MySix Cartographer

In testing. An early version for the MySix group to try out: it may change, and anything odd is worth reporting.

Finding that troll cave again, or the copper you passed three days ago, means pins you never placed. The Cartographer marks them for you, on a map tab of its own, shared by everyone on the server.

  • Red wisps drift by the lore runestones at night. Catch one as you would any wisp; a caught one flies back in after about 3 minutes.
  • The Cartographer: 1 red wisp, 5 raspberries and 2 wood, made at a workbench. Use it from the inventory to send it out or call it back. It circles you as a dim red light and takes no equipment slot.
  • While it is out it marks what you pass, from further away the bigger the place: dungeons, ruins, villages, towers, bosses, shipwrecks, lore runestones, ore, berry patches, mushrooms, seeds, nests and more, biome by biome. It also uncovers the tab's map wherever it goes.
  • Never marked twice: a whole ruin or village is one mark, and clusters of berries or ore fold into one.
  • Gone when gone: a nest you destroy, a hive you take, or a ruin broken down to nothing disappears from the map. A ruin counts only while at least a tenth of its old building pieces or furniture stand; dolmens, where skeletons rise at night, are barrows, and stone circles standing stones.
  • Portals, homes and boats are marked by the server for everyone, Cartographer or not: every portal with its tag, every player's building with a fire or other heat in it or by it, and every boat, followed as it sails.
  • The Cartographer tab sits at the top of the map, beside your own, and the minimap follows whichever you choose. Other players, traders and the places the game marks show there too. Click a kind in the legend to hide or show it, and zoom in closer than on your own map.
  • Click a mark to cross it off when it's done (a cleared dungeon, a mined-out deposit), for everyone. Alt-click to name it, say whose house it is. Right-click hides it from everyone's map; an option shows hidden marks faded. Raids, your death marker and pings show there just as on your own map. With a controller (Steam Deck), LB crosses off, RB hides and A names the mark at the map's centre.
  • Setting Cartographer.AlwaysOn (server, off by default): everyone maps all the time, with no wisps to catch and nothing to carry.
  • Icon size: a slider on the tab makes its icons bigger or smaller, on the map and the minimap alike, from half to twice their usual size, the usual size in the middle (each player's own; setting Cartographer.IconSize, 50 to 200%).
  • Colour or black and white: the tab's icons are drawn in the game's own map style, in colour by default; an option on the tab switches yours to black and white. Each boss has its own head.
  • Hide your Cartographer wisp: an option on the tab hides the wisp following you, for everyone, while it keeps mapping.
  • Detailed map (a tick box on the tab, off by default, each player's own choice): zoomed in, the tab's map is drawn in detail, on the minimap too. Buildings are drawn in their materials with dark outlines, walls and fences as bands, doors and gates in amber. Trees are drawn by kind (pines, firs, birches, oaks, beeches, the swamp's dead trees, snowy trees, Ashlands and Mistlands trees), along with rocks, fallen trunks, giant bones and roots. Dug, paved and tilled ground shows too. The server draws these from the world itself, wherever the Cartographers have explored, and sends the parts you look at slowly, so the game's own traffic always comes first. It draws every explored part in the background, round players first, draws a part again only when something there is built, cut down, mined, moved or dug, and keeps what it has drawn in a file of its own, never in the world's save. Unexplored parts are hidden under the game's own fog. An admin can turn the detailed map off for everyone with Cartographer.DetailedMapAllowed (server): the server then draws and sends nothing and deletes what it drew. Underneath, your own game draws a sharp map of the land from the world's seed, with each biome's own ground and water and clear borders between biomes.
  • Kept with the world: the marks - crossed off, hidden and named as they are - and the Cartographers' explored map are kept inside the world save, in one small record far past the world's edge, so they go wherever the world goes: Steam Cloud, another computer, a server. The world's copy is the one used; a file beside the world is kept as a backup, and is how a world from before this version brings its marks into the world, once, at its next save. Your own choices on the tab - colours, kinds hidden in the legend, hidden marks shown, your wisp hidden, the detailed map on or off - are kept in the world for you too. The detailed map is kept only in a file beside the world, and is drawn again wherever it is missing. The red wisps by the runestones are part of the world, and a Cartographer or red wisp you carry is in your character's bags like any item, so it is lost if you later remove the mod.
  • Everyone who plays together needs it, the server included.

Part of the MySix mod suite. Every mod in the suite needs MySix Core, which adds the in-game mysix command for reading and changing settings. Settings are kept in the world itself, so it plays the same on any computer or server: one for everyone is changed once by an admin or the host, and each player's own choices are kept in the world for them.

Installing

Install with a mod manager - the Thunderstore Mod Manager, Gale and r2modman all work - or unzip the DLL into BepInEx/plugins yourself. Everyone playing together should run the same versions.

Settings

The Settings wiki page lists this mod's 15 settings: what each does, its choices and default, who can change it, and the exact command to type. In short: press F5 in game to open the console and type mysix to list every setting, mysix set <setting> <value> to change one.

Languages

Every MySix mod supports all the languages Valheim offers: whatever language you play the game in, the text these mods show is in that language too. Abenaki is the one exception for now - there it shows in English, as we could not find a translation we trust. We mainly test in English, but we will do our best to support every language the game supports; if something reads wrong in yours, please let us know.

Note on achievements

Valheim switches achievements off for anyone with a mod installed. MySix Mods Not Cheating, part of the MySix bundle, keeps them working.

Version 0.6.5. The Changelog tab lists what changed in each release.
