EternalMeteor
Meteors fall near the players and wipe out everything where they land, leaving a meteorite full of ore, sometimes Strange ore for a crossbow, a bow and an armor set. The EternalMeteor stone raises a dome they cannot pierce.EternalMeteor
The sky over Valheim is no longer safe. Every so often a meteor comes down near one of the players, burning across the sky for fifteen seconds before it hits, and everything around the impact is gone: people, creatures, houses, ships and forests. What it leaves behind is a smoking crater with a meteorite in it, packed with ore. If you want your base to survive, raise an EternalMeteor stone: its dome takes the hit for you.
Once Moder is dead, some meteorites also carry Strange ore. Smelt it and forge a crossbow, a bow and a full set of armor from a fallen star.
EternalMeteor needs Epic Loot to work 100 %: the runestones the Strange weapons drop are Epic Loot items. Without Epic Loot nothing breaks and the whole mod works the same; only those runestones do not drop.
Meteors
- A meteor falls every 30 minutes of play, near a random player who is on the surface (never inside a dungeon). It lands between 80 and 500 meters from that player, on dry land, and it can land on bases.
- The fall lasts 15 seconds. First a red glow far away in the sky and a low rumble. Then a burning rock about 4 meters wide crosses the sky, trailing fire and smoke, lighting the ground orange and shaking the camera more and more. A sonic boom comes 3 seconds before the impact.
- Players within 400 meters get a warning on screen, and a pulsing red circle marks the 50 meter wide blast zone on the ground. There is time to run.
- The impact: a blinding flash, a fireball, a shockwave, burning rocks thrown in every direction, smaller blasts across the area and a long roar. Players far away see the flash before the sound arrives.
The impact
Everything within 25 meters of the impact (a circle 50 meters wide), from 15 meters below it to 60 meters above, is destroyed:
- Every living being dies: players, creatures and tamed animals. Bosses are spared unless the server turns that on.
- Every build piece is destroyed, ships, carts, portals and wards included. Chests spill what they hold. Destroyed pieces drop no materials by default, so a flattened base does not turn into a pile of items.
- Trees, logs, rocks, ore deposits, bushes and plants burn away.
- Never touched: graves, EternalMeteor stones, meteorites, boss altars and boss stones, vegvisirs, traders, runestones and dungeon entrances.
A crater 24 meters wide and 4 meters deep is left behind, with bare scorched ground around it. It burns and smokes for a minute, then the fires die out.
Meteors also land where no player is nearby. There the server destroys the same things without any effects, and nothing drops: a chest destroyed in an empty area loses its contents. The crater and the meteorite appear when someone comes close.
The meteorite
In the middle of the crater a meteorite rises, about 4 meters tall, glowing red hot and smoking while the crater burns, then cooling down. Sparks in the colours of its metals rise from it, and hovering over it shows what it holds and how much. It can be mined with any pickaxe and, when it breaks, drops each material in stacks.
Each material has its own 30 % chance of being in a meteorite, so no two are the same, and every meteorite holds at least one. Ores come close to a full stack (30); bars come in fewer, since each one is worth two copper and a tin:
| Material | Amount | Available |
|---|---|---|
| Copper ore | 20 to 30 | always |
| Tin ore | 20 to 30 | always |
| Bronze | 8 to 15 | always |
| Scrap iron | 20 to 30 | after The Elder |
| Silver ore | 15 to 25 | after Bonemass |
| Black metal scrap | 15 to 25 | after Moder |
| Flametal ore | 10 to 20 | after The Queen |
After Moder, 40 % of meteorites carry 10 to 15 Strange ore on top of the rest: one meteor in every 2 or 3 brings it, never a long run without (see Strange gear below). Meteorites that fell before this version and are still unmined get a 40 % chance once, when a player first comes near them: out of ten old meteorites, about four end up with Strange ore.
The world's resource rate multiplies these amounts, as it does with every other drop.
On the map
Every meteor marks where it landed on the map of every player, with a meteor icon named Meteor (Meteoro with the game in Spanish), on the minimap and on the large map. The marker appears at the moment of the impact and stays until the meteorite is mined, then it goes away by itself. Players who join later, or after a server restart, see it too, and meteorites already lying in the world show up as well.
The markers are not saved in the players' maps: they cannot be removed by hand, a cartography table does not copy them, and nothing is left behind if the mod is removed. The server can turn them off with MapPins.
Strange gear
Strange ore comes only from meteorites: once Moder is defeated, one meteor in every 2 or 3 brings 10 to 15 pieces. A smelter turns each ore into a Strange Ingot, and a level 3 forge makes the rest. All of it is black metal split by glowing magma, with lines of blood-red light.
