of these are switched on, Sakura Sanctuary quietly turns itself off and you get the normal jungle:
- PLL Library
- All Biomes / All Biomes In One
- True Final Ascent
- Terrain Randomiser
- Terrain Customiser
- Peak Workshop
- Lost City
PLL Library is often installed automatically along with other mods and stays on after you disable the mod that brought it. Check your installed mods for it. In r2modman: Installed → click the mod → Disable, then restart the game.
⚠️ Work in progress
This mod is still being built, and bugs can happen. Every island builds its own mountain; each one is checked to have a way up, but we can't play them all.

Sakura Sanctuary
The second biome becomes a mountain in full cherry blossom. Instead of the Tropics or the Roots you climb weathered granite through sakura groves, past shrines, jizo and stone lanterns, over rope bridges and up pilgrim chains, to a temple hidden in the clouds at the top. There's no marked path: a pagoda on a rock spur near the summit shows you the direction now and then, the rest is up to you. Look around, find your own way, and don't get lost.
Every island gets its own mountain, and everyone on that island gets the same one.
Good to know
- Petal storms. When the wind chimes start ringing wildly, a storm of blossoms is coming. Out in the open it covers your face, makes you drowsy and pushes you hard (near an edge, that's dangerous): hide behind a tree or a rock, or hold an open umbrella. Listen for a crack: branches break off the cherries and fall. A friend can brush the petals off your face (interact).
- Mind your step. Wet, dark moss at the edge of a drop is slippery. Walk onto it and you go over the edge. Crouch across.
- Pilgrim chains hang down some cliffs. Grab one (interact) and climb it hand over hand like a vine; at the top keep pushing forward to pull yourself over the edge. Climbing the rock right beside a chain also costs far less stamina.
- Hanging lianas span a few gaps between the ways: grab on and climb across.
- Drifting logs in the plunge pool carry you along when you stand on them.
- Shrine stalls hand out real items: a paper umbrella (opens like the parasol, floats you down; it is paper, so it wears out after about 80 seconds open), hanami dango, matcha, a lucky charm (the next hard fall does you no harm), a firefly cage for the night. The suitcases on the mountain hold them too now and then.
- Neko plush. Now and then a suitcase holds a little calico plush cat. Hold the use button to squeeze her: she squeaks and meows for everyone around.
- Obake at night. After dark, little ghosts float beside the ways. Get too close and one gets cross and chases you (it steals some stamina). Shoo it with E, keep a lit lantern in your hand, or squeeze the neko plush.
- Japanese snacks and straw sandals: onigiri (filling), taiyaki (warms you), sakura mochi (wakes you up), and waraji that keep you from slipping on wet moss until they wear out.
- Kokeshi echo doll: set her down and she sings for 45 seconds so lost friends can find you. Sakura resin: sticky hands hold you against the wind (but climb a little slower).
- Temple cats. Four cats live on the mountain. Pet them (E) for a purr and a little stamina - and at night the ghosts don't dare come near them.
- Careful with mushrooms. Some of the brown ones are tsukiyotake - poisonous, and they look just like the good ones. At night they glow faintly green.
- Yaki dango. Hold your hanami dango over a campfire and it becomes grilled yaki dango with mitarashi glaze: more filling, more extra stamina. Don't leave it on too long.
- The tanuki trades whatever you hold for something else. He is a trickster.
- The daruma. Carry it up into the temple courtyard and see what happens.
- Yozakura. At night the lanterns glow, the old trees are lit and the fireflies come out.
- Not every plank bridge is as sturdy as it looks.
How to install
- Install r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager and pick PEAK.
- Search for Sakura Sanctuary and click Install.
- Make sure none of the mods at the top of this page are switched on.
- Click Start modded.
Playing with friends
- Everyone needs Sakura Sanctuary, in the same version. A player without it would see the normal jungle. If someone is missing the mod or has a different version, a warning shows up for everyone.
- The host's settings count for everyone.
- F6 (host only) brings everyone to the beach campfire right before the sanctuary.
Settings
Change these in your mod manager (r2modman: Config editor → mirts.SakuraSanctuary). In multiplayer only the host's settings count.
- Turn the sanctuary off: General → Enabled
- How often it appears: General → SpawnChance (1 = on every island)
- Breaking bridges off: Gameplay → BridgeHazards
- Wind gusts off: Gameplay → WindHazards
- Fewer falling petals / lower detail: Visuals → SakuraPetalDensity, GraphicsQuality
- Smoother rendering of the blossom crowns (on by default; off only if you see graphics glitches): Visuals → DepthPriming
- Sounds: Audio → AmbientVolume
Each setting has a short explanation in the file.
Known issues
- On weaker graphics cards the frame rate can still dip when you look over the whole mountain at once.
- Loading the island takes a few seconds longer while the mountain is built.
- Playing with friends has been tested much less than playing alone.
