Starting Items 0.4.0 — complete item catalog

An independent replacement for StartBonusMod, with the original ItemStringParser library used as an external dependency. No StartBonusMod source or binaries are bundled. Published under Pyroglaive. Includes the redesigned icon grid and the current Hallowed Concepts item types.

Press F6, or go to Options > Mod Options > Starting Items > Visual loadout editor > Open editor. The shortcut can be changed in Risk Of Options. Edit in the lobby before starting a run.

The editor uses a large scrollable grid of native item and equipment icons. Search by readable name, internal name, or effect. Click the White, Green, Red, Boss, Lunar, Void, Meals, Hallowed, Hexes, Pages, Other, Equipment, or Curios category directly. Void includes all void tiers. Other includes named items without a rarity, consumed variants and unrecognized custom tiers; internal hidden items and untranslated engine-only tokens are excluded. All items includes the full player-facing item catalog, including custom tiers from installed mods. Tier recognition uses the live DLC definitions so runtime tier-ID assignment does not hide or misclassify the new types. Cycle sorting between name, rarity, and quantity, then choose ascending or descending order. Selected only reviews your chosen loadout. Reset filters restores the full item catalog. Click any item card to open a scrollable details panel; hide it to return to the full-width grid. The footer keeps your item, equipment, and random-copy totals visible.

Set the Quantity step at the top with −100 / −10 / −1 and +1 / +10 / +100, or type a whole number from 1 to 1000. Each item card's + / − changes its quantity by that step, clamped from 0 to 1000. Reset step returns to 1. Shift-click temporarily changes by 5; Ctrl-click temporarily changes by 10. The details panel also lets you type the exact item quantity. Several items from the same tier can be selected. Adding an item enables the visual loadout and the mod. Counts save automatically after a short delay and when closing. Zero removes a selection. The Random tiers tab adds a random item from each selected tier, with its own quantity. Equipment selections fill only the survivor's available equipment slots and sets. Lunar equipment and player-facing elite aspects are included. Curios use one slot: selecting a different curio replaces the previous selection. Page loadouts automatically include the N'Tormat when the curio slot is empty, so their spells can be used.

Starter preset clears existing selections, then chooses two random white copies and one random green copy. Clear loadout requires a second click to confirm. Undo restores the loadout from before the last clear or preset. The gold override is editable in the footer. Enable it, then enter a whole number from 0 to 1,000,000. Existing 0.1.0 explicit tier selections migrate to individual item quantities once; random choices and advanced text remain intact. Legacy Risk Of Options tier selectors still add bonuses if used after migration.

F6, Esc, or Close closes the panel. It blocks gameplay input and clicks on menus underneath, keeps a stable cursor, and pauses single-player runs. Closing restores the prior game speed; opening an already paused game does not resume it. Multiplayer continues running. The visual editor is operated with mouse and keyboard; controller-only navigation is not implemented.

The host grants bonuses once per player per run, including late joiners. Deaths and respawns do not repeat the grant. Clients cannot grant items. Configuration changes affect future first spawns, not players who already received their loadout. Items disabled by existing run rules and expansion-disabled items/equipment are skipped. Explicit selections without vanilla rules, including runtime-assigned tiers and elite aspects, are supported when their expansion is enabled; this does not change the run's global drop tables. Equipment uses the survivor's current slots and accessible equipment sets.

Optional Starting gold replaces vanilla gold, scaled by difficulty. Optional Advanced loadout in Risk Of Options accepts ItemStringParser syntax such as 2xSyringe & Tier2; it adds to the visual loadout and tier selectors. Disable selectors to use only the advanced field. See the original parser documentation for tier and drop-table syntax. Each item is capped at 1000 copies across all inputs.

Install BepInExPack, RoR2BepInExPack, Risk Of Options 2.8.6+, Def ItemStringParser 2.0.0 and R2API Core 5.3.0+ with its dependencies. Disable StartBonusMod and previous local Starting Items copies before installing this release with a Thunderstore-compatible mod manager. Existing StartBonusMod configuration is not migrated; the new config is local.ror2.startingitems.cfg.

Build

Use .NET SDK 8, the installed game managed assemblies, BepInEx core DLLs, and the official Risk Of Options and ItemStringParser DLLs. From the source root:

dotnet build StartingItems/StartingItems.csproj -c Release -p:GameManaged="C:/path/to/game/Risk of Rain 2_Data/Managed" -p:LoaderRefs="C:/path/to/BepInEx/core" -p:RiskOfOptionsRef="C:/path/to/RiskOfOptions.dll" -p:ItemParserRef="C:/path/to/ItemStringParser.dll" -p:R2APIRef="C:/path/to/R2API.Core.dll"

The original mods retain their respective authorship. This implementation is separate from Def's StartBonusMod.

Current catalog and validation

Checked against the installed Risk of Rain 2 1.5.0#1210, Steam build 25475991, and the official October 8, 2026 patch notes.

The runtime catalog contains 5 Meal items, 11 Hallowed items, 14 Hexes and 8 Page entries, including the registered special Page entries. Each of those entries appears in its matching category. Consumed Page variants appear under Other. Curios include the N'Tormat. All non-hidden items with a rarity are included, and named items without a rarity are supported. The game still controls enabled expansions and existing item rules.

In-game verification passed for category completeness, search, sorting, quantity limits and increments, clear/undo, native icons, scrolling and resizing down to 1280×720. An actual single-player first spawn received a Meal, Hallowed item, Hex, Page, automatic N'Tormat and Lunar equipment. Existing disabled item rules were respected, repeated spawn callbacks did not duplicate the loadout, and cursor ownership and pause restoration passed without mod exceptions. Equipment initialization waits for newly granted curio attachments before sending another inventory event.

Full multi-client gameplay, every survivor and every individual item's effect have not been exhaustively tested.
