DiscoveryJournal

By Dedryx · Version 0.1.0

A journal for everything your character has learned how to craft or build.

Learned something new but missed the popup? Open your journal to find the recipe, see its materials, and check where to craft or build it.

Features

  • Shows only recipes and build pieces your character knows.
  • Displays localized names, icons, material requirements, crafting stations and levels, and build tools/categories.
  • Tracks new entries with a yellow NEW badge and a count on the New tab.
  • Includes New, All, Crafting, and Building filters and title-only search.
  • Keeps a selected new entry visible until you select another entry, change search/filter, or close the journal.
  • Provides Mark All Read for all currently known entries.
  • Uses vanilla-styled panels, mouse-wheel scrolling, and a small pool of reusable rows for large journals.
  • Baselines existing characters without hundreds of false new-entry notifications.

Using the journal

Open inventory with Tab and click Journal on the crafting panel, below the repair hammer. Use Back to Inventory to return. The underlying inventory panels fade while the journal is open.

Search matches recipe and build-piece titles, with a short delay after typing. It does not search materials or reveal unknown recipes. Requirements show base amounts; ordinary upgrade costs and crafting bonuses are not simulated. Special enhancement requirements appear separately after the character discovers the corresponding station.

Optional: learn from nearby storage

Disabled by default. Enable this if you want materials brought home by friends to count as discoveries for your character without having to pick them up yourself.

The mod checks loaded, accessible player-built containers within the configured radius every seven seconds. World-generated loot chests and inaccessible storage do not qualify. Items are never moved or consumed. Vanilla still decides which recipes and build pieces become known, including its station and build-tool requirements.

Discoveries produce one vanilla-style notification per batch. Other players do not receive your discoveries or journal state.

Installation

Requires BepInExPack_Valheim (BepInEx 5). Built against Valheim 1.0.12.

  • Mod manager: install DiscoveryJournal and its BepInEx dependency.
  • Manual: extract the archive's BepInEx folder into your game installation or active mod-manager profile.

Install on the client only. The server and other players do not need this mod.

Configuration

Launch once to create BepInEx/config/Dedryx.DiscoveryJournal.cfg.

Setting Default Purpose
General / Enabled true Enables the mod.
Journal / ShowNotifications true Enables journal discovery notifications.
Shared Discovery / LearnFromNearbyStorage false Enables optional storage discovery.
Shared Discovery / StorageDiscoveryRadius 20 Radius in metres, from 1 to 100.
Shared Discovery / RequireContainerAccess true Permission checks remain mandatory in 0.1.0, even if set to false.
Debug / DebugLogging false Enables diagnostic logging.

Saves and compatibility

Read/unread state is saved per character in BepInEx/config/DiscoveryJournal/<character-ID>.xml. It follows the character across worlds on the same installation. Copy that file when moving the character to another installation; it is not cloud-synchronized by this mod.

The journal uses live game data and narrow UI additions. Compatibility with every content/UI mod is not guaranteed. Mouse and keyboard are the primary controls; controller navigation has not been fully validated. Server-only custom storage permissions cannot be verified locally, so leave storage discovery disabled with those systems unless tested.

DiscoveryJournal does not add custom networking or modify global progression keys. Optional storage learning changes your character's normal item knowledge; ordinary vanilla gameplay may subsequently use that knowledge for progression checks.
