EternalMeteor

The sky over Valheim is no longer safe. Every so often a meteor comes down near one of the players, burning across the sky for fifteen seconds before it hits, and everything around the impact is gone: people, creatures, houses, ships and forests. What it leaves behind is a smoking crater with a meteorite in it, packed with ore. If you want your base to survive, raise an EternalMeteor stone: its dome takes the hit for you.

Meteors

  • A meteor falls every 30 minutes of play, near a random player who is on the surface (never inside a dungeon). It lands between 80 and 500 meters from that player, on dry land, and it can land on bases.
  • The fall lasts 15 seconds. First a red glow far away in the sky and a low rumble. Then a burning rock about 4 meters wide crosses the sky, trailing fire and smoke, lighting the ground orange and shaking the camera more and more. A sonic boom comes 3 seconds before the impact.
  • Players within 400 meters get a warning on screen, and a pulsing red circle marks the 50 meter wide blast zone on the ground. There is time to run.
  • The impact: a blinding flash, a fireball, a shockwave, burning rocks thrown in every direction, smaller blasts across the area and a long roar. Players far away see the flash before the sound arrives.

The impact

Everything within 25 meters of the impact (a circle 50 meters wide), from 15 meters below it to 60 meters above, is destroyed:

  • Every living being dies: players, creatures and tamed animals. Bosses are spared unless the server turns that on.
  • Every build piece is destroyed, ships, carts, portals and wards included. Chests spill what they hold. Destroyed pieces drop no materials by default, so a flattened base does not turn into a pile of items.
  • Trees, logs, rocks, ore deposits, bushes and plants burn away.
  • Never touched: graves, EternalMeteor stones, meteorites, boss altars and boss stones, vegvisirs, traders, runestones and dungeon entrances.

A crater 24 meters wide and 4 meters deep is left behind, with bare scorched ground around it. It burns and smokes for a minute, then the fires die out.

Meteors also land where no player is nearby. There the server destroys the same things without any effects, and nothing drops: a chest destroyed in an empty area loses its contents. The crater and the meteorite appear when someone comes close.

The meteorite

In the middle of the crater a meteorite rises, about 4 meters tall, glowing red hot and smoking while the crater burns, then cooling down. Sparks in the colours of its metals rise from it, and hovering over it shows what it holds and how much. It can be mined with any pickaxe and, when it breaks, drops each material in stacks.

Each material has its own 30 % chance of being in a meteorite, so no two are the same, and every meteorite holds at least one. Ores come close to a full stack (30); bars come in fewer, since each one is worth two copper and a tin:

Material Amount Available
Copper ore 20 to 30 always
Tin ore 20 to 30 always
Bronze 8 to 15 always
Scrap iron 20 to 30 after The Elder
Silver ore 15 to 25 after Bonemass
Black metal scrap 15 to 25 after Moder
Flametal ore 10 to 20 after The Queen

The world's resource rate multiplies these amounts, as it does with every other drop.

On the map

Every meteor marks where it landed on the map of every player, with a meteor icon named Meteor (Meteoro with the game in Spanish), on the minimap and on the large map. The marker appears at the moment of the impact and stays until the meteorite is mined, then it goes away by itself. Players who join later, or after a server restart, see it too, and meteorites already lying in the world show up as well.

The markers are not saved in the players' maps: they cannot be removed by hand, a cartography table does not copy them, and nothing is left behind if the mod is removed. The server can turn them off with MapPins.

The EternalMeteor stone

A monolith of black stone carved with glowing runes, with a crystal floating and turning above it.

  • Built with the hammer next to a workbench: 10 Stone, 5 Fine wood and 4 Copper. It has its own EternalMeteor tab in the hammer menu, and it also shows under Misc and Defense, next to the ward.
  • It protects a circle 120 meters wide (60 meters around the stone), at any height. Hover over it to see that circle on the ground.
  • A meteor aimed inside the circle bursts against the stone's dome, high in the air, and the dome flashes into view for a few seconds. A burning fragment bounces off and comes down past the edge, where it lands with a normal impact. That blast never harms anything under any dome, and its crater always stays outside.
  • A meteor aimed just outside a dome lands a little further out, so its crater never digs into the protected ground.
  • Press the use key (E) on the stone to show or hide its dome, so you can see how far it reaches. Every player sees it, anyone can switch it, and it stays as you left it.
  • Meteors never damage the stone itself. Monsters can.
  • It is not a ward: it gives no build permissions and does not count as a base.

Console command

meteorshow (in the F5 console): a meteor falls on your position, with the whole descent. It works in single player, for the host, and for admins on a dedicated server, where the server checks its admin list. It does not need devcommands.

Installation

With a mod manager (r2modman, Thunderstore Mod Manager), install EternalMeteor; BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn come with it.

By hand, install BepInExPack_Valheim and Jotunn, then copy what is inside the zip's plugins folder into BepInEx/plugins/EternalMeteor. Keep the Assets and Translations folders next to EternalMeteor.dll.

In multiplayer the server and every player need EternalMeteor, with exactly the same version. The server decides every meteor and sends its settings to every player on connect.

Each player sees the mod's texts in their own game language: English and Spanish are included, and any other language shows English. The config file and the log are in English.

Configuration

The file is BepInEx/config/com.srcodex.eternalmeteor.cfg; Configuration Manager edits it in game (F1). Sections 1 to 4 are server-enforced: on a server only an admin can change them. Sections 5 and 6 belong to each player.

Section What it controls Defaults
1 - Meteors Random meteors on or off, how often, how far from the player, the fall time, sea landings, map markers on, every 30 min, 80 to 500 m, 15 s, dry land only, markers on
2 - Impact Blast radius and what it destroys, crater size, how long it burns 25 m radius; kills players, spares bosses; destroys buildings (no material drops) and nature; crater 12 m radius, 4 m deep, burning 60 s
3 - Meteorite Chance per material, the material list with amounts and boss keys, progression, pickaxe tier, health 30 %, the table above, progression on, any pickaxe, 300 health
4 - Protection stone Protected radius, bounce distance, recipe 60 m, 8 m past the edge (at least the crater radius + 2), Stone 10, Fine wood 5, Copper 4
5 - Effects Camera shake, screen flash, volume, burning debris, domes always visible on, on, 1, 18 rocks, off
6 - Debug Extra log detail off

The material list in section 3 uses ItemPrefab:min:max:requiredGlobalKey entries separated by ;. Any item of the game, or of another mod, can be added.

To test, set MinIntervalMinutes and MaxIntervalMinutes to 1, or use meteorshow.

Compatibility

EternalMeteor only adds postfix patches, on two game methods (game start and the item database), and its own meteorshow console command.

Wards from other mods do not stop meteors: only the EternalMeteor stone does.

Known limitations

  • What a meteor destroys where no player is nearby disappears without effects or loot, chest contents included.
  • Valheim's terrain can be lowered 8 meters at most, so very deep craters stop there.
  • The dome is drawn with the game's own shield effect from the Ashlands shield generator.

Changelog

  • 1.1.2: rebuilt and checked for Valheim 1.0.20; no gameplay changes.
  • 1.1.1: meteor sites marked on every player's map until the meteorite is mined; a meteor every 30 minutes (config files still on the old 40 to 90 move to 30 by themselves, values someone changed are kept).
  • 1.0.0: first release.
