More Item Styles

The styling engine behind the More Item Styles add-ons.

A few items — the Wood Shield, the Silver Shield, the Linen Cape — let you pick a style before you craft them. Most do not. This adds that picker to items Iron Gate left plain.

This package adds no styles by itself. It is the shared engine; the items come from small add-on packages that sit on top of it. Install one of those and this comes with it.

Add-ons

  • More Item Styles - Lox Cape — seven colours for the Lox Cape.

More to come. If there is an item you want styles for, say so.

What it does

Given an item and a list of colours, it:

  • turns on the game's own style picker for that item's recipe, so the button appears at the workbench exactly as it does for a Wood Shield;
  • generates a tinted inventory icon per style from the vanilla icon, so no art ships with anything;
  • colours the equipped model, the dropped item, and the item on an armour stand;
  • gives every style a colour picker in the add-on's config, live while you play.

The colour is stored on the item itself, so it survives relogging, dropping, armour stands and being handed to another player.

Settings

Setting Default What it does
Enabled on Master switch for every registered item. Off leaves them exactly as vanilla. Already-crafted items keep their style and show it again when this is turned back on.
Log style visuals off Advanced. Logs each tinted model with its renderers, shaders and measured albedo. Useful when adding a new item, or when a style does nothing.

Per-item colours are not here — they live in the add-on's own config, under its own name.

Notes

  • Client-side. No server support needed, and it will not desync you. Other players do not need it; they see items in their normal colour.
  • Nothing is replaced. Style 0 is always the untouched vanilla item, so turning things off leaves a working item rather than a broken one.
  • Items that already have styles are left alone. If vanilla or another mod already gives an item a style picker, this does not touch it rather than renumbering someone else's styles.
  • One add-on per item. If two add-ons claim the same item, the second is ignored and says so in the log.

For mod authors

Adding an item is a small plugin. Take a hard dependency on wheeze.valheim.moreitemstyles and:

var item = new StyledItem("CapeLox", "Lox Cape")
    .AddStyle("White", "#383838")
    .AddStyle("Black", "#1A1A1A");

ItemStyles.Register(item, Config);

That is the whole integration. Colours bind into your config file, so they appear under your plugin's name in Configuration Manager. Call ItemStyles.Unregister(item) in OnDestroy.

Two things to know:

  • A colour is the item's albedo, before the game lights it. In daylight an item renders much brighter than the value you set, so good values look far too dark written down. Tune them in game with the sliders, not on a colour picker.
  • Style order is the variant index, and that index is stored on every crafted item. Append new styles; never reorder or remove them, or items already in the world change colour.
