Starborn Breeding – a rare star for a lucky litter

Breed your tame animals as always. Now and then the Norns smile on a birth: the newborn comes into the world with one star more than its parent. The chance is small, 1 in 30 by default, so a lucky cub is something to remember. Vanilla breeding cannot raise stars at all: a cub always gets its parent's level. With Starborn Breeding, patient breeding can lift a whole line of 0-star wolves to 2 stars.

Animal Newborn Lucky
Wolf (and Wolfborn) Wolf cub cub with one star more
Boar Piglet piglet with one star more
Lox Lox calf calf with one star more
Moose Moose calf calf with one star more
Hen Egg egg with one star more, the chick hatches with it
Asksvin Egg egg with one star more, the hatchling hatches with it

Animals from other mods that breed the vanilla way are lucky too.

A lucky birth

  1. Tame and feed your animals as usual. They fall in love and give birth as in vanilla.
  2. At every birth the Norns roll once. With a chance of 1 in 30 the newborn gains a star.
  3. If they do, every player within 64 m sees it, with a short chime and a golden glow on the newborn:

The Norns smile on your herd Wolf Cub – born with one star

  • It stays for life. A lucky cub grows into a lucky wolf, and a lucky egg hatches into a lucky chick that grows into a lucky hen. Their young inherit the new level, as in vanilla.
  • Sometimes twice. After a lucky roll the Norns roll once more. At 1 in 30 a newborn gains two stars with a chance of 1 in 900 (The Norns smile twice on your herd).
  • Two stars at most. No newborn rises above 2 stars, the highest level vanilla shows. A 2-star parent has 2-star young, as before. A 1-star parent can only gain one more.
  • You can tell them apart. A lucky animal or egg keeps a golden line in its hover text: Norn-blessed: one star more at birth. A star also changes how wolves, boars, hens, moose and asksvin look.
  • A star is worth it. The game doubles a creature's drops for every star, and a lucky animal is a real 1-star animal: it drops twice the meat, hide and feathers (four times at 2 stars) and has more health and damage. Measured in game: a lucky-born 1-star wolf drops 5.6 items per kill, a 0-star wolf 2.4.
  • Eggs of starred hens cook. In vanilla an egg of a 1-star hen (quality 2) does not count for any recipe: no cooked egg, omelette, pancakes or cupcakes. Starborn Breeding counts every egg, whatever its quality, and cooking takes ordinary eggs first, so a lucky egg you keep for breeding is the last one in the pan.
  • Nothing else changes. Love, pregnancy time, the number of animals in a pen and the food they need stay as in vanilla.

The real thing

Vanilla breeding (Procreation): a fed tame animal next to a partner collects love points (hearts) over time. After 3 (lox 4) it is pregnant, and 60 s later (lox 120 s) the young is born. The young gets the level of the parent that carried it. A wild 1-star wolf you tamed has 1-star cubs; the stars of the other parent do not count. Starborn rolls at exactly that moment and adds its star on top.

How often luck comes at 1 in 30:

Births At least one lucky newborn
10 29 %
21 50 %
30 64 %
68 90 %
100 97 %
ChanceOneIn One star more Two stars more
10 10 % 1 in 100
30 (default) 3.3 % 1 in 900
100 1 % 1 in 10 000

Configuration

BepInEx/config/zap.starbornbreeding.cfg

Luck (server-synced, admin only):

  • ChanceOneIn (30): a newborn gains a star with a chance of 1 in this number. 1 makes every birth lucky, 0 turns the luck off.
  • ChancePerAnimal (empty): own chances for single animals, for example Wolf:20, Lox:50, Hen:0. The parent's prefab name counts first, then the newborn's (Wolf_cub, ChickenEgg). 0 turns the luck off for that animal. Animals not listed use ChanceOneIn.
  • LuckCanRepeat (on): after a lucky roll, roll once more at the same chance for another star. Off: never more than one extra star per birth.
  • MaxStars (2): luck never lifts a newborn above this many stars. Raise it only with a mod that knows higher levels.

Client:

  • Announce (on): message and chime when a lucky animal is born near you.
  • ShowBlessing (on): the golden line in the hover text of lucky animals and eggs.

Multiplayer and compatibility

  • The player whose game runs the animal rolls, once per birth, as vanilla handles the birth itself. The level is stored with the animal, so everyone sees the same stars.
  • Every player and the server need the mod. Requires Jötunn.
  • Works with Wolfborn (their cubs are wolf cubs; a lucky one grows into a 1-star wolf). Tested with Feeding Troughs: lucky hens eat at the hen bowls like any other. Tested with Cluck Fighters: a lucky hen turns into a fighter with her star and keeps her blessing. Drop mods such as Drop That keep the game's drops per star. Dragons from Elemental Dragons hatch from found eggs, not from breeding, so the mod leaves them alone.
  • Starborn Breeding changes no prefab and adds no item. You can add or remove it at any time; animals keep their stars.

Deutsch

B. Wolf:20, Lox:50, Hen:0), LuckCanRepeat (zweiter Wurf, an), MaxStars (2).
