TrailLedger
Automatically records nearby resources and locations as you explore, with persistent discoveries, map filters, and resource grouping. Client-side for Valheim.TrailLedger
Keep a record of what you find. TrailLedger automatically remembers nearby resources and useful locations as you explore Valheim, then displays them in a filterable map layer.
What It Does
- Records supported, loaded resources and locations near your character.
- Requires your own explored map area; it does not intentionally reveal unexplored terrain or change map fog.
- Stores discoveries independently from visibility: hiding markers never deletes their records.
- Lets you filter categories and individual resource types.
- Groups nearby resources into cleaner markers with counts.
- Remembers discoveries between sessions in a separate per-world database.
- Works client-side.
Features
Discovery uses object lifecycle events with frequent eligibility checks and a slower recovery scan. By default, an active object must be within 20 metres and in personally explored terrain. Shared cartography alone is not enough.
The full-map panel offers category tabs, individual checkboxes, saved discovery counts, Show All, Hide All, and Only-category presets. Markers appear on both maps. Grouping changes only the display: every stored record keeps its position. Foraging, seeds and ores are grouped by default; dungeons and other major locations remain separate.
Resources prefer inventory sprites borrowed from the running game. Original TrailLedger category symbols provide fallbacks and represent dungeons, spawners and Leviathans. No game graphics are distributed.
Client-Side Behaviour
No server installation is required, and other players do not need TrailLedger. It does not synchronize your discoveries to other players. TrailLedger maintains its own files and does not directly edit world saves. Its normal markers are temporary map visuals rebuilt from that database.
Marker maintenance operates only on TrailLedger's own rendered markers and discovery files. It does not scan, classify or remove other mods' pins or manual map pins.
Installation
Thunderstore / r2modman
Install TrailLedger and its required dependencies using a supported Thunderstore mod manager, then launch the modded game from that manager.
Manual
- Install BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350.
- Install official Jötunn 2.30.0, following its installation instructions. Jötunn is required.
- Close Valheim. Copy
plugins/TrailLedger.dllfrom this package intoValheim\BepInEx\plugins\TrailLedger\. - Keep the package's LICENSE and THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md with your local copy. Start Valheim normally through your BepInEx setup.
Remove any duplicate TrailLedger DLL from older manual installations. Dependencies are installed separately and are not bundled here.
Usage
Open the normal Valheim map (default M) and click TrailLedger · Discoveries to expand the panel. Select a category and use its master checkbox or individual resource checkboxes. Show All, Hide All and Only presets affect visibility, not discovery or stored data.
A marker such as TL · Raspberries ×5 represents five remembered nearby bushes of that type. It is not a current inventory or yield count. Group centres are averages of member positions. Toggle Tools → Group Nearby Resources to show individual records instead.
Tools → Rebuild TL Markers refreshes TrailLedger's markers, icons, filters and groups from stored discoveries. It flushes pending discoveries first and does not erase discoveries or remove unrelated pins. A confirmation screen explains the operation.
Tools → Advanced… → Clear TrailLedger Discoveries for This World… is destructive. After confirmation, it backs up the current world's TrailLedger database and clears that world's stored discoveries. Other worlds, filters and unrelated pins are preserved. Discovery pauses until Tools → Resume Discovery or the next world/session. Back up your TrailLedger data before using this option.
The diagnostic console command trailledger stats reports discovery and marker metrics.
Configuration
BepInEx creates BepInEx/config/au.astra.trailledger.cfg. Edit it with the game closed. A mod manager stores it in the active profile.
| Setting | Default | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery.Enabled | true | Record new discoveries regardless of visibility filters. |
| Discovery.Radius | 20 | Encounter distance in metres, limited to 5–50. |
| Discovery.EligibilitySeconds | 0.15 | Recheck registered objects after movement/exploration. |
| Discovery.FallbackSeconds | 30 | Recover missed object lifecycle events. |
| Map.UIEnabled | true | Show the full-map controls. |
| Map.MaxRenderedPins | 1500 | Limit displayed markers; excess discoveries remain stored. |
| Grouping.GroupNearbyResources | true | Enable display grouping. |
| Logging.Verbose | false | Log diagnostic metrics. |
Grouping category settings control enablement and neighbour radius (foraging 12 m, seeds 8 m, ores 5 m by default). Per-resource Mode and Radius overrides are available; radius 0 inherits the category. Global grouping OFF takes precedence. Connected chains can span farther than the neighbour radius.
Data Storage
Discoveries live in BepInEx/config/TrailLedger/world-<UID>.json. Visibility preferences are in filters.json; database backups are under the same TrailLedger folder. Data is per world, shared by characters using that installation/profile, rather than per character.
Back up the entire BepInEx/config/TrailLedger/ folder if you want to preserve your discoveries. Dirty data is normally saved every 15 seconds and flushed on normal exit. A crash or forced shutdown can lose the newest unsaved discoveries. Discovery files contain locations and world identifiers; review them before sharing publicly.
Supported Discoveries
| Category | Currently tracked |
|---|---|
| Ores | Copper, Tin, Silver, Flametal |
| Foraging | Raspberries, Blueberries, Cloudberries, Mushrooms, Yellow mushrooms, Thistle, Jotun puffs, Magecaps |
| Seeds | Carrot seeds, Turnip seeds |
| Dungeons | Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts, Frost Caves, Infested Mines |
| Other | Leviathans, Surtling spawners, Greydwarf nests |
Only registered prefab variants are recognized. Flametal includes the supported lava-Leviathan and meteorite variants. This is not a catalogue of every resource in Valheim.
Known Limitations
- No automatic depletion/cleared-state tracking: remembered locations can outlive their resources, spawners or Leviathans.
- No line-of-sight test. Loaded objects below ground can qualify by distance and explored map pixel.
- Discovery depends on objects being loaded and personally explored. A missed lifecycle event may wait for the fallback scan.
- The database is per world, not per character. Previously stored records are displayed without a fresh per-character exploration test.
- The nearest-marker cap can hide distant records without deleting them.
- Onion chest-loot detection and additional resource families are not implemented.
- Controls are on the full map only. Controller navigation and localization are not implemented.
- Group centres are approximate and can sit between actual resources.
Compatibility
Built against Valheim 1.0.12, BepInEx 5.4.23.5 (Thunderstore pack 5.4.2350), and Jötunn 2.30.0. Jötunn is a hard dependency for the UI and diagnostic console command. The final build still needs an in-game smoke test; older Valheim versions and broad mod combinations have not been verified.
Other automatic resource-pin mods may produce duplicate or overlapping markers. Map UI mods may overlap TrailLedger's panel. Verify appearance and controls in your chosen profile.
Reporting Problems
Use the support/contact channel provided by this package's publisher. Include your Valheim version, TrailLedger version, installed mod list, BepInEx/LogOutput.log, and clear reproduction steps. Review logs for personal details before posting. Avoid posting world/player saves or the discovery database unless specifically needed and appropriately redacted.
