Valheim Parry Sense
A shield under every enemy's health bar tells whether your block and your parry hold against its hardest hit, and how long before food wearing off makes them fail.Valheim Parry Sense
Know before the fight whether your shield will hold. Every enemy whose health bar is on screen gets a small shield next to it, facing the level stars, that tells you whether a plain block and a perfect parry would stop its hardest hit, and for how long they will keep doing so as your food wears off.
Reading the shield
| What you see | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Shield with a golden outline | Both a plain block and a parry hold. |
| Shield, no outline | Only a parry holds: a plain block gets you staggered. |
| Grey shield, red cross, outline | Only a plain block holds (tower shields cannot parry). |
| Grey shield, red cross | Nothing holds. Dodge. |
The shield stands for the parry. It turns from green to yellow to red as the moment it will fail comes near. The outline stands for the plain block and turns from gold to red the same way. Inside the warning window (5 minutes by default) the time left before the next loss is written next to the shield, in the colour of what is about to go.
How it decides
A block fails when the hit staggers you. The game staggers you when the damage that gets past your shield (blunt, slash, pierce and lightning) reaches a share of your maximum health. That makes maximum health, and so your food, part of blocking. The mod follows the game's own calculation:
- The enemy's hardest hit, over all of its attacks that can be blocked, counting its stars, attack multipliers, the last hit of a combo, its active buffs, the number of nearby players and the world settings.
- Your block power from the item you block with, your Blocking skill, the parry bonus and your active effects.
- What still gets through after the block, through your resistances and armour, which also fills the stagger bar.
- Your maximum health to come, from the way each meal wears off.
It assumes your stagger bar is empty and does not look at stamina. Damage from area effects that some attacks spawn is not counted.
