SnakeWood

Build a log with the hammer and ride it like a hover bike. It floats over ground and water, leans into turns, hops, and each wood type handles differently.

Install on every player's game and on the server to build and ride logs. Players without the mod still see something: each log is saved as a vanilla half log (what a felled tree splits into) from that wood's own tree where there is one (Yggdrasil for Yggdrasil, Ashlands for Ashwood, and so on), resized to the hover log's size, so to them it's a log floating along with the rider (they can't ride or chop it). If the mod is ever removed, saved logs become ordinary tree logs. Fish logs show as their vanilla fish instead, at normal fish size (Fish Show As Fish). Vanilla Disguise turns this off.

The logs

All are under the hammer's Misc tab. Each one is that wood's raw log, floating on a coloured glow, with a little saddle made from the wood's build piece.

Each log has to be built at a better, more upgraded crafting station the further into the game its materials come from, so the later logs come with the later station upgrades:

Station Logs
Workbench level 2 Hover Log, Perch
Forge level 2 Fine Wood, Pike
Forge level 3 Core Wood
Forge level 4 Ancient Bark, Trollfish
Forge level 5 Tuna, Tetra, Pufferfish
Artisan Table Grouper, Coral Cod
Galdr Table level 2 Yggdrasil, Herring, Anglerfish
Black Forge level 2 Ashwood, Salmon, Magmafish
Black Forge level 3 Timberwood

Each log's Crafting Station (a drop-down) and Crafting Station Level can be changed. Turn on Require Boss Kills to also hide each log until its biome's boss is dead (Required Boss). The recipes call for boss summoning items too. Recipes are config entries (Recipe = Wood:50,Resin:20,TrophyDeer:4,DeerHide:10), so a server admin can change them.

Log Cost How it rides
Hover Log 50 Wood, 20 Resin, 4 Deer Trophies, 10 Deer Hides Balanced and forgiving.
Fine Hover Log 50 Fine Wood, 30 Resin, 5 Ancient Seeds, 3 Troll Hides Light, quick and twitchy: a scout. Fast enough to run down a hare, but carries little.
Core Wood Battering Log 60 Core Wood, 30 Resin, 5 Ancient Seeds, 5 Troll Hides Heavy and slow, but nothing knocks you off it and it hauls the heaviest loads. A battering ram: ploughs on through what it hits, fells trees, and smashes rock and copper/tin deposits (about as well as a pickaxe between antler and bronze, counting the back-up-and-charge time).
Ancient Bark Hover Log 60 Ancient Bark, 30 Resin, 6 Withered Bones, 10 Guck Floats high over swamp roots (and leeches), handles water best, carries a lot, and trails a poison cloud that sickens creatures caught in it. Its ram poisons too.
Yggdrasil Hover Log 50 Yggdrasil Wood, 30 Resin, 4 Dvergr Key Fragments, 10 Sap The Mistlands scout: quiet, climbs steepest, floats and hops highest, hops twice more in mid-air, glides down from cliffs, and trails sparks of light. Fast enough to catch a hare.
Ashwood Hover Log 60 Ashwood, 30 Resin, 3 Bell Fragments The fastest, just. Trails embers, and its ram sets things on fire.
Timberwood Hover Log 60 Timberwood, 30 Resin, 3 Frostcores, 10 Ice The Deep North log: as fast as Ashwood, climbs steep snow and ice, floats high, glides, one mid-air hop, trails frost, and its ram chills and slows.

Hover Sled

A floating sled pulled by real animals: 30 Fine Wood, 20 Resin, 10 Deer Hide and 30 Bronze Nails at a level 2 Forge.

  • Hitching (H while looking at the sled, nobody on it): brings the nearest tamed wolf within 6 m into harness, or a hare dragged right up to the sled (within 3 m: harpoon it and pull it in). Two animals per sled, any mix. U unhitches the last one and lets it go, with its stars, health and name intact.
  • The team is the engine. Each animal adds speed (wolves 8.5 m/s, hares 10.5) and pulling strength (wolves 180, hares 60); every star adds 8% speed and 35% strength. Wolves haul, hares run. One animal alone manages 80% of the pace. Strength is the load it pulls before slowing: your carry weight plus the chest's contents, on the same soft curve as the logs.
  • Tough animals. Crashes knock the team instead of wearing the sled. An animal knocked to 0 is exhausted and stops pulling; it never dies in harness. Shift+E with food feeds them (wolves eat what tamed wolves eat; hares eat carrots, turnips and berries), each item healing a third of their health. They also recover slowly while the sled stands still.
  • Cart-sized chest at the back, open to anyone (the driver too, from the seat). Its weight counts as load.
  • Passenger seat: while someone drives, E sits you in the passenger seat.
  • Restful: riding costs stamina only while moving; standing still it recovers.
  • Taking the sled down spills its cargo and releases its team.

