ElementalEffects
Staff magic touches the world: frost freezes water into floating ice and wet creatures into ice blocks, fireballs relight fires and fuel smelters, the Staff of the Wild fertilizes and plants. Vanilla look, no Jötunn.Elemental Effects
Magic that touches the world, not just your enemies.
Valheim's staffs are made for fighting. Elemental Effects lets their magic interact with the world the way you'd expect, using only the game's own ice, frost, fire and growth effects, so everything looks like it shipped with Valheim.
What it does
Frost freezes water
A Staff of Frost shard that lands on open water freezes it into a sheet of real Deep North ice. Each sheet breaks up into floes that bob and tilt on the swell, sink a little under your weight, and crack and melt away after about 20 seconds (up to 40 with a high Elemental Magic skill). Shoot ahead of you to lay a path across a lake or out to sea. Firing at the ice again keeps it frozen for longer.
Wet + frost freezes creatures solid
A creature that is Wet (from swimming, or out in the rain) and gets hit by frost freezes into a block of ice for 3 seconds (up to 6 with a high Elemental Magic skill). It stops in its pose, can't move or attack, and floats if it's in water.
- Blunt weapons and pickaxes shatter the ice for double damage.
- Fire melts it at once.
- After it thaws, the creature can't be frozen again for 6 seconds.
- Bosses and players are immune by default (both can be switched on).
Staff of Embers relights fires
A fireball that hits a torch, sconce, brazier, campfire, hearth, hot tub or stone oven fills it with fuel and relights it if it went out. A smelter or blast furnace gets 2 coal per hit. One fireball fuels everything in its blast. A shot that fuels anything does no damage to your buildings and leaves no fire behind. Creatures caught in it still burn.
Staff of the Wild tends your garden
Fire the Staff of the Wild into your fields when no enemies are near (8 m around the impact):
- Fertilize. Every growing sapling and crop in the blast jumps ahead by 25% of its grow time, once per plant.
- Seed scatter. Seeds from your inventory are planted in a neat patch around the impact, up to 12 per shot. On cultivated soil it plants crops. Anywhere else it plants trees, and never on cultivated soil. It uses the seed you last planted with the cultivator, or else the first seeds in your inventory. Spacing, biome, sunlight and ward rules all match vanilla planting.
- Seed crops. Hold Shift while casting to plant the seed-growing versions of turnip, onion, carrot and kale instead of the food crops.
- A shot that plants or fertilizes anything does no damage to your buildings, and it doesn't spawn the roots vine. The staff never damages saplings or crops. With enemies nearby, the staff fights exactly as it does in vanilla.
Elemental Magic makes it last
Your Elemental Magic skill stretches both freezes: at skill 100 the ice and the frozen creatures last twice as long, scaling evenly from skill 0. The ice uses the skill of whoever made it, and a frozen creature uses the skill of whoever froze it.
Multiplayer
Install it on every player's game. A dedicated server doesn't need it, because it only relays the ice to the players. Players without the mod won't see or stand on the ice.
Configuration
Everything can be switched on or off and tuned in BepInEx/config/com.chase.elementaleffects.cfg, with one section per effect: FrostIce, FloeSim, FrostFreeze, FireFuel and NatureStaff. Settings include freeze length, the Elemental Magic bonus, shatter bonus, coal per hit, seeds per hit and growth boost.
Requirements
- BepInExPack for Valheim
- No Jötunn, so your achievements stay enabled.
Installation
Use a mod manager, or copy the ElementalEffects folder into BepInEx/plugins.
