RustyHeathensQoL
Standalone Valheim QoL suite with six-row inventory, tiered proximity auto repair, safe quick stack, nearby chest crafting, food hotkeys, gear grave markers, and standalone equipment slots.Rusty Heathens QoL
A standalone Valheim quality-of-life mod built for the Rusty Heathens community. It combines everyday base-management helpers with an expanded player inventory, dedicated equipment slots, and a full-body character preview.
What's new in 0.5.4
Six-row normal inventory
The visible player inventory now uses the previously empty space and grows from 4 rows / 32 normal slots to 6 rows / 48 normal slots.
The Rusty dedicated slots remain separate:
- Head
- Chest
- Legs
- Back
- Utility x2
- Trinket
- Ammo x1
- Food x3
Characters coming from the previous Rusty four-row layout are migrated once so items in the old dedicated backing rows are moved into the new hidden backing rows before rows 5-6 become normal storage.
Carry-weight display clearance
The dedicated-slot / character-preview panel now leaves room for Valheim's carry-weight display instead of covering it.
Features
Tiered Proximity Auto Repair
Walk close enough to a usable repair station and damaged gear is repaired automatically. You do not need to press E or open the crafting station.
Repair stations inherit the repair capability of the tiers below them:
- Workbench repairs Workbench gear.
- Forge repairs Forge and Workbench gear.
- Black Forge repairs Black Forge, Forge, and Workbench gear.
- Galdr Table repairs all recipe-backed repairable gear covered by the repair hierarchy.
Normal station requirements still matter, including whether the station is usable and whether the item's required station level is available.
Safe Quick Stack
Press P near your base to move matching storage resources into nearby chests that already contain that item.
- Default range: 20 meters
- Only safe storage types are quick-stacked
- Weapons, armor, equipped items, food, ammo, and dedicated-slot items are protected
- Chests are network-ownership checked before changes are committed
Craft From Nearby Chests
Crafting, upgrading, and building can use materials from accessible nearby containers.
- Default range: 20 meters
- Requirement UI includes eligible nearby materials
- Player inventory is consumed first, then nearby containers
Food Slots and Hotkeys
Three dedicated food slots sit beside the character preview.
- Alt + Z - top food slot
- Alt + X - middle food slot
- Alt + C - bottom food slot
- Alt+X suppresses Valheim's normal Sit action for that keypress
When a vanilla food icon enters its flashing window, the mod displays EAT OR DIE! by default.
Standalone Equipment Inventory
RustyHeathensQoL includes its own equipment-slot system and does not depend on AzuEPI or ExtraSlots.
The six visible rows provide 48 normal inventory slots. Dedicated gear/food/ammo slots are backed by hidden rows inside the player's real Valheim inventory so normal save/load, weight, crafting, and tombstone systems can still see the items.
Valid armor, utility items, and trinkets auto-equip when their matching dedicated slot is empty. Spare gear stays in the normal inventory. Equipped gear can still be dragged back out and unequipped normally.
The inventory also includes a full-body character preview beside the dedicated slots.
Gear Grave Marker
If a tombstone contains real adventuring gear, a red GEAR death marker identifies the important grave. The special marker disappears when that tombstone is emptied.
Server-Controlled Gameplay Settings
In multiplayer, the server is authoritative for feature toggles, ranges, and the food warning text. The Quick Stack hotkey itself is client-configurable.
Installation
Thunderstore / r2modman
Install RustyHeathensQoL and launch Valheim modded. The BepInEx dependency is installed automatically.
Multiplayer
Install the same RustyHeathensQoL version on:
- the dedicated server
- every player client
For the inventory UI and server-authoritative QoL behavior, server and clients should stay on the same version.
Manual
Place RustyHeathensQoL.dll in:
Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/RustyHeathensQoL/
Updating from an older RustyHeathensQoL version
Version 0.5.4 changes the player inventory layout from four visible normal rows to six. The mod contains a one-time migration for the previous Rusty layout.
Before updating, make a backup of important characters. Then update both the server and clients to the same version before playing multiplayer.
Compatibility and Migration
Do not run RustyHeathensQoL alongside another mod that rewrites the player inventory grid, including AzuExtendedPlayerInventory, ExtraSlots, or ExtraSlotsCustomSlots.
Before switching from another inventory mod:
- Move everything out of that mod's extra/equipment/food/ammo slots into normal inventory or chests.
- Log out so the character saves.
- Disable/remove the other inventory mod.
- Install RustyHeathensQoL.
- Log back in and re-equip.
Before uninstalling RustyHeathensQoL, move items out of its dedicated slots first and save the character.
If another mod provides overlapping auto-store/quick-stack behavior, disable one of the overlapping features to avoid conflicting transfers.

Tested
Version 0.5.4 uses the R29 build tested in-game before this Thunderstore package was prepared. The six-row inventory layout and carry-weight display clearance were visually verified in the local Thunderstore test profile. The tiered proximity auto-repair work from the previously tested R27 build is preserved.
Credits
Inventory layout and interaction behavior were inspired by the excellent AzuExtendedPlayerInventory project by Azumatt. RustyHeathensQoL is a standalone implementation and has no runtime dependency on AzuEPI.
