Bifrost Breakout
Roaming monsters, migrating wildlife, warbands, unexpected encounters, and a world whose ecology changes as you progress.Bifrost Breakout
Public alpha for Valheim 1.0.17 with BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351.
Version 0.3.21 uses plugin identity ChorusReef.BifrostBreakout. Replace the
previous DLL rather than installing a second copy. Existing settings migrate
automatically and encounter saves are preserved. Optional integrations that
require the old plugin GUID need to target the new identity.
These are the words of Ulf, who has seen enough strange things in this land.
When Odin called warriors from Midgard, the road between worlds broke beneath their passing.
Now the beasts no longer keep to the lands appointed to them. Wolves hunt beneath foreign skies. Things from the deep crawl upon strange shores. Old enemies meet where they were never meant to meet, and make war upon one another.
If the Bifrost was meant to keep the worlds in their proper places, then it has failed.
Ulf advises you to keep your axe close.
The creatures of Valheim no longer stay politely inside their biomes.
Bifrost Breakout changes what can happen while travelling through Valheim.
Creatures wander beyond their usual territory. Warbands bring unusual enemies together. Rival factions meet in places where the base game normally keeps them apart, then fight according to Valheim's own AI and faction rules.
The encounters are built and tuned individually. Biomes, progression, star levels, group composition and frequency are chosen deliberately and tested in play.
Spawn situations; let Valheim resolve them.
Spoilers
The rest of this page describes many of Bifrost Breakout's encounters directly.
You do not need to read it before playing.
The encounters have been placed and tuned around biome progression, creature behavior and the character of each part of Valheim. If discovering something unexpected is part of the fun for you, I recommend stopping here and letting the mod introduce itself.
If you would rather know exactly what has changed, continue below.
Features
-
Breathing Mist — A permanent ambient Mistlands feature. Blue swirls and the native Trollstav particle attractor stir the mist near players. One local effect appears about every eight seconds, elevated 30m above nearby ground. Its windup lasts about 2.2 seconds, followed by the remainder of a six-second, 14m mist pulse. No meteor bombardment, fire rain or event warning. Native weather and creature behavior are unchanged. Effects clean up when leaving Mistlands or the world.
-
The Stalker — A fleeting Wraith-shaped shadow near the edge of Mistlands visibility. It fades when approached within 8–12m or watched directly; it is not an enemy. Local only: 25% attempt every 30 seconds, one figure at a time. Ordinary Odin and Wraith encounters are unchanged.
-
Ocean Growths — Unstarred tar slimes can appear at the sea surface after Bonemass, using their ordinary swimming and combat. Independent 8% chance per 600-second check, one per spawn with a nearby cap of one. Ocean Voltures remain very rare: 1% per 900-second check after Bonemass.
-
Infested Greydwarf nests — Surviving Black Forest nests gain one irregular ring of up to six ordinary wild tentacles. Native AI/factions are preserved. Roots do not regenerate and disappear after their parent nest is destroyed. Existing worlds work when surviving nests load. Enable/count settings live in
[Infested Greydwarf Nests]; blocked slots are skipped rather than forced. -
Terrain impacts — Selected ground attacks from Trolls, summoned Trolls, Lox, Fuling Berserkers, Seeker Soldiers, and Abominations scar terrain. Bifrost defaults to strength 3, a 1.5m dig radius, and a shared 10-second cooldown, with no Stone drops. Terrain edits persist. Deep North is excluded. Install Bifrost on the server and clients for the terrain-settings RPC. Bifrost's integrated Terrain Impact does not run when the standalone Terrain Impact mod is installed. The standalone mod keeps its own configuration. No separate Terrain Impact mod is required to use Bifrost's integrated version. In
ChorusReef.BifrostBreakout.cfg,[Terrain Impact]providesEnabled(defaulttrue) andStrength(default3, range1–20). Restart Valheim after changingEnabled; disabling does not undo existing terrain edits. In multiplayer, host/server strength controls future impacts. -
Roaming creatures — Creatures can appear outside their normal biomes. Early enemies may gain stars when wandering into more dangerous territory, while later-game intruders generally arrive without additional stars.
-
Warbands — Special groups bring creatures together in combinations that do not normally occur. Because vanilla factions remain intact, these encounters can turn into fights between the creatures themselves.
-
Day and night shifts — Every biome except Deep North changes character after sunset. Meadows undead become more prominent, Black Forest gains supernatural hunting parties, and the Plains become a night war between werewolves and Fuling sorcery. Swamp gains undead and Vile pressure; Mountains and Ashlands gain hunting packs/covens; Mistlands gains nighttime Soldier squads and rare Ghost parties; Ocean Wraiths become more noticeable. Night-only squad followers inherit Valheim's normal dawn-despawn behavior from their leader.
