MasterBuilderHeeler

GitHub Release GitHub Downloads Last Commit Publish Status Thunderstore Nexus Mods Game: Valheim BepInEx Pack Jotunn ConditionalConfigSync Target: .NET 4.8 Client, Optional Server License AI Philosophy

In native Valheim, piece placement is limited to single-axis rotation in fixed steps from the player's viewpoint, with no way to tilt pieces, nudge placement offsets, align to a build grid, or reposition placed pieces without dismantling them. MasterBuilderHeeler adds 3-axis rotation, step scaling, piece nudging, ghost freezing, grid snapping, in-place piece editing, piece sampling, a tethered Build Camera, and HUD info panels.

Placed and edited pieces use standard Valheim network data, so the mod works in single-player and on unmodded multiplayer servers. When installed on a server, gameplay and reach rules can be synchronized across connected players.

Acknowledgements

MasterBuilderHeeler draws inspiration from the following Valheim mods and community members. Perfect Placement and Build Camera Custom Hammers Edition were probably the biggest in this regard because they were separate mods built on older foundations, not designed to specifically work together, and very notably, also no longer broadly available on modding platforms. This mod was written to bring precision placement and free-camera building together in a single, widely available, up-to-date mod for the community.

  • Perfect Placement: Standalone placement mod extracted from ValheimPlus and maintained as a standalone mod by Azumatt, no longer available on widely used modding platforms.
  • Build Camera Custom Hammers Edition: Originally created as Build Camera by gittywithexcitement and CookieMilk, updated by Vapok, and more recently maintained by Azumatt, no longer available on widely used modding platforms.
  • ComfyGizmo: Created by Bruce (ComfyMods). A widely used, respected community standard for 3-axis gizmo rotation with a focused feature set. If you only want gizmo functionality, you should use their mod ComfyGizmo on Thunderstore, it's great!
  • EulersRuler: Created by redseiko (ComfyMods), with appreciation for sharing ideas and inspiring the hover piece inspection panels. If you only need the hover/placement panels, you should definitely grab their very nice and lightweight mod, EulersRuler on Thunderstore.
  • Searica: Thank you for the encouragement and inspiration to put this project together. You can see all of their wonderful mods on Searica's Thunderstore page.

Features

Nudge, ghost freeze, in-place edit, and sampling need Precision Mode on. Grid keys work without it. Piece rotation, Precision and Roof Mode, frames, step, and grid settings stay how you left them when you put the hammer away or teleport, and only the nudge offset clears. Logging in or dying puts everything back to the configured defaults, and ResetBuildSettingsKey (F10) does the same for everything but Precision Mode. Set your preferred starting values under the Default settings.

  • 3-axis rotation: Rotate pieces across yaw, pitch, and roll in World or Local frames with a 3D ring gizmo, plus Corner Roof alignment for 45-degree roof slopes. Terrain tool pieces keep native rotation.
  • Step presets and scaling: Move through UltraFine, ExtraFine, Fine, Standard, and Coarse rotation and nudge steps, and scale step sizes up or down on the fly. Fine is the starting preset, and Standard matches the game's 22.5-degree rotation step.
  • Ghost freeze and piece nudging: Pin the placement ghost in place to inspect alignment from any angle, and nudge pieces along Local or World axes.
  • Grid snapping and overlay: Snap piece pivots or manual snap points to a configurable World or piece-anchored Local grid, with an optional terrain-following or flat grid overlay.
  • In-place piece editing: Move and rotate already-placed pieces without dismantling them while preserving container contents, sign text, item stand attachments, portal tags, and health. Support is recalculated at the new position, and unsupported pieces break. Honors ward access, no-build zones, and crafting station rules. The piece must be in the equipped tool's build menu, and containers stay locked during an edit. Place, repair, dismantle, copy, and the build menu are disabled until the edit ends, and the placement ghost gets its rotation back afterward.
  • Placement rules: Snapped, nudged, frozen, and edited pieces skip the base game rules for wood surfaces, floors, ceilings, non-supporting pieces, and required connections. Other base game placement rules still apply, and unsupported pieces still break. Build Camera range can technically exceed active loaded zones, so a placement check prevents placing outside the active zone.
  • Piece and rotation sampling: Select the aimed piece directly in the active build menu or copy a placed piece's 3D rotation onto the active ghost. PrecisionCopyBehavior sets how the sample keys work with native Copy Piece.
  • Build reach: EnableExtendedAvatarReach extends player placement, repair, dismantle, and in-place edit reach to MaxBuildReachDistance. ValidateStationRangeAtPieceLocation checks crafting station range at the target piece instead of the player. Both are off by default. MaxBuildReachDistance limits extended player reach and in-place edit, sampling, and hover targeting. Build Camera reach is the game's 50m raycast, otherwise limited by BuildCameraTetherRadius and workbench range at the piece. The Build Camera always checks station range at the target piece.
  • Build Camera: Free-flying camera tethered to the player while holding a build tool, with an optional spotlight, Wisplight-gated Mistlands mist clearing, and nearby item auto-pickup gated by active Comfort, ward access, carry weight, and inventory space. Move with the game's movement binds, with Jump and Crouch for up and down and Run for speed. The camera collides with terrain, rocks, trees, and pieces, or only with terrain and rocks while BuildCameraIgnoreCollision is on. It exits on death, teleport, or leaving build mode.
  • HUD info panels: Optional on-screen control panels and piece inspection readouts showing active bindings, piece name, prefab ID, health, structural stability, rotation, distance, and world coordinates.
  • Feature toggles: Turn off whole features, for example to keep only the Build Camera. EnablePrecision, EnableBuildCamera, EnableGrid, and EnableInfoPanels remove the feature, its keys, and its HUD rows, and apply live without a restart.