Fish logs

Every kind of fish can be ridden too, but only a level 5 fish will do (the rarest catch; Fish Quality Required). They're hard to get, so they ride well: light on stamina, mostly fast on water, and each has a trick. Repair them with raw fish.

Log Cost (plus 1 level-5 fish, 10 Resin) How it rides
Hover Perch 2 Deer Trophies The easy one: steady, cheap on stamina, quick on rivers and sea.
Hover Pike 5 Serpent Scales Built for the open sea, 2.2x its land speed over deep water.
Hover Tuna 5 Serpent Scales The fastest thing at sea (2.7x) and tireless, but sluggish on land.
Hover Tetra 5 Freeze Glands Mountain goat of a fish: climbs 45° slopes, hops with an extra mid-air hop, trails frost.
Hover Trollfish 3 Withered Bones Tough swamp brute: never throws you, rides high over leeches, hauls 420, rams.
Hover Herring 1 Dvergr Key Fragment Quiet, agile scout for the Mistlands coast.
Hover Grouper 2 Fuling Totems Broad sea hauler (420) that rams and shoves.
Hover Coral Cod 2 Fuling Totems Smooth and steady: the best fish to shoot from.
Hover Anglerfish 1 Dvergr Key Fragment Its lure is a bright lamp for night and mist. Quiet.
Hover Salmon 1 Bell Fragment Leaps: big hops plus a mid-air hop, fast in northern seas.
Hover Magmafish 1 Bell Fragment Trails embers and sets what it rams on fire.
Hover Pufferfish 5 Serpent Scales Poisons what it rams and trails a toxic cloud.

Logs are scouting and utility rides, not a faster way to haul everything: the quickest are only a little faster than a ridden Lox, and only with light packs.

Log Top speed (boost) Climbs Load Capacity Durability Noise
Hover Log 7 (9.1) m/s 30° 210 100 normal
Fine Hover Log 9 (13) m/s 35° 130 60 a little quieter
Core Wood Battering Log 5.5 (7.2) m/s 32° 490 300 loud
Ancient Bark Hover Log 7 (9.5) m/s 30° 350 150 normal
Yggdrasil Hover Log 9 (13) m/s 40° 140 120 quiet
Ashwood Hover Log 9.5 (13.8) m/s 35° 180 150 a little louder
Timberwood Hover Log 9.5 (13.8) m/s 42° 240 200 a little quieter

Updating from 1.2 resets each log's Top Speed and Boost Multiplier to these new defaults once, updating from 1.4 or earlier resets the wood logs' Recipes, and updating from 1.12 or earlier resets every log's Load Capacity (other settings you changed are kept).

Portals

Ride straight into a portal and you stay on: you come out the other side still riding, with the log under you. It doesn't fly, drain stamina or burn fuel during the loading screen. The portal takes you as soon as any part of the log enters it, so you can nose into one that stands against a wall. Anything you carry still follows the game's portal rules.

Tight spots: the log bumps into things at its own size (smaller than it looks), and if it ever ends up wedged inside a wall or rock it lets go of it for a moment and slides free. Holding Crouch sinks it low for squeezing in.

Multiplayer

The rider's game flies the log; everyone else sees it ease towards the latest position the rider's game sent, without guessing ahead (guessing ahead made a laggy rider's turns fling the log off course). If logs still look jumpy, turn on Sync Debug (section 9) for the rider and a watcher, ride around, and compare the two LogOutput.log files: they log how often updates arrive, the longest gap, and how far the log you see is from the latest update.

Passengers

Other players can jump onto a log and ride along standing on it while someone drives, the way you stand on a ship's deck. Hold on through the turns!

Fuel

Every log burns resin. A new log starts empty.

  • Shift+E on a log tops it up from your inventory (up to 20). Using resin on it from the hotbar adds one at a time.
  • R while looking at a log takes the whole resin back out (Take Out Fuel Key). Deconstructing a log gives back its resin too.
  • Riding burns about 1 resin a minute. A parked log burns nothing.
  • An empty log won't lift off. If one runs dry mid-ride it sputters along low and slow, with no boost or hops, until you refuel.
  • Core Wood and later logs, and the fish, can instead take one Surtling core (Shift+E, or use it from the hotbar): it fuels the log for good, and drops back out when you take the log down (Lifetime Fuel Item, and Lifetime Fuel per log).

