Pumpkin

Early beta 0.2.1 by SmeagsMods. Grow pumpkins, roast seeds, cook two meals and light your homestead with a carved pumpkin lantern. Uses original crop, food and lantern art.

Local native gameplay tests passed. Dedicated/headless and remote multiplayer have not been validated. Start with a separate test profile and backed-up saves. This beta is not whole-server compatibility certification.

Grow pumpkins

Greydwarf Brutes have a configurable 10% base chance to drop one pumpkin seed before native level/drop scaling. Use a Cultivator on cultivated ground:

  1. Plant one pumpkin seed. The vine flowers, develops green fruit at the native growth midpoint, then becomes a ripe orange pumpkin.
  2. Harvest one pumpkin as the default base yield.
  3. Replant one pumpkin as the separate yellow-mottled seed crop to harvest three seeds.

Default growth is 4,000-5,000 seconds, with a 0.7 m grow radius. Native farming bonuses and world drop multipliers still apply. Plant Everything can override growth, spacing, scale and restrictions.

Cook

Each recipe makes one base serving at a level-one Cauldron. Native crafting bonuses apply. Mash and stew stack to 10; roasted seeds stack to 20 and weigh 0.2 each. Values below are editable defaults.

Food Ingredients Health Stamina Duration Regeneration
Roasted pumpkin seeds 3 raw pumpkin seeds 10 30 15 minutes 1 HP/tick
Honeyed pumpkin mash 1 pumpkin + 2 honey 14 42 20 minutes 2 HP/tick
Pumpkin & venison stew 1 pumpkin + 1 raw deer meat + 1 mushroom 40 14 20 minutes 2 HP/tick

Roasting consumes the planting seeds. The roasted food is a separate item and cannot be planted. Discover it by learning raw pumpkin seeds and the level-one Cauldron. No special buff is added.

Carve and light

Craft one carved pumpkin from one pumpkin at a level-one Workbench. With a Hammer near a workbench, place the Pumpkin lantern, consuming that carved item.

Every placement starts empty and unlit. Add resin through normal interaction: default capacity is six resin, with 20,000 seconds of burn time per resin. Native environmental checks still apply. Dismantling returns one carved pumpkin and discards unused fuel. Replacing the recovered item starts empty again.

The lantern has one fixed original face, real openings, a hollow shell and a candle. This version does not include a freehand carving editor or face selection.

Installation and updates

Tested with Valheim 1.0.21, BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351 and Jotunn 2.30.2. The manifest declares those tested dependency versions. Other versions need their own checks.

  • Mod manager: install the dependencies, then import the finished ZIP using your manager's local-mod import option. Use a separate test profile. Local import may require dependencies to be installed beforehand.
  • Manual: with the game stopped and dependencies installed, copy the package's BepInEx/plugins/SmeagsPumpkin/SmeagsPumpkin.dll into the corresponding test-profile folder.
  • Upgrading from 0.2.0 or the private 0.1.0 build: replace its single DLL; do not load both versions. Existing crop, food and lantern prefab names and config keys are unchanged. New roasted-seed settings are added automatically.

All peers and a server must use matching Pumpkin versions and Jotunn. The mod declares an everyone-must-have-mod requirement; this declaration does not establish multiplayer correctness. Do not treat local passes as dedicated-server readiness.

Configuration is generated at BepInEx/config/smeagsmods.pumpkin.cfg. See CONFIGURATION.md for keys and defaults. Entries use Jotunn's admin-only configuration mechanism; remote synchronization remains untested.

Plant Easily and Plant Everything

Optional versions checked locally: Plant Easily 2.3.1 and Plant Everything 1.21.4. They are not required dependencies.

The Plant Easily bridge adds only this mod's two mature-crop aliases for HarvestedCrop autoreplant, only for inspected version 2.3.1, preserving existing mappings. Enabled autoreplant, missing-seed handling, bulk harvest and 2x2 planting passed locally. Other versions skip the bridge with a log message.

With Plant Everything's crop and modded-crop overrides enabled, its settings take precedence. The tested configuration used 3,500-3,600 seconds, 0.5 m radius and 0.9-1.1 scale.

Known limitation: Plant Easily's ghost grid logged index exceptions during the test harness's tool unequip/re-equip transitions. The same sequence reproduced them with vanilla carrots, with correct placement and costs. This was not isolated to pumpkin prefabs, but ordinary-play confirmation is still needed. No third-party code was patched to suppress it. See TESTING.md for scope and remaining gates.

Removing the mod

Back up characters and worlds first. Keep the mod installed while cleaning up: harvest or destroy pumpkin crops, dismantle lanterns, remove all pumpkin seeds, fruit, foods and carved items from characters, containers and ground drops, and let active pumpkin-food effects expire. Then save, quit and remove the DLL. Dismantling a lantern returns a carved item that also needs removal.

Loading and saving without the mod while custom objects remain can lose those objects or leave unresolved references. Restore a backup if you removed the mod prematurely.