Strange Crossbow
- 180 pierce (+4 per upgrade), up to quality 4. It is built on the Arbalest: same grip, bolts and reload.
- Free shot: every shot has a 60 % chance to spend no bolt and leave the crossbow loaded. At most two free shots come in a row, so one load fires up to three bolts (about two on average).
- Bleeding: 60 % of hits make the target bleed for 10 seconds, losing 1.5 % of its maximum health every second (15 % in total). Bosses lose a flat 1.5 health per second instead. A bleeding target cannot start bleeding again until it stops.
- Hunter's luck: see below.
- Small red lightning bolts crackle over it while it is loaded.
- Recipe: 80 Strange Ingots, 10 Fine wood, 6 Silver, 4 Wolf pelts. Each upgrade: 40, 5, 3 and 2.
Strange Bow
- 60 pierce (+3 per upgrade), up to quality 4. It is built on the Draugr fang, without its poison.
- Free arrow: every shot has a 60 % chance to spend no arrow, at most two in a row.
- The same bleeding and hunter's luck as the crossbow.
- A glowing red string that bends to your drawing hand, and red lightning while you draw. Other players see both.
- Recipe: 80 Strange Ingots, 8 Fine wood, 4 Silver, 2 Wolf pelts. Each upgrade: 40, 4, 2 and 1.
Hunter's luck
A creature killed by the Strange Crossbow or the Strange Bow, or by their bleeding, drops:
- Its head (its trophy) at least half of the time. A creature whose own chance is higher keeps it, and a head the game already dropped is never doubled.
- One Epic Loot runestone, 35 % of the time, always a single one of a single kind: Magic 40 %, Rare 28 %, Epic 17 %, Legendary 9 %, Mythic 4 %, Ancient 2 %. These are the runestones of Epic Loot's enchanting table. Without Epic Loot installed none drops.
It works in multiplayer whoever owns the creature, and for kills by other players' Strange weapons too.
Strange Armor
A helmet, a breastplate and greaves with the build of the silver (wolf) armor and more protection: 25 armor per piece (+2 per upgrade), up to quality 4, weights 3, 15 and 15, and -5 % movement speed on the breastplate and the greaves. The helmet is a masked helm crowned in gold, with raven wings and a meteorite burning in one eye socket; the breastplate carries Odin's knot in gold with a meteorite at its heart and a wolf pelt over the shoulders.
Wearing all three pieces gives the set bonus:
- +10 % armor.
- +15 % stamina regeneration and +15 % health regeneration.
- -15 % stamina spent running and jumping.
- Anti-freezing: the cold of the mountains and of the night never freezes you.
- -15 % frost damage, on top of any other frost resistance.
- Reflection: the next hit you take sends 25 % of its damage back to the attacker. You still take the hit. Then it recharges for 5 minutes.
- Soul touch: when you are hit, there is a 40 % chance that the hit does nothing to you and that the attacker takes 15 % more damage from everything for 5 seconds. Then it recharges for 5 minutes.
Both recharges show among your status effects with the time left, and they keep running if you log out or die.
Recipes at a level 3 forge: helmet 80 Strange Ingots, 3 Silver and 2 Wolf pelts; breastplate 80 Strange Ingots, 5 Silver and 4 Wolf pelts; greaves 80 Strange Ingots, 4 Silver and 3 Wolf pelts. Each upgrade costs 40 Strange Ingots and about half of the rest.
Every number and recipe of the Strange gear is a server setting (sections 7 and 8).
The EternalMeteor stone
A monolith of black stone carved with glowing runes, with a crystal floating and turning above it.
- Built with the hammer next to a workbench: 10 Stone, 5 Fine wood and 4 Copper. It has its own EternalMeteor tab in the hammer menu, and it also shows under Misc and Defense, next to the ward.
- It protects a circle 120 meters wide (60 meters around the stone), at any height. Hover over it to see that circle on the ground.
- A meteor aimed inside the circle bursts against the stone's dome, high in the air, and the dome flashes into view for a few seconds. A burning fragment bounces off and comes down past the edge, where it lands with a normal impact. That blast never harms anything under any dome, and its crater always stays outside.
- A meteor aimed just outside a dome lands a little further out, so its crater never digs into the protected ground.
- Press the use key (E) on the stone to show or hide its dome, so you can see how far it reaches. Every player sees it, anyone can switch it, and it stays as you left it.
- Meteors never damage the stone itself. Monsters can.
- It is not a ward: it gives no build permissions and does not count as a base.
Console command
meteorshow (in the F5 console): a meteor falls on your position, with the whole descent. It works in single player, for the host, and for admins on a dedicated server, where the server checks its admin list. It does not need devcommands, but with devcommands on, the meteor's Strange ore skips the Moder requirement, so the 40 % can be tried in any world.
