You will not have to collect souls with your lantern. You will obtain your desired first gem via Marketplace quests. Choose the Quest for the gem you like and complete it. When receiving the gem, the first upgrade will be unlocked at Jewelcrafting table. You will need Cores for all upgrades. First three upgrades Surtling cores and the final upgrade is a blackcore. Other requirements are trophies of the selected gem monster. For bosses it will have a random trophy of their biome along with the boss trophy.