Configuration

[!NOTE] Gamepad bindings are not available yet for this mod. Gamepad configuration is coming soon.

Settings, keybindings, panel positions, and theme colors can be changed live using the BepInEx Configuration Manager (F1, installed separately) or by editing BepInEx/config/dreamwraith.MasterBuilderHeeler.cfg. The mod reloads the file when it is saved, without a restart:

Gizmo Colors / HUD Colors Client Color and opacity settings for 3D gizmo rings and arrows, HUD text roles, status indicators, and health/stability gradients.

Sync policies: Client settings are never synced and stay under each player's control. Conditional (Server) settings are server-controlled by default, and administrators can defer them to clients. Conditional (Client) settings are client-controlled by default, and administrators can enforce them. A section with more than one policy contains settings of each listed type. Only server administrators can edit server-controlled settings.

Keybindings: Mod keys can be rebound in the Keybindings (Keyboard & Mouse) section. Rotation uses the mouse wheel, and Build Camera movement uses the game's movement binds. While a build tool is equipped, the Global panel shows the active bindings. The Precision panel shows its bindings while Precision Mode is on.

Step sizes, grid overlay, camera feel, spotlight, panel layout, and colors are summarized in the section table above. Configuration Manager shows the default and range of every setting.

[!NOTE] Default keyboard bindings avoid native Build Mode controls and BepInEx Configuration Manager (F1), while Z, B, K, and L overlap with Valheim debugmode shortcuts (ToggleDebugFly, ToggleNoPlacementCost, killenemies, and removedrops). Players who regularly build with debugmode enabled should rebind those keys in Configuration Manager.

Compatibility

  • Multiplayer and single-player: Works in local worlds and on multiplayer servers, including servers that do not have the mod installed.
  • Optional server sync: When installed on a server with ConditionalConfigSync, administrators can enforce feature toggles, reach, Build Camera limits, Mistlands mist clearing, and auto-pickup rules while leaving keybindings, colors, camera feel, and HUD layout under each player's control. RequireHammerForHoverInspection is the exception, because it is server-controlled by default. Feature toggles are server-controlled by default, and administrators can defer any of them to clients. Policies can be customized in BepInEx/config/shudnal.ConditionalConfigSync/ConditionalConfigSync.SyncPolicy.cfg. Players without the mod can still join a server that has it. To require it, set it in BepInEx/config/shudnal.ConditionalConfigSync/ConditionalConfigSync.ModRequirements.cfg.
  • Input devices: Keyboard and mouse controls are supported for mod actions. Gamepad shortcuts for mod actions are not yet implemented. Gamepad players should set EnablePrecisionModeByDefault to off, because Precision Mode rotation uses the mouse wheel and ignores gamepad rotation.
  • Mod managers: Compatible with Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, and r2modman.