Installation
With a mod manager (r2modman, Thunderstore Mod Manager), install EternalMeteor; BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn come with it. Install Epic Loot as well for the runestones of the hunter's luck; without it everything else works.
By hand, install BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn, then copy what is inside the zip's plugins folder into BepInEx/plugins/EternalMeteor. Keep the Assets and Translations folders next to EternalMeteor.dll.
In multiplayer the server and every player need EternalMeteor, with exactly the same version. The server decides every meteor and sends its settings to every player on connect.
Each player sees the mod's texts in their own game language: English and Spanish are included, and any other language shows English. The config file and the log are in English.
Configuration
The file is BepInEx/config/com.srcodex.eternalmeteor.cfg; Configuration Manager edits it in game (F1). Sections 1 to 4, 7 and 8 are server-enforced: on a server only an admin can change them. Sections 5 and 6 belong to each player.
| Section | What it controls | Defaults |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - Meteors | Random meteors on or off, how often, how far from the player, the fall time, sea landings, map markers | on, every 30 min, 80 to 500 m, 15 s, dry land only, markers on |
| 2 - Impact | Blast radius and what it destroys, crater size, how long it burns | 25 m radius; kills players, spares bosses; destroys buildings (no material drops) and nature; crater 12 m radius, 4 m deep, burning 60 s |
| 3 - Meteorite | Chance per material, the material list with amounts and boss keys, progression, pickaxe tier, health, Strange ore | 30 %, the table above, progression on, any pickaxe, 300 health, 10 to 15 Strange ore in 40 % of meteorites (every 2 or 3) after Moder |
| 4 - Protection stone | Protected radius, bounce distance, recipe | 60 m, 8 m past the edge (at least the crater radius + 2), Stone 10, Fine wood 5, Copper 4 |
| 5 - Effects | Camera shake, screen flash, volume, burning debris, domes always visible, lightning on the Strange weapons | on, on, 1, 18 rocks, off, on |
| 6 - Debug | Extra log detail | off |
| 7 - Strange weapons | Damage, free shots, bleeding chance and recipe of the crossbow and of the bow; how long and how hard bleeding hurts; the hunter's luck (head and runestone chances, which runestones) | the numbers in Strange gear |
| 8 - Strange armor | Armor per piece, every part of the set bonus, both recharges and the three recipes | the numbers in Strange gear |
The material list in section 3 uses ItemPrefab:min:max:requiredGlobalKey entries separated by ;. Any item of the game, or of another mod, can be added. The recipes in sections 7 and 8 use ItemPrefab:amount:amountPerLevel entries separated by ;, where the second number is what each upgrade costs.
To test, set MinIntervalMinutes and MaxIntervalMinutes to 1, or use meteorshow.
Compatibility
EternalMeteor patches five game methods: game start and the item database (postfixes), the attack trigger (a prefix and a postfix, for the free shots of the Strange weapons), the crossbow's reload queue (a postfix) and a creature's drop list (a postfix, for the hunter's luck, which only adds to it). It also adds its own meteorshow console command.
Epic Loot is optional (see the top of this page). Its own drops and the hunter's luck add up: a kill can bring both.
Ammo-saving enchantments of other mods, such as Epic Loot's ammo conservation, work alongside the free shots: a bolt or arrow already given back is never given back twice.
Wards from other mods do not stop meteors: only the EternalMeteor stone does.
Known limitations
- What a meteor destroys where no player is nearby disappears without effects or loot, chest contents included.
- Valheim's terrain can be lowered 8 meters at most, so very deep craters stop there.
- The dome is drawn with the game's own shield effect from the Ashlands shield generator.
- The Strange Armor plates are rigid, as real plate armor: in extreme poses they can cross at the joints.
- A bolt or arrow that carries its own status effect replaces the bleeding on the hits where that effect triggers.
Changelog
- 1.2.3: Strange gear. After Moder, one meteor in every 2 or 3 carries Strange ore (meteorites already lying in the world get a 40 % chance); it smelts into the Strange Ingot, which a level 3 forge turns into the Strange Crossbow, the Strange Bow and the Strange Armor, each with its own enchantments, plus the hunter's luck of the two weapons (heads and Epic Loot runestones).
- 1.1.2: rebuilt and checked for Valheim 1.0.20; no gameplay changes.
- 1.1.1: meteor sites marked on every player's map until the meteorite is mined; a meteor every 30 minutes (config files still on the old 40 to 90 move to 30 by themselves, values someone changed are kept).
- 1.0.0: first release.
The full notes are in CHANGELOG.md, shown in the Changelog tab on Thunderstore.
