Runegate

Choose where your portals lead through a searchable Valheim-style menu. Keep personal routes, save favourites, or share a portal destination so friends can follow you through.

Requirements and installation

Requires BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or later.

Install the latest Runegate on the server and each player's client. Shared destinations require version 0.4.0 or newer on both sides; using the same latest version is recommended. For single-player, install on your PC only.

Use Thunderstore Mod Manager, or copy the included plugins/Runegate folder into Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/. Close the game or stop the server before replacing files. Replace your existing Runegate DLL; do not install duplicate copies.

Using portals

Interact with a portal to open Runegate.

Save name: rename the current portal, up to 20 characters.
Destination: open the list and search by name. Entries show distance from the current portal.
Select destination: set the route, then walk through the portal.
Ping on map: share the selected location with other players. Requires maps to be enabled.
Use vanilla pairing: clear your personal route and return to normal tag pairing. Turn off sharing first if the portal has a shared route.

The destination list refreshes automatically. Normal teleport restrictions still apply.

Favourites

Click + beside a destination to favourite it. It changes to * and moves into the favourites section at the top of the list. Favourites are sorted alphabetically, followed by the remaining portals.

Click * to remove a favourite. Search still filters the list normally.

Favourites are personal, saved separately for each character and world, and remain after reconnecting or restarting. They are saved even when destination memory is set to session-only. Favouriting a portal does not select it or change its shared route.

Share a destination with friends

Choose a destination, then tick Share destination with friends. The server confirms and saves the change.

Everyone using that portal with Runegate uses its shared destination.
While sharing is active, Select destination changes the shared route for everyone.
Untick the checkbox to return to each player's personal routing. Existing personal selections are retained.
Shared routes survive server restarts and are separate for each world.
Changes require you to be near the portal and pass the server's ward-permission checks.

The hover text adds (Shared) only when sharing is active:

Sfantul → destination name (Shared)

Controls

Up/Down arrows or controller D-pad: browse destinations.
Enter or controller A: confirm the selected destination.
Esc or controller B: close the portal menu.

Destination shortcuts do not activate while typing in a text field. These are selection shortcuts, not full controller navigation for every control; some actions require a mouse. Controller mappings can vary by device.

Settings

Press Esc, then select Runegate settings.

UI size: choose 70–150%. Release the slider to apply and save. The menu is capped to fit your screen.
Reset size: restore the default size.
Portal memory: choose This session only or After restarts for your personal destination choices.

Session mode ignores previously saved personal routes and does not save new choices. Switching to After restarts saves your current choices. This setting does not disable persistent favourites or server-managed shared routes.

Saved data and backups

Client settings are in BepInEx/config/sfantul.portals.cfg. Personal routes and favourites are in BepInEx/config/Runegate/, separated by character and world.

Shared routes are stored on the server in BepInEx/config/Runegate/World-<world ID>.shared. Include that directory in server backups.
