Tamed Wolf Balance 1.5.1 — New Tames Only

Tamed Wolf Balance is a standalone BepInEx mod package with a compiled DLL included. You can import this ZIP directly through r2modman using Import local mod. No Expand World Code, Expand World Prefabs, or Jotunn dependency. No manual compilation required.

What this version does

  • Applies only to vanilla adult Wolves that complete the normal in-game taming process after this version is installed and enabled.
  • Max health = that wolf's normal pre-tame max health x3.
  • Outgoing attack damage = normal outgoing attack damage x1/3 (exactly one third, not an approximation).
  • Preserves the current health ratio when taming completes. Example: 110/220 becomes 330/660.
  • Enrolled wolves save a dedicated marker and saved maximum health, so the same values persist across relogs and zone unload/reload.
  • Previously tamed wolves, and breeding wolves that are born or raised already tamed, are not enrolled retroactively.
  • Does not change wild wolves, other creatures, wolf speed, star level, attack animations, or follow behavior.

“Normal values” means the value the same wolf would have in your current game setup without this mod changing it. If you use mods such as Elite Creatures Reborn, the health baseline is whatever the wolf's normal maximum health already is when taming completes, and the mod then stores the x3 result as a fixed saved value. The damage multiplier is applied after Attack.ModifyDamage; final floating combat text can still be affected by the target's armor, resistances, and any later processing by other mods.

Installation

  1. Fully close Valheim.
  2. In the same r2modman profile, disable or remove all older Tamed Wolf Balance versions, including any old Expand World script-based edition.
  3. In Settings, use Import local mod, select this ZIP, then enable the imported package.
  4. Launch the game with Start modded.
  5. Find a not-yet-tamed vanilla adult wolf and complete the taming process from scratch.

The DLL inside the ZIP is correctly placed at:

BepInEx/plugins/TamedWolfBalance/TamedWolfBalance.dll

After import, r2modman may create its own package subfolder. That is fine as long as the DLL ends up under your profile's BepInEx/plugins path. Do not keep two Tamed Wolf Balance DLLs at the same time. If you previously installed the old script edition manually, remove only the files that belong to that edition, such as tamed_wolf_balance.cs and expand_prefabs_tamed_wolf_balance_bootstrap.yaml.

Multiplayer

For multiplayer, the host, every joining player, and the dedicated server (if used) should all run the same version of this mod. Wolf network ownership can move between players, so you should not rely on only one client having it installed.

How to confirm it loaded and applied

Your BepInEx LogOutput.log should contain:

TWB 1.5.0 READY | new tames only | HP x3 | damage x0.3333333 | 4 patches installed

When a new wolf finishes taming, you should also see:

TWB NEW TAME APPLIED | ZDO=... | normalMax=... | HP=.../... | damage=x0.3333333

  • No READY line: this version did not load correctly. Re-check that you imported it into the correct profile and launched the game with mods enabled.
  • READY exists but no NEW TAME APPLIED: verify that you tested with a newly tamed vanilla adult wolf, and that all multiplayer participants installed the same version.
  • PATCH FAILED appears: keep the full LogOutput.log from that run and treat it as not successfully applied.

No chat command or developer mode is required. The simplest real test is to record the same wolf's maximum HP before and after taming, and confirm that the health bar drops proportionally after it takes damage.

Validation and limitations

This package was built using user-provided BepInEx, Harmony, and Valheim reference assemblies. It passed DLL load validation, BepInPlugin identification, and four target patch/field type checks. It also passed logic checks covering new tame enrollment, current-health ratio preservation, duplicate-application prevention, persistent markers, exclusion of previously tamed wolves and breeding wolves, and the outgoing damage multiplier. These checks are not in-game or live multiplayer playtests; the current environment cannot launch Valheim.

Source

source/Plugin.cs is included for inspection and future maintenance. No action is needed for installation. The package does not include or redistribute the game itself, BepInEx DLLs, or Harmony DLLs.