Controls

Key Does
E on a log Get on.
E again Get off (looking at the log or at nothing).
E on a door, chest, portal or sign Use it without getting off. You reach a little further than on foot (Extra Reach While Riding).
W / S Throttle and reverse.
Mouse Steer. The log turns toward where you look, like the Lox.
A / D Strafe. With Steering = Keys, A and D turn instead.
Shift Boost (costs stamina).
Space Hop (costs stamina). The Yggdrasil log can hop again in mid-air.
Crouch (Ctrl) Hold to sink the log right down and creep along, for squeezing under things and into portals. (Crouch Action = Brake makes it brake hard instead.)
Look up / down Tip the nose. Nose up rides higher at speed to clear rising ground; nose down sits lower and dives faster.
Attack, bow, block Fight from the log (Mounted Combat).

When you attack, draw a bow or block, your rider stands up on the log for the move and sits back down a moment after (Combat Stance = Seated tries staying seated instead; experimental). Dodging gets you off, as on the Lox. Arrows and other projectiles fired from a log spread more: each log has its own flat Aim Penalty (steady Core Wood least, twitchy Fine Wood and Ashwood most), and moving adds more on top.

Hover over a log in the build menu to see its stats: speed, turning, hover, hop, balance cost, crash limit, aim, deep-water speed, climb angle, load capacity, noise, durability and any ram or cloud.

Staying on

  • Balance takes stamina. Riding drains a little stamina while you're moving, and stamina doesn't regenerate meanwhile; sitting still it recovers (Stamina Drain When Still turns the drain on for standing still too). Fine Wood and Ashwood are hardest to hold on to and Core Wood easiest. Run out and you fall off, except from a hover sled or a fish log: those crawl along until a quarter of your stamina is back.
  • Eitr helps. If you have eitr (Mistlands food), riding draws a slow trickle of it (0.5/s) and your balance stamina drain drops to a quarter.
  • Crashes throw you. Slam into a tree, rock or wall hard enough and you're thrown off, carrying some of your speed. The Core Wood log never throws you.
  • Going under water throws you. If a dive takes you below the surface you lose your grip, and the log bobs back up.

Weight, slopes and noise

  • Carry weight works like a cart's: there's no hard limit, the log just flies worse the more you carry (your whole inventory weight, gear included). Every bit of weight trims its top speed, acceleration, turning and hops, and lowers its hover a little. At its Load Capacity it's down to 70%; past that it gets bad fast (50% over capacity leaves it crawling at 10%, barely off the ground), and you get a warning. Core Wood and Ancient Bark carry the most.
  • Slopes. Each log has a Max Climb Angle. Ground steeper than that stops it (hop over it or go round), and the log's nose never tips further than that either, from the ground or from looking up and down.
  • Noise. Riding is loud: creatures hear a log idling from about 8 m and one at full speed from about 35 m (a running player is about 30). The Yggdrasil log is quietest, Core Wood loudest.
  • No ore or metal (off by default). Turn on No Ore Or Metal and logs refuse anything you couldn't take through a portal.

Wear

Logs wear out from crashes (harder hits wear more, even on Core Wood, which never throws you) and from ramming. Just riding doesn't wear them. Hover over a log to see its condition.

  • A log that wears right out is wrecked: you're thrown off, and it drops where it is, dark and lifeless, and stays put. Nobody can ride or push it, and nothing is lost.
  • Shift+E repairs it with its own wood (Wood, Fine Wood, Core Wood, Ancient Bark, Yggdrasil Wood, Ashwood; raw fish for the fish logs), 10 wear per piece. Shift+E repairs first only if you carry the repair item; otherwise it goes on to fuel. A wreck has to be repaired all the way (hover over it to see how much it needs) before it flies again, so bring the materials to it. You can do it over several trips.
  • Crashes and rams that wear a log knock splinters off it and shake it, like a cart taking damage.
  • Any log, wrecked or not, can be taken down with the hammer next to just a workbench, whatever station it was built at.

Water

Over shallow water (rivers, lakes, the shore) logs ride as they do on land. Over deep water the log sinks to skim the surface and slows right down (about a third of its land speed; the Ancient Bark log keeps more). The fish logs are the exception: most are faster at sea than on land. Crossing the ocean on a log is possible, but slow and tiring; boats are still the way to sail. An empty log rests on the water like a real one.

Ramming

Logs with Ram Damage above 0 hit whatever they run into at speed. Damage scales with how fast the log was moving into it; a parked or stopped log doesn't hurt anything that walks into it. By default Core Wood, Ancient Bark and Ashwood ram.

