Mycordytum
Updated 9 months agoMycordytum was once a normal moon with a high amounts of fungi residing on its surface. The moon was abundant in Spore Lizards, making it an ideal location to set up Puffer Ranches and medical research centers. The domesticated Spore Lizards were raised for the express purpose of harvesting as many tails as possible. Meanwhile, biologists, mycologists, and medical researchers did extensive research and testing on both Spore Lizards and the intriguing local fungi. Finding potential use in both, experiments were performed in an attempt to grow the mushrooms and enhance their medical properties.
Unfortunately, things were taken too far. Contact was lost for a long period when the lone satellite used for communication went offline. When the moon was next surveyed to check in on the residents, an unfamiliar, bizarre sight was found. Megafunga species had grown to massive sizes and now covered 88% of the moon's surface. The fungi had formed deep, interconnected hyphae in the mycelium now covering the moon. Seemingly, the fungi were now one large colony, capable of communication and specialized tasks. The Colony was ruthless. Deceptively capable, The Colony had used the diverse and advanced capabilities of the unique species it consisted of in order to engineer the moon's ecology into something it could rule over as the dominant species.
Research quickly shifted over to studying the mutated fungi that made up The Colony. Each species played a crucial role with biological functions that were baffling to researchers. The more that was uncovered, the more wary of The Colony people grew. If a single spore were able to travel to another celestial body, the effects would be catastrophic. Some of the spores on the colony were extremely durable, and seemed to be improving at an impossible rate - much faster than evolutionary capabilities should allow. But surely no spore could survive the vacuum of space, right?
Slowly, researchers would go missing. They were not wanted on the moon. The Colony saw them as threats. Some disappeared, the others left voluntarily. Now all that remains is The Colony and the ecology is has cultivated. The Colony has grown over where the old facilities existed, but much of the valuable scrap remains in those abandoned interiors. The Company requires you to go in and collect what you can for quota - if you can make it out alive.
