Modular Ladders

Vertical wall ladders that stack, one for each build set. Build a ladder as tall as you need from 2 m segments, then use it to climb straight to the top.

What it does

  • Five ladders, one per build set: wood, core wood, darkwood, ashwood and dvergr. They're in the hammer menu right after the vanilla Wood ladder, and each one is built at the same station and from about the same materials as two of that set's poles.
  • Stack them. Each piece is a 2 m segment that snaps foot to top, so a ladder can be any height. The rungs are evenly spaced across segments, so a stack reads as one ladder. You can even mix sets in one stack.
  • One press to climb. Standing at the bottom, use any segment to climb to the top of the whole stack. You step off over the top in front of you, onto a wall top or ledge, or back on your own side for a hatch in a floor. At the top, use it to climb down to the lowest place you can stand beside it. Partway up, on a floor in between, look down to climb down and level or up to climb up.
  • It checks the way. If something blocks your climb, or there's no room where you'd land, you get "Something is in the way". If there's nothing to stand on at all, it tells you there's nowhere to step off. Climbing down never counts as a fall.
  • Better wood climbs higher. Wood, darkwood and ashwood stacks stand up to 8 segments (16 m) from solid ground, core wood 9 (18 m) and dvergr 10 (20 m). The usual support colours show how close you are.
  • Made to look vanilla. Each ladder has its own hand-shaped rails and rungs in its set's vanilla textures. The world-position weathering that vanilla pieces have applies to them too, so no two look quite alike. They wear, break and show support like any other piece.

Installation

Install with r2modman or the Thunderstore Mod Manager; BepInExPack Valheim is installed automatically as a dependency. No Jötunn needed.

Manual install: put ModularLadders.dll in Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\ModularLadders\.

Multiplayer: everyone who plays on the world needs the mod, and so does a dedicated server, because the ladders are build pieces the game has to know about.

Removing the mod: ladders you built disappear from the world when the mod is removed. Nothing else is changed.

Known limitations

  • The messages are in English only.
  • Ladders snap to each other and stand upright; leaning or sideways ladders aren't climbable.
  • Not yet tested alongside other mods that change building or structural support.
