ThreeChoiceChests
Makes supported chests and equipment barrels offer three choices while preserving tier/category, with clearer candidate tooltips.ThreeChoiceChests
By Riiin.
Opening a supported chest now gives you three choices instead of immediately dropping one random reward.
The original rolled reward is always kept as one of the three options, while the other two are drawn from the same valid reward pool. Chest tier and category restrictions are preserved.
Supported containers
- Small Chest
- Invisible Chest
- Large Chest
- Legendary Chest
- Damage Chest
- Healing Chest
- Utility Chest
- Large Damage Chest
- Large Healing Chest
- Large Utility Chest
- Equipment Barrel
Multiplayer
ThreeChoiceChests works in multiplayer.
The player who opens a chest owns that reward. After a choice is made, the selected item is granted directly to that player instead of being left on the ground for someone else to steal.
If several rewards are waiting at once, they are handled by a global queue and shown one at a time. This is intentional for stability: only one ThreeChoice picker is active at once.
Sale Star support
Sale Star is fully supported.
If a supported chest produces multiple native rewards, each real reward becomes its own three-choice selection.
Each reward keeps the tier and category that the base game actually rolled. For example:
- a Large Chest that rolls a green reward and a red Sale Star bonus produces one green choice and one red choice;
- a Legendary Chest with Sale Star produces two separate red choices.
Sale Star itself is still controlled entirely by the base game. This mod only catches the rewards the game actually generates.
High-mobility support
Once a chest has been successfully opened, its ThreeChoice picker no longer cares how far away the opener moves.
You can sprint, launch, teleport, or otherwise leave the chest behind without causing the choice UI to repeatedly close and reopen.
Only ThreeChoiceChests' own picker ignores this distance check. Normal chest interaction range and normal Artifact of Command behavior are unchanged.
Candidate descriptions
For Simplified Chinese (zh-CN), ThreeChoiceChests includes a private set of 217 hand-authored short descriptions for vanilla items and equipment.
These descriptions include:
- clearer short-form effect summaries;
- reviewed on-hit / on-kill labels where useful;
- consistent mechanic coloring.
Candidate names still follow the game's active localization.
The private catalog does not replace global item names, pickup text, descriptions, or lore. Other languages and unknown/modded candidates fall back to their normal localized pickup descriptions.
It works with or without my independent Chinese Retranslation mod.
Scoreboard and pause behavior
- The scoreboard / inventory can be opened while a choice is pending.
- Opening it temporarily hides the choice UI without consuming or rerolling the reward.
- Closing it restores the same picker and candidates.
- Escape / pause-menu interruption recovery is supported.
- A reward is finalized only after a valid candidate is selected.
The Command Artifact information card is suppressed only for ThreeChoiceChests' internal picker. Normal Artifact of Command behavior is preserved.
Intentionally unchanged
These special containers keep their vanilla behavior:
- Lunar Pods
- Void Cradles
- Free Chests
- Command Chests
- Adaptive Chests
Installation
Install with r2modman / Thunderstore Mod Manager.
For manual installation, place ThreeChoiceChests.dll in a folder under:
BepInEx/plugins/
Compatibility
ThreeChoiceChests can coexist with UniversalPause.
Without UniversalPause, the mod uses its built-in single-player choice-pause fallback.
Multiplayer currently uses a stable global serial choice queue rather than simultaneous per-player pickers.