  • Creatures take the hit and get knocked back.
  • Core Wood also chops trees, logs and stumps, and chips rock.
  • Build pieces, other players and tames are left alone (by the ram and the poison cloud) unless you turn on Ram Damages Buildings or Ram Damages Players And Tames.

Config

BepInEx/config/com.snakesquad.snakewood.cfg, or Configuration Manager (F1):

  • Steering: Camera (default) or Keys. Hover sleds always steer with A / D. Fish logs turn toward your look lazily, in wide arcs.
  • Riding Pose (drop-down): Surf (default, stand on it like a surfboard), Straddle (like the Lox), SideSaddle or LieDown.
  • Seat Height: raise or lower the rider on the log.
  • Mounted Combat: on by default. Off makes attacking get you off, like the Lox.
  • Crouch Action: Lower (default, sink and creep) or Brake.
  • Combat Stance: Stand (default) or Seated (experimental).
  • Vanilla Disguise: on by default (see the top of this page).
  • Fish Show As Fish (on): with the disguise on, players without the mod see a fish log as its vanilla fish (normal fish size) instead of a tree log. Risk: if one of them ends up owning a parked fish log they can pick it up, which deletes it. Off goes back to tree logs.
  • Pitch With Look and Max Pitch: nose tilt from looking up or down (fish logs tilt half as far again; sleds not at all).
  • Fish Swim Wiggle: how far a fish log's model sways its tail and bobs (the rider and camera stay steady; 0 = off). Fish keep their own proportions and swim in the water: sitting still you sit in it (and get wet); at speed you skim just over the surface with the fish underneath.
  • Free Look Key (Left Alt): with camera steering, hold to look around without turning. Standing still you can always look around freely.
  • Model: RawWood (just the raw log, you sit on the wood; default), Saddle (experimental: the raw log with a Lox saddle strapped on), Mixed (the raw log with a little plank seat, the old default; switched to RawWood once on update), or BuildPiece (the build piece laid flat, as in 1.0). Needs a restart.
  • Hover Height At Rest (0.4): logs hover at full height only while moving; standing still or parked they sink to this share of it, so enemies can reach you while you sit there. 1 = full height at any speed.
  • Passenger Grip (0.6 s): players standing on a log stay stuck to its deck through bumps, as long as they're over the deck. Jumping or walking off the edge lets go.
  • Extra Reach While Riding (2 m): how much further than on foot you can reach doors, portals, signs and chests while riding.
  • Hover Glow: the coloured light under each log.
  • Trails, Trail Opacity and Trail Density: turn the particle trails off, make them fainter, or thicker.
  • Balance: Boost Stamina Per Second, Hop Stamina, Deep Water Depth, Aim Penalty Per Speed, Eitr Per Second and Stamina Drain With Eitr. Also Require Boss Kills (off), Fish Quality Required (5), No Ore Or Metal (off), the load settings (Performance At Load Capacity 0.7, Overload Falloff 1.2), and Noise At Rest / Noise At Top Speed.
  • Fuel: Fuel Item (Resin), Fuel Capacity, Fuel Per Minute (0 turns fuel off), Take Out Fuel Key (R) and Lifetime Fuel Item (SurtlingCore).
  • Sled (section 6): Hitch Key (H), Unhitch Key (U), Team Animals (Wolf:8.5:180:1:0.6,Hare:10.5:60:1.1:0.4 as Prefab:Speed:Strength:Land:Water, where Land and Water multiply the speed; add other creatures here, and the Configuration Manager suggests names as you type), Food For Untamable Animals, Speed Per Star, Strength Per Star, Team Damage, Feed Heal, Rest Heal Per Minute.
  • Wear: Wear (on), Crash Wear, Ram Wear, and Repair Per Item.
  • Ram Damages Buildings / Players And Tames: both off by default.
  • One section per log: Buildable, Recipe, Crafting Station, Crafting Station Level, Required Boss, Aim Penalty, Riding Stamina Per Second, Top Speed, Boost Multiplier, Acceleration, Turn Speed, Hover Height, Hop Height, Air Hops, Fall Gravity, Crash Speed, Deep Water Speed, Max Climb Angle, Load Capacity, Durability, Repair Item, Noise, Ram Damage, and Poison Cloud Damage for Ancient Bark.

The handling settings are read from the rider's config while riding, so each player rides with their own numbers. Settings aren't synced from the server.

Removing a log

Hammer it like any build piece (with its crafting station nearby) to get the materials and any resin in it back.