Compatible Mods

Tested with MasterBuilderHeeler:

  • Extra Snap Points Made Easy by Searica
    • Known issue: with its Manual, Manual+, or Grid snap mode on, a frozen ghost keeps snapping to whatever you're aiming at. Press the same key again to go back to Auto. Manual+ is on CapsLock by default, so it's easy to hit by accident. Working with Searica on a fix.
  • Advanced Terrain Modifiers by Searica

Incompatible Mods

MasterBuilderHeeler does not load when any of these mods is installed. Check the BepInEx log if the mod does not start:

  • Perfect Placement: Overlaps placement, rotation, in-place editing, and grid alignment.
  • Build Camera Custom Hammers Edition: Overlaps the Build Camera.
  • Infinity Hammer: Precision rotation and nudge just don't work with it installed. It's not really either mod's fault, it's a HarmonyX bug in the version BepInEx ships, and Infinity Hammer's patch on the game's placement code happens to set it off. BepInEx isn't updating HarmonyX on 5.x, so this stays blocked unless Infinity Hammer changes how it patches that method to avoid user confusion.

Overlapping Mods

These mods overlap with parts of MasterBuilderHeeler. Do not run the overlapping features together. Each mod should work if the listed feature is off, but these combinations are not tested:

  • ComfyGizmo: Overlaps 3-axis rotation and the gizmo. Set EnablePrecision to off.
  • EulersRuler: Overlaps the Hover and Placement panels. Set ShowPanel to off in Hover Panel and Placement Panel, or set EnableInfoPanels to off to remove all panels.

On a server with the mod installed, the Enable settings are server-controlled by default, so an administrator must change them or defer them to clients.

Installation

Mod Manager (Recommended)

Install through Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman. Dependencies are installed automatically.

Manual Installation

  1. Install BepInExPack Valheim, Jotunn, and ConditionalConfigSync.
  2. Download the latest release from GitHub, Thunderstore, or Nexus Mods
  3. Place MasterBuilderHeeler.dll into Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch Valheim.

Server Installation (Optional)

A server install is not required. To enforce settings across connected players, install BepInExPack Valheim, Jotunn, ConditionalConfigSync, and MasterBuilderHeeler on the server. Clients need ConditionalConfigSync with or without a server install.

On a headless dedicated server, the mod loads its settings for sync only. It applies no patches and runs no input, HUD, or rendering code. Saved changes to the server config file reload and sync to connected players without a restart.

Building from Source

Prerequisites:

  • .NET SDK.
  • A Valheim install. Standard Steam paths are detected automatically.
  • The Jotunn prebuild publicizes the game assemblies on the first build. DoPrebuild.props turns it on.
  • Build the .sln, not the .csproj. A direct .csproj build skips Environment.props and DoPrebuild.props.

Build using the .NET SDK:

dotnet build MasterBuilderHeeler.sln -c Release

The compiled assembly is output to bin/Release/net48/MasterBuilderHeeler.dll. Building with the Release configuration also creates a distribution zip in bin/Publish/.

The build references ConditionalConfigSync.dll from BEPINEX_PATH. Install ConditionalConfigSync in plugins/ or plugins/shudnal-ConditionalConfigSync/ under that folder before building.

Custom Paths

For custom installations, non-standard Steam paths, or mod manager profiles, copy Environment.props.example to Environment.props in the project root to configure your paths:

  • VALHEIM_INSTALL: Root Valheim installation folder.
  • BEPINEX_PATH: Root BepInEx folder (containing core, plugins, etc.).

Alternatively, you can set VALHEIM_INSTALL and BEPINEX_PATH as environment variables.

Packaging and Releases

Packaging and release automation are handled through .scripts/modtools.ps1 using the DW.ValheimModTools module:

  • Create a release: pwsh ./.scripts/modtools.ps1 release (builds Release, creates the distribution archive, extracts changelog notes, syncs repository secrets, and creates a GitHub Release, Draft by default).
  • Bump version and package: pwsh ./.scripts/modtools.ps1 package -Bump Patch
  • Publish to mod portals: pwsh ./.scripts/modtools.ps1 publish -Target All (uploads to Thunderstore and Nexus Mods).

For full script options and secret configuration, see .scripts/README.md.
