Before Valhalla

Before Valhalla is an exploration-focused modpack that includes new world generation, new locations, new items, new enemies, additional traders, 9 new boss fights, and the Deep North.

Everything is pre-configured and can be played solo or with friends, and its easy to install on a dedicated server.

(IMPORTANT: Creating a new world can take 10-20 minutes to complete. Use World Gen Accelerator to speed this up if needed.)

Forsaken Kins

Each biome features an additional boss known as the Forsaken Kins whose powers match that of the Forsaken. Although they are optional bosses, slaying the Forsaken Kins will aid your journey by providing you new weapon and item recipes, unlocking trader items, and upgrading Waypoints.

Additional information on Forsaken Kins

Forsaken Kins are bosses similar to the Forsaken. Unlike the Forsaken, they are optional and choosing not to slay a Forsaken Kin will not prevent you from progressing through the game. However, defeating the Forsaken Kin of a biome will grant you rewards including but not limited to the following:

  • Traders for that biome will sell more kinds of items and sometimes offer special discounts
  • You can teleport the biome's ores using Waypoints
  • Rare weapon and trinket drops
  • Weapon and trinket recipes using the boss' trophy

Many features of this modpack are tied to the Forsaken Kins. It is generally recommended to defeat them.

Below is a list of all the Forsaken Kins:

  • Asmodeus (Meadows)
  • Svalt (Black Forest)
  • Vrykolathas (Swamp)
  • Hrimnir (Mountains)
  • Kraken (Plains)
  • Frigga (Mistlands)
  • Rhydderch Hel (Ashlands)
  • Herald of the Storm (Deep North)

Waypoints

Portals have been disabled in this modpack. Instead, Waypoints are scattered around the map, allowing the player to teleport from one Waypoint to another. Players can teleport ores once the respective biome's Forsaken Kin has been defeated.

Traders and Ports

Additional traders for each biome are included in this modpack. Traders will now buy all kinds of items from the player and sell unique items.

Shipping ports are scattered near the shores and rivers of the world. Players can use shipping ports to move around heavy items and non-teleportable items for a small fee.

Soulslike Death

Your armor and weapons are bound to you even in death, but your loot is not. Items like ores and consumables will drop into a tombstone as usual. However, death is unforgiving — dying again destroys your previous tombstone along with any loot left behind!

World Environment

The world of Valheim has become 50% larger with many new points of interests (POI) and secret locations. It is now affected by changing seasons: different seasons provide unique buffs, rotating trader inventories, special raids, and other environmental changes. Dungeons and caves are larger and deeper.

Deep North

A fully reworked Therzie's Deep North is included in this modpack. This includes two boss fights, new enemies, additional locations, forests and vegetation, one trader, and shipping ports.

(For those who have played through Therzie's Deep North in the past, Muspelheim creatures and bosses are completely disabled. Many of the weapons and armor have reworked recipes to account for this.)

Installing / Updating

Installing via r2modman (recommended):

  1. Download and install r2modmanPlus on your computer.
  2. Open r2modman and in the list of games, select Valheim and your platform.
  3. Create a new profile by clicking on "Create new" and give it a name. Select your newly created profile.
  4. Go to the Before Valhalla Thunderstore page and click "Install with Mod Manager". (Alternatively, you can also find Before Valhalla by searching for it in r2modman client using the "Mods --> Online" tab).
  5. Click "Start modded" on the top left of r2modman to start the game.

⚠️ CRITICAL: Read Before Updating

The cleanest way to update the modpack is to create a new r2modman profile.

Always check the CHANGELOG before installing an update. Some changes can corrupt or "brick" your existing world.

Check the Version Numbers:

  • Safe to Update: If the MAJOR version matches (e.g., v2.1.0 to v2.2.0).

  • NOT Safe: If the MAJOR version is different (e.g., v2.0.0 to v3.0.0).

IMPORTANT: If the first number of the version changes, the update is incompatible. You MUST start a new world or continue playing on your current version without updating.

Installing on a Dedicated Server (advanced users)

There are many ways to create a Dedicated Server which is not covered in this documentation. The instructions only show how to install Before Valhalla on a Dedicated Server.

  1. Create a new r2modman profile (steps 1-5 above). Run the game once and close it.
  2. In the r2modman client, click on the "Settings" tab on the left side. Then click "Browse profile folder". This will open your computer's file manager.
  3. Navigate to the folder BepInEx. Inside the folder, you will see config, patchers, and plugins.
  4. Copy config, patchers, and plugins to your dedicated server's BepInEx folder.

To update Before Valhalla on your dedicated server, repeat the steps again.

It is recommended to use additional network mods such as ValheimEnforcer and NetworkTweaks to prevent cheating and reduce lag.
