RustyHeathensMistControl
Control Mistlands mist in-game with F8. Toggle mist visibility, adjust wisplight and wisp torch clearing ranges, and sync admin-controlled settings from the server.Rusty Heathens Mist Control
Control Mistlands visibility while you play. Open the in-game panel, hide or restore the mist, and choose how far your wisplight and wisp torches clear it.
Built for the Rusty Heathens community. Works in single-player and on modded multiplayer servers.
Features
- In-game controls: press F8 for the settings panel.
- Quick mist toggle: Left Shift + F8 hides or restores Mistlands mist.
- Separate clearing ranges: adjust equipped wisplights and placed wisp torches independently, from 5 to 60 meters.
- Server-controlled settings: server admins apply changes for everyone using the mod; regular players have a read-only panel.
- Saved settings: changes made through Apply are saved on the host/server and synced to connecting players.
- Reversible: switch off custom settings to restore original ranges and normal mist rendering. No world mist objects are deleted.
Installation
Install BepInExPack Valheim and RustyHeathensMistControl using your mod manager, then start the game modded.
For multiplayer, install the same mod version on the server and every player who should receive the mist changes. Restart the server once after installation. Settings can then be changed in-game without restarting.
For manual installation, place RustyHeathensMistControl.dll in:
BepInEx/plugins/RustyHeathensMistControl/
If you installed the earlier manual test build, remove that manually installed DLL before installing the mod-manager package. Keep just one copy of Mist Control. Your existing Mist Control config can stay.
No Jotunn, external ServerSync, or other Rusty Heathens mod is required.
Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| F8 | Open or close the panel. |
| Left Shift + F8 | Quickly hide or restore mist; requires admin permission in multiplayer. |
| Enable custom mist settings | Master switch. Switch off and Apply to restore original behavior. |
| Hide all Mistlands mist | Choose whether Mistlands particle mist is visible. |
| Wisplight clearing radius | Adjust the equipped wisp's clearing radius. |
| Wisp torch clearing radius | Adjust placed wisp torches separately. |
| Apply | Save and apply your changes. |
| Reset to 25m / 30m | Load the mod's default values into the panel; click Apply to save them. |
| Escape / Close | Close the panel without applying unsaved changes. |
Default settings
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Custom settings | Enabled |
| Mist | Visible |
| Wisplight radius | 25 meters |
| Wisp torch radius | 30 meters |
| Adjustable range | 5–60 meters |
The sliders adjust mist clearance, not illumination brightness. When all mist is hidden, radius differences will not be visible. Restored mist may take a few seconds to fill back in as the game creates new particles.
Server admins and configuration
Single-player and listen-server hosts can edit settings. Dedicated-server changes require a player recognized by Valheim's adminlist.txt. The server checks the sender's connected account before accepting a change.
Admin lists maintained only by other mods do not automatically grant access here. Add your admins to Valheim's real admin list as needed.
Config file:
BepInEx/config/com.rustyheathens.mistcontrol.cfg
The host/server's settings are authoritative. Settings received from a server do not overwrite the client's local configuration. A multiplayer client that cannot sync with the server falls back to original behavior and cannot apply local overrides. Players without this mod retain their own game behavior; this mod does not enforce installation or kick players.
To change local keyboard shortcuts, close the game, edit the config's [Controls] section, and restart:
[Controls]
PanelShortcut = F8
ToggleShortcut = F8 + LeftShift
Rusty Heathens ModGuard
If your server uses ModGuard, add this exact plugin ID to its AllowedForPlayers list:
com.rustyheathens.mistcontrol
This allows regular players to load the mod. Editing its server settings still requires admin permission. Restart after changing ModGuard's server policy.
Compatibility and behavior
- Only Mistlands particle mist is hidden. Ordinary weather fog, smoke, and rain remain.
- Mistwalker and dvergr lantern ranges are not changed.
- Avoid using another mod that changes the same mist or wisp ranges at the same time.
- Original field values are captured when first encountered. With another range mod installed, those values may already contain its adjustments.
- Hiding mist is visual: mist volumes remain in the world and enemy concealment checks are not deliberately disabled. Enlarging native clearing fields can affect game checks using those fields.
- Higher radii may cost more performance, especially around many torches.
- The panel uses keyboard and mouse controls; no separate controller binding is included.
Troubleshooting
F8 does not open the panel: make sure the mod is installed in the active profile, launch the game modded, spawn into a world, and close chat, inventory, map, shop, and console screens. Check for a shortcut conflict.
Panel is read-only: check the server's adminlist.txt. Being an admin in another mod alone is not sufficient.
Panel is waiting for the server: install the same version on the server, restart it, and reconnect.
A change was refused after another admin edited settings: review the refreshed values and Apply again.
For a bug report, include your game version, mod version, whether the issue occurred on the server or client, and the relevant BepInEx/LogOutput.log excerpt. Include a screenshot for a panel issue.
