Living Villages

Living Villages brings new life to Valheim! Discover villages, take on quests, and earn rewards to further improve your character. Additional content planned!

Features

  • Up to six villages by default (can be changed in config file), optional homes are added where the terrain allows.
  • Vendor supply tiers that expand with world boss progression.
  • Five villager requests per quest chain, with permanent skill bonuses and a choice of chain rewards. Choose your reward at the elder before starting the next chain.
  • Turn in trophies to the elder for gold and experience.
  • Personal quest markers above villagers: a yellow exclamation mark for available quests, a light-grey question mark for active quests, and a yellow question mark when ready to turn in.
  • Specialty feed from the animal keeper upgrades tamed boars, wolves, lox, hens, Asksvin and moose, up to two stars.
  • Character attributes, paid attribute resets, and gear repairs for 5 gold at the forge master.
  • Opt-in XP parties for sharing creature-kill experience with online members throughout the world. Quest experience stays personal.
  • Keep track of your quests, spend attribute points, and manage your party through menus that fit Valheim's style.

Requirements

Valheim, BepInExPack Valheim and Jotunn. This build was developed and playtested on Valheim 1.0.15, with BepInExPack 5.4.2350 and Jotunn 2.30.1. Compatibility with older game versions is not established.

Install dependencies separately; they are not included in this download.

Installation

Install with a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager, or follow the manual installation steps below.

Close Valheim, install the dependencies, then copy the included BepInEx folder into your Valheim installation or mod-manager profile.

Specialty animal feed

Buy species-specific feed from the animal keeper. Put it in your hotbar, aim at a nearby tamed adult of the matching species, and use the hotbar key. Each use feeds one portion. Hover over the animal to see its saved progress.

Ten one-star portions upgrade a zero-star animal to one star. Ten two-star portions upgrade a one-star animal to two stars.

Animal One-star feed unlock Two-star feed unlock
Boar Available immediately Eikthyr
Wolf Bonemass Moder
Lox Moder Yagluth
Hen Yagluth The Queen
Asksvin The Queen Fader
Moose Fader Fader

Feed appears in the keeper's corresponding supply tier after the required boss has been defeated in that world. Feed progress stays with the animal across saves. These upgrades and quest markers work in existing Living Villages worlds.

Configuration and multiplayer

The first launch creates BepInEx/config/livingvillages.valheim.cfg. Close the game before editing configuration files.

Attribute benefits can be customized under [Attribute Benefits]. Set a benefit to 0 to disable it, disabled benefits will have its description hidden. Attributes with no enabled benefits cannot receive new points; existing ranks remain saved.

Poison resistance from Health and Stamina adds together up to the configured cap. The eitr regeneration cap limits only the bonus from attributes, not your total regeneration. Defaults preserve the original balance. Attribute benefit settings synchronize from the host/server in multiplayer; your local settings apply in solo play.

Village generation settings are under [Generation]:

Setting Default Purpose
VillageCount 6 Maximum villages, from 0 to 6.
EnableBestCandidateFallback false If normal placement finds no villages, retry up to two retained sites with relaxed terrain limits.
EnableHouseFallback false Allow relaxed terrain limits for optional houses, in both normal and fallback villages.
VillageSearchSeconds 30 Normal village search time limit, from 1 to 300 seconds.
HouseSearchSeconds 6 Shared optional-house search time limit, from 0 to 120 seconds. Set to 0 to skip houses.
PrepareVillagesBeforeEntry true Prepare unbuilt village areas during solo/host loading before the player enters.
VillagePreparationSeconds 120 Additional village preparation time limit, from 10 to 600 seconds.

The two fallback options are independent: enable either, one, both, or neither. Relaxed placement allows more terrain adjustment, so villages or houses may sit on steeper ground. Water, biome and clearance checks still apply; placement is not guaranteed. Village fallback can add up to eight seconds of searching. Searches may finish before their time limit. These settings affect new placements. Enable placement fallback if you are having issues with villages not generating.

Village preparation moves initial area generation into the solo/host loading screen and shows progress before entry. Generated zones are skipped. If preparation reaches its time limit, remaining areas load normally during play. Remote clients use normal server area loading. Some ordinary loading or rendering hitches may remain.

Quest rewards follow your character between worlds. Each character can earn up to 8 attribute points and 8 Adventurer Training rewards from chain finales, plus up to 48 bonus points per individual quest skill. Visiting another world does not reset these limits. Further quests can still award gold and experience.

All participants, including the server, need the same mod version. Attribute benefits use the server settings; keep other gameplay settings consistent between installations. Real multiplayer and dedicated-server testing remains less extensive than solo playtesting.
