The Chest of Forgotten Souls

The Chest of Forgotten Souls is no ordinary container. It is a spectral vault, gifted by Odin himself to necromancers who have delved too deeply into the arts of death and shadow. Unlike mortal chests crafted from wood or iron, this vessel exists in the liminal space between realms. It drifts weightlessly, its form only half-anchored in the material world, flickering with pale light and a constant whisper of forgotten voices.

An example of The Chest of Forgotten Souls.

Purpose

Bound to the necromancer by the Ring of Forgotten Souls, the chest cannot be unequipped or abandoned. Once claimed, it becomes a permanent extension of its master’s essence.

Unlike worldly storage, its capacity is not measured in slots or burdened by weight. Instead, it is tethered to the necromancer’s power and the strength of the bindings laid upon it. The Chest can only contain Darkbound necromancer items — talismans, cores, crystals, rings, and other relics tied to the shadowed arts. This restriction ensures that the necromancer’s everyday inventory is left free for survival essentials like wood, stone, food, and ores.

Mechanics

  • Items placed within are swallowed by spectral mists and can be withdrawn with a thought, as though the necromancer were reaching into memory rather than space.
  • The chest is infinite in capacity, though only for Darkbound-specific items.
  • It cannot be dropped, destroyed, or traded — it is permanently bound to the necromancer who wears the Ring of Forgotten Souls.
  • Whispering voices echo whenever it is opened or closed, hinting at the souls that guard its endless vault.

Controls

Button Description
Get All Transfers all non-equipped necromancer items from the necromancer's regular inventory into the Chest of Forgotten Souls. If there are not enough free slots available, only some items will be moved. This is the only way to move items into the chest.
Return All Returns all — or as many as possible — necromancer items back to the regular inventory. The Ring of Forgotten Souls (a gift from Odin) is always kept equipped and never removed.
Information Opens an in-game help panel explaining the purpose and use of the Chest of Forgotten Souls, with additional lore. This is for necromancers who may not read the wiki but find themselves knee-deep in swamps, beset by draugr and leeches, wondering how this mysterious container works.
Ctrl + Left Mouse Click (on an item) Moves a single item from the chest back into the regular inventory. (Note: This only works chest → inventory. From inventory → chest, the usual Valheim behavior applies — items will move into regular chests.)
Right Mouse Click (on an item) Moves a single item from the chest to the regular inventory and immediately equips it. Useful for quickly swapping or equipping talismans mid-battle.

Lore

Legends say the chest’s contents are guarded by the spirits of those whose souls were devoured to forge it. Each artifact stored within joins an unseen collection of forgotten relics drifting between realms. Yet this gift is not without consequence. The whispers of the forgotten grow louder with every use, and some claim that those who peer too long into the chest’s depths risk losing fragments of their own soul to the void it hungers to fill.

For the necromancer, however, such risks are but a small price. In a world where survival depends on carrying reagents, trophies, and tools across endless ruins, the Chest of Forgotten Souls is nothing less than salvation — a treasure beyond measure, carried not on the back, but in the shadow of eternity itself.
