Runic Storage

Version 1.4.0 — SmartSort & Inventory Trash

Turn a collection of mixed chests into organized, labeled storage, then clear unwanted inventory items with a protected, multi-select trashcan. Runic Storage 1.4.0 brings SmartSort and Inventory Trash into the main mod alongside Quick Stack, chest rules, restock, search, and customizable labels.

SmartSort: organize your storage area

SmartSort looks at the items in nearby chests, groups similar materials, combines compatible stacks, and automatically labels the results: Wood, Ores, Metal Bars, Food, and more. When space is limited, a chest may hold mixed categories. Empty chests become Spare Storage.

  1. Stand near at least two accessible chests and close your inventory.
  2. Press Left Alt + O to prepare a preview of the proposed chest contents.
  3. Review the preview, then press Left Alt + O again within 30 seconds to apply it. Escape cancels.

Your configured chests remain destinations. SmartSort can add matching items according to their existing rules without taking away their contents, rearranging their existing stacks, or replacing their rules and labels. Other eligible chests supply the items and receive the remaining category groups.

The default SmartSort radius is 10 meters, adjustable through SmartSort.RangeMeters and capped by the overall Storage range. SmartSort.OrganizeKey changes the shortcut; SmartSort.Enabled turns this feature off. Busy, inaccessible, private, or unsynchronized chests are skipped. SmartSort uses ordinary Valheim container inventories; ItemDrawers retain their separate Quick Stack/Restock support.

SmartSort checks that inventories, access, and rules still match the preview before applying changes. Configured container LockedSlots prevent SmartSort from running; chests containing protected items are skipped. A pre-apply diagnostic snapshot is saved under BepInEx/config/SmartSortBackups; it is recovery information, not an in-game Undo button.

Inventory Trash: select, review, delete

The trashcan sits between the weight and armor values beside the player inventory. Hold Shift + Alt and right-click an item to select it. Selected cells show a bright red outline; repeat the shortcut to unselect a stack. Select as many eligible stacks as you need, then click the trashcan.

The prompt asks “Permanently delete XX items?”, counting the individual items across all selected stacks.

Button What happens
Confirm Permanently deletes the selected items and clears their red outlines.
Cancel Closes the prompt, keeping the inventory open and the items selected.
Reset Closes the prompt and clears every selection without deleting anything.

Protected: hotbar cells, RunicInventory's dedicated armor/quick-slot row, locked cells, empty cells, equipped items, and quest items. Ordinary inventory rows—including the ordinary bottom row—can be selected. RunicInventory is optional; its existing yellow slot locks are honored when installed. Normal Alt + right-click locking remains available.

Moving or changing a selected stack clears its selection. Confirm rechecks the exact items and their protections before deletion. Closing the inventory clears the selection. Set Inventory Trash.Enabled = false to disable the trashcan.

Updating to 1.4.0

Update the existing RunicStorage package; both features are now included. Existing RunicStorage settings, chest rules, and labels are retained. If you used the separate SmartSort test build, disable or remove that test plugin before enabling RunicStorage 1.4.0. They must not run together. Test-build settings stay in their separate config; adjust the new settings in chazman.RunicStorage.cfg as needed.

Quick Stack one stack

Hold Ctrl + Shift and left-click a carried item to send only that stack into eligible nearby storage. This works with a chest open or with just your inventory open. The opened chest can receive items when its rules match, and other stacks of the same item stay in your inventory. If storage fills up, the remainder stays carried.

Ctrl + left-click keeps its vanilla transfer behavior. Clicks on items inside a chest are unchanged. Single-stack Quick Stack follows the same range, chest rules, and item protections as Quick Stack All.

Change Keys.QuickStackSingleModifier to customize the held keys, or set it to None to disable the shortcut. Left and right Ctrl, Shift, and Alt work interchangeably.

Controls

Action Default control Result
SmartSort Left Alt + O, then repeat to apply Previews and organizes nearby chests with automatic labels
Select for trash Shift + Alt + right-click Toggles an eligible carried stack for deletion
Review trash Click the inventory trashcan Opens Confirm / Cancel / Reset
Quick Stack one stack Ctrl + Shift + left-click a carried item Routes only the clicked stack into nearby storage
Quick Stack All Left Alt + Q Routes eligible carried items into nearby storage
Restock Left Alt + R Pulls configured supplies up to their target quantities
Search Left Alt + F Opens a searchable list of nearby stored items
Sort opened container Left Alt + S Sorts the opened chest while preserving locked slots
Store All Left Alt + A Moves eligible carried items into the opened chest
Consolidate Left Alt + C Combines compatible carried partial stacks

Quick Stack All works while standing near storage or with only your inventory open. Use the single-stack shortcut to route individual items while a chest is open. Restock and Search also work with a chest open.

Controller bindings are configurable. Hold JoyAltKeys, then use D-pad Down for Quick Stack, Up for Restock, Right for Search, Left for Consolidate, or JoyRStick to sort the opened chest.

Chest previews and search

Hover over an eligible chest to preview its contents. Search shows item kinds found in nearby accessible chests. Choose an item to highlight matching chests with animated yellow rings and light for 15 seconds.

Customize the search window through Search.MenuFontSize and Search.MenuFontColor. Font size ranges from 10 to 32. Available colors include Light Gray, White, Gold, Yellow, Orange, Red, Pink, Purple, Blue, Cyan, Turquoise, Green, and Lime.

