DeadReckoning
No-map worlds without a free compass: away from a base the build ghost turns with the camera, it hides at sea, and a dungeon vegvisir's bearing is replayed at the exit door. Client-only.DeadReckoning
On a world without a map, Valheim still gives you one free compass: raise the hammer, turn a piece toward where you want to go, and its heading stays fixed in the world while you walk or sail. DeadReckoning removes that leftover heading, and gives back the one navigation aid the no-map rules take from dungeon vegvisirs.
What it does
- The build ghost turns with the camera away from a base. Inside any crafting station's build range, building is unchanged: a free-placed piece keeps its heading while you turn, and snapping works as usual. Outside that range, the ghost and its marker turn with the camera, so they no longer point anywhere in particular. The scroll wheel still rotates the piece relative to the camera.
- No ghost at sea. Away from a base, a raised hammer aboard a ship shows no ghost or marker, and clicking places nothing. The mouse wheel still zooms.
- Vegvisirs in dungeons still work. In a no-map world, touching a vegvisir inside a Sunken Crypt or an Infested Mine turns your camera toward the boss, but the dungeon door's exit rotation normally throws that direction away. DeadReckoning remembers the bearing with your character and sweeps the camera toward the boss again as you step out of that dungeon's door. Moving the mouse cancels the sweep, as it does at the stone. The saved bearing is used once, is cleared if you die, and applies only to the dungeon and world where you read the stone.
- Nothing changes on worlds with a map. If your map is enabled, building and vegvisirs behave exactly as in vanilla.
Installation
Client-only. Install it with a mod manager, or copy the DeadReckoning folder into
BepInEx/plugins/. The server and other players do not need it, and it sends nothing
to the server. It requires BepInExPack for Valheim.
To remove it, delete the plugin folder. A saved vegvisir bearing left in a character file is ignored without the mod.
If you tested an earlier hand-copied build, delete its BepInEx/plugins/DeadReckoning
folder first. BepInEx loads the higher version of a duplicated plugin, so an old copy
labelled 1.0.0 would replace this release.
Gizmo
Gizmo is supported but not required. With Gizmo installed, its rotation keys keep working everywhere; its rings are hidden away from a base, because they show world axes.
Settings
BepInEx/config/com.omgbrews.deadreckoning.cfg is created on first launch. Quit the
game, edit the file (for example in your mod manager's config editor), then restart.
| Section | Setting | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost | BasePadding |
0 |
Metres added to every crafting station's build range when deciding whether you are at a base (0–100). |
| Ghost | HideOnShip |
true |
Hide the ghost and marker aboard a ship away from a base. |
| Ghost | HideWhenMoving |
false |
Also hide the ghost on foot away from a base while moving faster than MovingThreshold. |
| Ghost | MovingThreshold |
1.5 |
Speed in metres per second for HideWhenMoving (0–20). |
| Vegvisir | ReplayAtDungeonExit |
true |
Remember a dungeon vegvisir's bearing and replay it at the door. When false, nothing is recorded, and a character's saved bearing is deleted when it loads. |
Out-of-range numbers are clamped and logged. The camera sweep always takes 3.5
seconds; an old SweepSeconds entry from a test build is ignored and can be deleted.
Known limitations
- Crossing the edge of a station's build range with the hammer raised makes the ghost jump between its world heading and its camera-relative heading.
- You can still leapfrog workbenches, aligning each new one from inside the last one's range. The sun, moon, stars, wind and Yggdrasil remain world-aligned; they are the intended references.
- A ship's trigger volume is larger than its deck, so building on a pier beside a moored ship is blocked while you stand inside that volume.
- Ships and carts built away from a base face wherever you are looking.
- A vegvisir on the surface behaves as in vanilla; only dungeon stones are replayed.
Compatibility
Version 0.1.0 is the first public release and is in initial development, so settings may still change between 0.x versions. Built against Valheim 1.0.15 with BepInExPack 5.4.2350. Played on Windows with Gizmo 1.16.0, and also checked without Gizmo. macOS and Linux clients and other building mods have not been tested.
Reporting problems
This mod is maintained by the OMGBrews group, and there is no public issue tracker
yet. When reporting a problem, include the DeadReckoning version, whether Gizmo is
installed, whether the world has a map, what you did and saw, and your
BepInEx/LogOutput.log from that session. Log lines beginning [DeadReckoning] show
the detected map mode and every recorded, replayed or cleared vegvisir bearing.
