Forge Rework

Refine your gear at Valheim's Forge of Potential with configurable success chances and a maximum item level.

Failed attempts consume the normal idol cost and leave your gear intact. No destruction, downgrade, durability loss, or damaging failure explosion.

How it works

Result Gear Idol cost
Success Gains one quality level Consumed
Failure Keeps its current quality Consumed
Blocked attempt Unchanged Nothing consumed

Successful refinement repairs and unequips the item, as ordinary upgrades do, while preserving its identity and custom data. Normal game eligibility and idol requirements still apply.

Ordinary crafting and other crafting stations keep their usual behavior. Forge of Idols is optional and can be installed alongside this mod for idol conversions and tier upgrades.

Using the forge

  1. Bring eligible gear and the required idols to the Forge of Potential.
  2. Select the gear and check Chance To Upgrade.
  3. Attempt refinement to gain one quality level on success.

Items at the configured level cap or with a 0% chance display MAX. Their names and icons are dimmed, but they remain selectable for inspection. Attempts are disabled and consume nothing.

Default success chances

Level means the item's displayed quality, not the number of forge upgrades. Normal gear starts at quality 1.

Upgrade Success chance
1 → 2 90%
2 → 3 80%
3 → 4 70%
4 → 5 60%
5 → 6 50%
6 → 7 40%
7 → 8 30%
8 → 9 20%
9 → 10 10%
Quality 10 or higher Blocked; no cost

Installation

Install through Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman. The manager installs these required dependencies:

  • BepInExPack Valheim
  • Conditional Config Sync 1.0.9+

For multiplayer, install Forge Rework and its dependencies on the server and every client. Restart after installation. Use the same release on all peers.

For a manual install, place ForgeRework.dll in BepInEx/plugins/ForgeRework and install Conditional Config Sync, including both of its DLLs. Keep only one copy of Forge Rework installed.

Configuration

The first launch creates:

BepInEx/config/MerlinofMines.ForgeRework.cfg

Section Setting Default Effect
Levels Min Level 0 Quality where the success chance starts dropping
Levels Max Level 10 Highest resulting quality; 0 removes this cap
Probabilities Max Probability 100 Starting success chance, in percent
Probabilities Min Probability 0 Lowest success chance, in percent
Probabilities Probability Dropoff Per Level 10 Percentage points lost per quality level above Min Level

All probability settings use whole numbers from 0 to 100. Existing decimal settings are rounded automatically.

How the settings interact

  • Below Min Level, success stays at Max Probability. Min Level does not change an item's initial quality or eligibility.
  • Above Min Level, each quality level reduces the chance by Probability Dropoff Per Level, down to Min Probability.
  • Max Level is a separate hard cap. It blocks further attempts even when the success chance is positive. Existing gear above the cap stays unchanged.
  • A 0% chance blocks attempts even with the level cap disabled.
  • Min Probability must not exceed Max Probability. Invalid combinations disable refinement until corrected and produce a log warning.

For the exact calculation:

chance = max(Min Probability,
Max Probability - Probability Dropoff Per Level
             * max(0, currentQuality - Min Level))

Example: constant 25% chance up to quality 20

Set Max Probability = 25, Min Probability = 25, Probability Dropoff Per Level = 0, and Max Level = 20.

Every eligible attempt has a 25% chance. Quality 19 → 20 is allowed; quality 20 → 21 is blocked.

Example: decreasing odds with a 20% floor

Keep Min Level = 0, Max Probability = 100, and Probability Dropoff Per Level = 10. Set Min Probability = 20 and Max Level = 15.

Quality 4 has a 60% chance, quality 7 has a 30% chance, and qualities 8–14 have a 20% chance. Quality 15 and above are blocked.

Multiplayer and dedicated servers

The server controls all five settings. Only server administrators may edit the shared rules; there is no configuration-lock toggle. Solo play uses local settings.

  • Clients wait for initial synchronization before refining.
  • Server values override local settings while connected. Disconnecting restores local values.
  • Changes through Configuration Manager apply immediately.
  • Restart after editing the configuration file externally. On a dedicated server, restart that server.

Refinement rolls and inventory changes run on the player's client. Configuration synchronization does not provide server-side anti-cheat.