Quick Stack rules

Open a placed chest and choose Quick Stack Rules.

  • Remember contents learns stored item types so Quick Stack can refill the chest even after its last item is removed.
  • Always accept selects exact item types. Groups accepts categories such as wood, ores, food, tools, or ammunition.
  • Only from biome restricts accepted items to selected biome associations. Any biome clears that filter.
  • Never accept excludes items from Quick Stack deliveries to this chest.
  • Preferred prioritizes this chest over equally specific Normal chests. Distance breaks remaining ties.
  • Accepted and Remembered let you review or remove selected and learned entries.

Routing prefers exact-item rules, then narrow groups, then broad groups. Chests without positive rules use remembered items or matching current contents. Full and inaccessible destinations are skipped.

Rules apply to both Quick Stack shortcuts. Manual transfers, Store All, crafting, and production can still place other items in the chest or consume its final item.

Group Examples
Equipment Weapons, Shields, Armor, Capes, Tools
Ammunition Arrows, Bolts, All Ammunition
Consumables Food, Health Foods, Stamina Foods, Balanced Foods, Eitr Foods, Potions
Resources Wood Materials, Stone Materials, Ores, Metal Bars, Seeds, Crops, Animal Materials
Other Trophies, Valuables, Crafting Ingredients
Biomes Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountains, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, Deep North

Biome groups describe an item's associations, not where that particular stack was collected. Use exact-item rules or custom groups for modded items without a built-in biome association.

Custom groups

Open Custom groups, select New group, name it, and choose members under Items. Select Save group, apply it under Groups, then save the chest's rules.

Applied groups are saved with the chest. Editing a reusable group does not change chests that already use it; deselect and reselect the group on those chests to apply the changes. Each library or chest supports up to 16 custom groups with 128 items per group. Chests also support up to 128 exact accepted types, excluded types, and remembered types each.

Chest labels

Add automatic or custom labels to the Front, Back, Left, Right, or Top of a placed chest. Choose a text color, Transparent/White/Black background, size, and position. Labels follow the chest, including its opening lid. No separate sign or materials are needed.

Automatic labels show up to three selected or remembered designations. Enter custom text to replace the automatic caption. Front is the chest's forward face; Left and Right are viewed while facing it. Adjust positioning for unusual chest shapes.

Bend and wrap

Choose Bend… in the rules editor. Up / down and Forward / backward each have minus/plus controls and a numeric field. Start with 1 or -1; decimals allow smaller changes. Zero is flat.

For rounded containers, enable Wrap around container. A wrap adjustment of 0 fits the container's bounds; negative values flatten the curve and positive values tighten it. Wrapping is available on the four side faces. Reset bends clears both bends and turns wrapping off.

Choose Done, then Save in the chest editor. Cancel discards your changes. Existing labels and rules are retained when updating.

Emojis

Choose Emojis beside the label field to insert one of 64 Food, Materials, Equipment, or Places icons. Supported emojis can also be pasted. Chest captions allow 96 UTF-16 units; each bundled emoji uses two units. Flags, skin tones, joined sequences, and emojis outside the picker are not included.

Emoji artwork: Twemoji, copyright Twitter, Inc. and other contributors, CC BY 4.0, from jdecked/twemoji. The graphics license is included in the DLL.

Installation and configuration

Install with a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager. BepInEx is the only required dependency. For a manual installation, place the DLL and its Translations folder together under BepInEx/plugins/RunicStorage.

Settings are stored in BepInEx/config/chazman.RunicStorage.cfg. Configuration Manager is optional. The included RunicStorage.cfg.example shows common settings.

Install the same version on participating clients and the server/host. Install it on hosts that add or remove chest items to keep automatic learning consistent. No other Runic mod is required.

Item protection and multiplayer

Storage uses loaded, accessible chests whose contents are synchronized. Chests another player is using are skipped. Your own opened chest is available to single-stack Quick Stack when its rules match. Wards, chest access restrictions, item capacity, and protected slots remain in effect.

Equipped items and configured hotbar protections are respected. With Runic Inventory installed, its Quick Stack slot locks also apply. If protection cannot be checked, the action stops. Crafting, Storage, and Production coordinate chest transfers when installed together.

Search and hover never move items. If a transfer is interrupted and requires recovery, inspect the affected items before continuing.

ItemDrawers and modded containers

Makail's ItemDrawers support is included. Assign an item to the drawer first. Quick Stack can refill an assigned empty drawer and deposit up to its capacity; it does not assign blank drawers.

[Modded Containers]
QuickStackPrefabIds = piece_drawer
PullPrefabIds = piece_drawer

QuickStackPrefabIds controls deposits; PullPrefabIds controls Restock. Blank lists disable the corresponding drawer support. RunicCrafting has its own pull settings. Ordinary modded chests using Valheim's normal inventory work automatically; this drawer support is for Makail's original ItemDrawers.

Spawned items follow ItemDrawers' normal deposit behavior. Items with incompatible quality, durability, custom data, or crafter information stay carried. Withdrawn items use normal backpack stack limits.

Languages

Runic Storage follows Valheim's selected language. Files belong in Translations/RunicStorage beside the DLL. Missing entries fall back to English. To add a translation, copy English.json to a file named for the selected language and translate the values while keeping the keys unchanged.
