JevZiplines

This mod adds ziplines to Valheim. Place posts anywhere, wire them to each other however you like and ride downhill. Fully synced on servers.

Screenshots are in SCREENSHOTS.md and short clips in DEMONSTRATION.md.

Features

  • A zipline post in the hammer's build menu, under the Transport tag. It costs 8 wood and 2 iron.
  • Each post has a wing on the left and on the right, so one row of posts can carry two lanes.
  • Press E on a wing to string a cable from it for one chain, then E on a wing of another post to plug the other end in.
  • E on a wing with a cable unplugs the end on your side so you can plug it in elsewhere. Shift+E strings another cable from the same wing.
  • While carrying a cable, E on the wing it hangs from takes it down and gives the chain back.
  • The carried cable turns red once it's longer than a cable can be. Walk twice that far and it slips from your hands, and the chain comes back.
  • E on a post rides the cable running downhill on your side. You pass through each post on the way while the line keeps going down.
  • A sharp bend costs speed, and you brake before the last post. Jump to let go and keep your momentum.
  • Lanes can split, zigzag or cross each other.
  • Pointing at a wing shows the cable's length against the limit, or why it won't fit: too long, too flat, too low, blocked, already taken or running across the post.
  • Tearing down a post drops one chain for each cable on it, and anyone riding those cables falls off.
  • Other players see your cables, the end you carry and you riding.
  • Follows your game language, all 24 the game ships with. Key hints show controller buttons when you play on a gamepad, and both switch the moment you change them.

Configuration

The settings are in BepInEx/config/JevMods.JevZiplines.cfg, created on the first launch.

  • MaxLength: the longest cable between two posts, in meters (default 80).
  • Speed: the speed limit on a cable, in m/s (default 14). Gravity sets the pace below it.

On a server, the server's values apply to every player.

Building from source

To build you need Windows, the .NET SDK 8 or newer (with the .NET Framework 4.8 developer pack), Valheim and BepInEx. The easiest way to get BepInEx is to install BepInExPack_Valheim in a Thunderstore Mod Manager profile.

git clone https://github.com/JevMods/JevZiplines.git
cd JevZiplines
dotnet build src/JevZiplines -c Release

Then copy src/JevZiplines/bin/Release/JevZiplines.dll into BepInEx/plugins.

The build looks for Valheim through Steam and for BepInEx in the Default profile of the Thunderstore Mod Manager. If yours live elsewhere, pass the paths:

dotnet build src/JevZiplines -c Release -p:ValheimDir="D:\Games\Valheim" -p:BepInExDir="D:\Games\Valheim\BepInEx"

You can also set the VALHEIM_INSTALL environment variable. With no Valheim install at all, point ManagedDir at the valheim_server_Data/Managed folder of the free Valheim Dedicated Server (Steam app 896660). The GitHub workflow does exactly that.

Notes

  • Everyone on a server needs the mod, because it adds a new piece.
  • A cable only runs downhill, so build the start post higher than the end: on a hillside, a cliff edge, a roof or a tower. A level cable is refused.
  • The arm sits across the line, so face each post along the line when you place it.
  • The posts are about 3 meters tall and the cable has to clear the ground under the rider, so pick a line over open ground.
  • Needs Jotunn.