-
Meadows and Black Forest — Familiar early-game creatures remain relevant as Bifrost begins breaking down the normal boundaries between biomes. Tar pits can also appear outside their native Plains.
-
The Village — Existing Meadows Draugr villages are recognized at runtime without changing world generation, including saved villages instantiated by the console that are absent from Valheim's normal location-instance list. Their generated greathall/longhouse becomes a ritual center with a large Undead ward, dark cursed wood treatment, co-located demister, optional stone altar and green flames, a dormant Abomination, and one Draugr spawner protected from Undead friendly fire when it is destructible. Entering the ward's 35m ritual arena arms a player-containment boundary until the ward is destroyed. The exposed ward and four green torches are placed on terrain immediately beyond the longhouse entrance. Its normal 35m protection and shield flash make it the settlement's siege objective: destroy it before attacking the buildings. Temporary Mistlands dressing is optional and remains disabled when no safe runtime mist source exists. Killing both ward and ritual Abomination permanently completes the encounter and retires its added pieces. The exposed ward has 100 HP and ignores damage from Undead attackers. Entering its arena opens all loaded Village doors once, while the Abomination begins at the Village center.
-
Skygraves — Meadows can contain independent skyline encounters built from a full-sized dead Leviathan and a three-times-scale corrupted swamp tree. These do not contain or depend on tar pits. Development builds also keep one fixture near the Sacrificial Stones for direct testing. One ordinary unstarred Abomination waits on the corpse's summit. One complete vanilla
InfestedTree01Swamp-tree location is scaled uniformly to three times its normal size beneath the shell, retaining its natural guck growths and native colliders. There is no hidden ramp. The marked prototype's barnacles are infected red, appear to the player as Egg Sacs, and periodically release up to three nearby Oozers. Destroying twelve Egg Sacs persistently arms the island collapse and plays the native Leviathan groan/shake warning. A vanilla Trollstav meteor effect then announces a server-authoritative 42m impact sweep that delivers overwhelming chop, pickaxe, and blunt damage to vulnerable trees, mineable rocks, creatures, logs, and construction beneath the island. It does not summon a troll or deform terrain. Five ordinary mineable copper rocks remain in the impact field. The protected infested-tree support remains for a full 30 seconds, then disappears and leaves 40 Elder Bark. -
Tar anomalies — Tar pits can appear in the Meadows, Black Forest, Mistlands and Ashlands. Their Growths remain intact, and many are guarded by dormant ★★ Abominations.
-
Ocean and coastlines — Open water becomes considerably less dependable. Time spent swimming or travelling at sea can attract Serpents, including extremely dangerous variants. Bonemaws can appear along shorelines, and Ghost Ships may be found offshore. Ghost Ship hulls begin at 10% of a normal Karve's maximum health.
-
The skies after Bonemass — Once Bonemass is defeated, flying creatures from later biomes can begin appearing far from home, including over the Ocean.
-
Mountain Dvergr — Dvergr can establish strongholds in the Mountains and patrol the surrounding territory.
-
Meteor Trolls — After Moder, Trollstav-style Troll arrivals can strike the world as roaming encounters, using the same violent entrance seen in the Ashlands.
-
The Werewolf War — The Plains become a battleground between Fulings and northern predators. Daylight also admits a controlled mixture of other displaced creatures, so Wolves are only one part of the chaos. At night, Fenrings hunt with Ulvs, Cultists travel with clouds of ★★ bats, and more frequent Vile/Shaman pairs add Fuling sorcery to the battlefield.
-
Mistlands Surface Seeker Nests — Abandoned Dvergr excavations can become dense Seeker nurseries. A ★★ Seeker Soldier and other Seekers defend a pit filled with eggs. Destroying the central nest permanently clears a pocket of mist around the site.
-
Mistlands terrain breakers — The Mistlands receive additional creatures capable of smashing their way through its rock and terrain. Trolls, Seeker Soldiers, Morgens and other heavy creatures can turn an ordinary fight into accidental excavation work.
-
Ashlands Fortress Sorties — Charred Fortresses can respond to attackers instead of simply waiting behind their walls. Defenders may open the fortress barriers and sortie against nearby players.
-
Ashlands Fortress Wards — Fortresses are protected by destructible Dvergr Wards with a large no-build radius. Breaching the walls and destroying the Ward becomes part of taking control of the fortress.
-
Deep North — The Deep North is unaffected by Bifrost Breakout. It can be played through in the intended vanilla manner.
