WeaponRename

Shift+right-click a weapon in your inventory to rename it, or reset it to the default localized name.

The custom name is stored on that item instance (not the prefab). Every player with this mod sees the same name on world drops, in chests, and on item stands.

Install

Install with r2modman or another Thunderstore manager. This mod depends on:

Dedicated servers and every client must have matching versions. Vanilla clients will be rejected at join so renamed weapons stay visible to everyone.

How to use

  1. Open your inventory.
  2. Hold Shift (configurable).
  3. Right-click a weapon.
  4. Rename, Reset (back to the default localized name), or Cancel. Escape also closes.

Features

  • Weapons by default: axes, clubs, swords, spears, polearms, knives, fists, shields, bows, crossbows, elemental and blood magic, and ammo (arrows, bolts, missiles, bombs, blob bombs). Pickaxes, tools, armor, and food cannot be renamed unless you turn WeaponsOnly off.
  • Reset restores the real vanilla name, including other languages.
  • Host rules (rename enabled, weapons-only, max length) sync from the server. The Shift key stays per-client.
  • Does not change internal prefab ids. Other mods still see an Iron Sword.
  • Optional: DarwinAwards death feed can show the custom weapon name.

DarwinAwards

WeaponRename does not require DarwinAwards. If both mods are installed, the victim's client replaces {weapon} in PvP death lines with the killing weapon's display name (custom if set). Lines without {weapon} are left unchanged. The Discord webhook gets the same string.

DarwinAwards itself only knows {player} (the victim) and {enemy} (the killer's character name). Paste {weapon} into death by player: on the host/server.

Copy-paste pool: AwardCategories.death-by-player.example.yml in this package (or in the WeaponRename repo under WeaponRename/Package/).

death by player:
  - "{player} was killed by {weapon}."
  - "{player} was slain by {enemy}'s {weapon}."
  - "{player} wanted to hug {enemy} and found {weapon} instead."
  - "{player} wanted to make new friends, but met {weapon}."
  - "{player} was smacked by {enemy}'s {weapon}."
  - "{player} lost an argument with {weapon}."
  - "{player} never saw {weapon} coming."
  - "{player} brought words. {enemy} brought {weapon}."
  - "{player} learned {weapon} works both ways."
  - "{player} lost a staring contest with {weapon}."
  - "{player} heard a click. Then {weapon}."
  - "{player} should not have stood in front of {weapon}."
  - "{player} was on the wrong side of {weapon}."
  - "{player} learned {weapon} has a short fuse."
  - "{player} could not outrun {weapon}."
  - "{player} walked into the long end of {weapon}."
  - "{player} got too close to {enemy}'s {weapon}."
  - "{player} was kept at spear's length by {weapon}."

Edit BepInEx/config/AwardCategories.yml on the host, then restart or wait for DarwinAwards' file watcher. You cannot add new category keys. DarwinAwards picks one of these lines at random for any PvP kill.

Turn replacement off with synced config DarwinAwardsShowWeapon.
