BetterMultiplayer
If you're looking for mods that make the most out of this game without fundamentally changing the experience, this is the right modpack. If you ever get bored and want to add a few extra characters and Starstorm, you can do that and rely on the fact that this modpack consistently contains all of the good stuff that makes your multiplayer experience better.
The Mods
Fundamental mods in this pack include mods that increase the max player count, allow friends to join mid-game, etc.

2.0.1 - Updated the description because I forgot to mention PauseInMultiplayer is deprecated, sadly, so it's been removed.
2.0.0 - We're back babeyyyy! Again! Removed BetterUI since the creator apparently gutted it (drama! don't harass creators) and testing replacing it with HUDdleUP which may or may not be suitable, we'll see. Updated TooManyFriends to a working fork. That's it, assuming things don't break after further testing. Will work on BetterExtras and BetterSkins later.
