The Lyngvi Wardens

Four souls. One journey.

Death does not always end a warrior's oath.

Across the mists of Valheim, four fallen fighters answer your call: Bodvar, Starkad, Orvar and Egil. They travel as a small undead honor guard, keeping watch while you build, walking the wilds at your side, and taking their places when battle comes.

The Lyngvi Wardens was made especially with solo play in mind. Valheim can be a lonely journey, and sometimes it is simply more fun to cross a dark forest, enter an old burial chamber, or return home after a long expedition with a small band of familiar warriors around you. The Wardens are not an army and they are not ordinary followers. They patrol around you like a guard, react to the fights you enter, return after death, and grow stronger as your own saga advances.

The Four Wardens

Bodvar — The Shield-Bearer

Inspired by the legendary Bödvar Bjarki, Bodvar is the wall at the front of the formation.

He carries a mace and a Nord Greatshield, possesses the largest health pool of the four Wardens, and actively blocks nearby attacks. His poison-touched strikes mark him as the enduring guardian of the group.

Role: Tank / Shield-Bearer
Element: Poison

When the fighting stops, Bodvar keeps a wider perimeter around the player instead of standing at your feet.

Starkad — The Berserker

Inspired by Starkaðr, Starkad is the Warden who meets violence with violence.

His burning skeletal form carries a flaming greatsword into close combat. He fights without a shield and presses directly into the enemy line.

Role: Berserker
Element: Fire

Orvar — The Marksman

Inspired by Örvar-Oddr, Orvar is the farthest-reaching member of the honor guard.

He fights with a large longbow, keeps to the back line, and prefers to engage from a distance. When enemies begin closing the gap, Orvar gives ground and continues the fight from farther away.

Role: Long-range Marksman
Element: Frost

Egil — The Skirmisher

Inspired by the legendary archer Egil, the fourth Warden provides faster ranged support closer to the battle.

Egil uses a Finewood Bow and fights more aggressively than Orvar, maintaining pressure while still retreating when an enemy reaches dangerous range.

Role: Ranged Skirmisher
Element: Lightning

An Honor Guard, Not a Follow Train

The Wardens do not simply stack behind the player.

Outside combat they spread into their own patrol spaces around you, creating the feeling of travelling with a small guard rather than dragging four pets through the world. Bodvar watches the wider perimeter, Starkad remains closer to the front, Orvar keeps to the back line, and Egil patrols between those roles.

When combat begins, their individual combat behaviour takes over. The Wardens also share awareness of nearby active threats, allowing the group to respond when the player or another Warden is already engaged.

Summon and Dismiss

Version 1.3 adds direct control over whether the Wardens travel with you.

Default hotkey: Left Alt + Z

Press the hotkey while the Wardens are present and they return to the mists. Press it again and they answer your call.

The hotkey can be changed through the BepInEx configuration.

The summoned/dismissed state is stored per character and survives logout. A Warden's health percentage is remembered when dismissed, and an unfinished resurrection timer remains unfinished when the Wardens are called again.

Console commands are also available:

wardens summon
wardens dismiss
wardens toggle
wardens regroup

wardens regroup brings the active Wardens back into formation around the player without dismissing them.

Death and Return

The Wardens can fall in battle.

When one dies, that Warden remains gone for approximately 20 seconds before returning near the player. The others remain in the fight.

All four Wardens regenerate approximately 2% of their maximum health per second, including during combat.

Progression

The Wardens grow with the boss progression of your character.

Character progression Warden tier
No boss defeated Meadows
Eikthyr defeated Black Forest
The Elder defeated Swamp
Bonemass defeated Mountain
Moder defeated Plains
Yagluth defeated Mistlands
The Queen defeated Ashlands
Fader defeated Deep North

Their strength follows your saga rather than the biome beneath your feet.

Dungeons and Interiors

The Wardens follow the player through interior transitions and dungeon entrances.

Version 1.3 improves their behaviour in tight spaces:

  • the player can pass through the Wardens;
  • Wardens can pass through one another;
  • Bodvar and Starkad use a more compact physical footprint inside interiors;
  • the two larger melee Wardens use standard Skeleton pathfinding;
  • Wardens that become stuck behind interior geometry are recovered much sooner;
  • wardens regroup can be used as a manual recovery command.

Their visual size is unchanged.

Persistence

The Wardens are persistent companions tied to the player.

Their identities, progression, death and return systems, interior handling, elemental roles and patrol behaviour continue across normal play sessions. Dismissing the Wardens is separate from killing them and is remembered by the character.

Bug Reports

When reporting a problem, please include the Valheim, BepInEx and Jötunn versions, whether the game is single-player or multiplayer, the affected Warden, what happened immediately before the issue, and LogOutput.log when possible.

For AI or dungeon movement issues, a short description of the room or combat situation is especially useful.
