VKTR_VanityOutfit

A vanity outfit system inspired by Terraria. The mod gives the same level of expressive freedom while staying true to Valheim's harsher philosophy.

What it does

Hold Use on a Barber Station to open the Outfit menu. Click any armor piece in your inventory and it becomes the look of that slot. The piece stays in your inventory, so you can store it or throw it in a chest afterwards.

Your armor value, resistances, set bonuses and effects always come from what you actually have equipped. The outfit is only what people see.

Features

  • Client side, server benefits. Only you need the mod to wear an outfit. The server doesn't need it, and friends without the mod still see your outfit in multiplayer.
  • 5 outfit slots: helmet, chest, legs, cape and trinket, each with its own Hide toggle.
  • Hide Megingjord: hides the belt model without touching its effect.
  • Contextual headgear: your helmet disappears while you're sheltered, like you took it off at the door, and comes back when you step outside.
  • 4 presets + 1 Home preset, named by you, shown where the crafting panel usually is.
  • Home outfit: the fifth preset slot is reserved for your Home outfit. Rest in a shelter with a bed you claimed and the outfit equips itself; walk away and your normal outfit comes back. The moment you rest, the mod puts an invisible "home dome" around one of the following: a house map pin near you, or yourself if there are no map pins. If you have the mod LocationIntro installed, the Home outfit uses its method for detecting your home area instead (you still need a claimed bed), no resting needed.
  • Quick swap hotkey (Alt+O by default) to cycle your presets and your real gear, without going back to the Barber Station.
  • Walk of Shame (on by default): after death the outfit is off until you put some armor back on.
  • Outfit preview camera: the camera turns to face your character, full body, while the menu is open.
  • Full controller support: LB/RB jump between the outfit window and each preset.
  • Main menu preview shows your outfit.
  • Localized in all 35 languages supported by the game (I did my best).

Configuration

The config file is created after the first launch: BepInEx/config/vktr.vanityoutfit.cfg

Presets PanelScale 1 Size of the preset panels

Colors ignore the game's time-of-day lighting, so the menu looks the same at noon and at midnight.

Options

Everything below is in the Outfit menu.

  • Outfit slots: click an armor piece in your inventory to set it, click the outfit slot to clear it.
  • Hide: the slot shows nothing on your character, even if you have real armor equipped there.
  • Hide Megingjord and Contextual headgear: in the small panels under the outfit window. Both are saved in presets.
  • Save: copies your current outfit into the preset and asks for a name.
  • Wear: puts the preset on.
  • Delete: press twice to confirm.
  • Home preset: the last one, with the house icon. Save it like any other preset.

Notes

How the outfit reaches other players. The game already tells every player which armor model you're wearing. The mod swaps that model before it's sent. Other players load it like any other armor piece, which is why they don't need the mod. Nothing new is sent over the network, and changes only go out when your outfit changes.

Where your outfit is saved. Outfit and presets live in your character file as a few lines of text. They follow the character, not the world. Nothing is saved in the world, so removing the mod leaves your worlds exactly as vanilla. The leftover lines in the character are ignored by the game.

Home detection. You always need a bed you own within Radius (30 m) of you, so dungeons, crypts or a random shelter on the road never count as home.

  • Without LocationIntro: when you get the Resting status, the mod marks a home area of Radius around you. If you have a house pin within Radius, the area is centered on the pin instead. The Home outfit stays on while you're inside the area. Once you leave it, your normal outfit comes back and the area is gone until you rest again. The area is just a point and a radius kept in memory: nothing is placed in the world.
  • With LocationIntro: the mod uses LocationIntro's home pin areas. Walking into one is enough, no resting needed, as long as your bed is within Radius.

The outfit only switches after you've been in or out for Delay seconds, so walking on the edge of the area won't flicker it. If you change outfit by hand while at home, the mod keeps your choice and won't switch you back when you leave.

Quick swap order. Each press moves to the next saved preset. After the last one you see your real gear, then it starts again from the first preset. The Home preset is skipped. The real gear step doesn't delete anything: the next press puts your outfits back on. If you're wearing an outfit that isn't saved in a preset, the first press replaces it, so save it first if you want to keep it.

Contextual headgear. It follows the game's Shelter status, with a short delay so it doesn't flicker on the doorstep. It hides whatever helmet you're showing, outfit or real. While the Outfit menu is open the helmet stays visible, so you can still pick one. Light-emitting helmets stay on, since hiding them would turn their light off.

Walk of Shame. Dying turns the outfit off until you equip any armor piece. You still see the outfit while the Barber Station menu is open, so you can edit it.

Light-emitting pieces. Pieces with a light in their model (like the Dverger Circlet) can't be used in the outfit. The mod checks every item at startup, including items from other mods, and writes the list in the BepInEx log. If you actually wear one of these pieces, that slot shows the real piece, so its light keeps working.

Limitations

  • Dverger Circlet. Its light is part of the model: it lights up the area and cancels your sneak bonus. Showing it as an outfit would give you a free light and a stealth penalty, and removing the light on your screen would still leave it on for everyone else. Making it work would mean sending extra data to other players, and the mod would stop being client-side. So light-emitting pieces are excluded from outfits.
  • Presets are per character. They're not shared between characters.
  • Each player needs the mod to wear an outfit. Seeing outfits needs nothing.
  • The crafting panel is hidden while the Outfit menu is open, since the presets take its place.

Installation

With r2modman / Thunderstore Mod Manager: click install, done.
