Town Portal

Find a lost book, restore it, and open a door home from anywhere in the world.

Town Portal adds the Tome of Town Portal, a rune-etched spellbook that opens a temporary portal straight back to the bed you have claimed. Your friends can follow you through, and a return field at the other end lets everyone head back out to where you were. It feels like part of the game: no new portal network, no tags to manage, and it follows the same cargo rules as a normal wood portal.

Features

A door home. With the tome in your inventory, press Left Alt + H (controller: hold L2 and click the right stick). A blue-lit wood portal opens beside you.
Bring your friends. Anyone can walk through your door. They arrive at your bed, not their own, and don't need a tome.
A way back. A soft blue return field appears at your bed. Press E to return to the door. When the caster uses it, both ends close behind them.
Fair limits. Doors last 15 minutes, and the tome needs 5 minutes to rest between uses. Ore, metal bars and anything else a wood portal refuses are refused here too. Worlds with portals disabled or bosses loaded are respected.
A real find. The Mysterious Tome turns up in Meadows and Black Forest chests, and Haldor sells one once the Elder is defeated.
Fits the game's look. Both books use pixel-style textures that match Valheim's own furniture. The finished tome is warm brown leather with glowing cyan runes, and the Mysterious Tome is a dusty, worn grey-brown.
Works on existing worlds. No new world is needed. Existing chests get their chance at a tome the first time they load with the mod.

Getting the tome

1. Find a Mysterious Tome

Chests: about 1 in 4 loot chests in the Meadows and Black Forest contain one. It is added on top of the normal loot, so nothing else is replaced.
Haldor: sells one for 250 coins after the Elder is defeated.

Each chest rolls only once, including chests you looted before installing the mod. Barrels and player-built chests are not affected.

2. Restore it at a workbench (level 1)

The tome is not used up when you open a door, and it doesn't need to be equipped.

How it works

Carry the Tome of Town Portal and press Left Alt + H (or L2 + right stick click).
Walk through the door to arrive at your claimed bed (or the starting stones if you haven't claimed one).
Press E on the return field to go back. If you opened the door, this returns you and closes both ends, so send your friends through first.
Otherwise, the door and field close on their own after 15 minutes. The timer uses real time, so sleeping doesn't shorten it.

The portal reuses the game's own wood portal model at runtime. No game assets are included in this package.

Configuration

Settings are in BepInEx/config/com.townportal.mod.cfg. On a server, the server's values are used for everyone (except the key binding, which is per player). Restart the game after changing the cooldown or duration.

Installation

Install with r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager. Dependencies are installed automatically:

Multiplayer: every player and the dedicated server need the mod installed.

Manual install: copy plugins/TownPortal.dll into BepInEx/plugins/TownPortal/.

Console commands

With devcommands enabled:

Known limitations

There is no PvP lock yet. Anyone who reaches your door can follow you home until it closes.
