Sundials for Valheim's honest sun: a stone dial, a great sun circle for your base (granite, black marble or grausten) and a pocket ring dial. Real shadows tell the hour; align them by eye or the old way with chalk.
First release: a buildable stone sundial with an engraved bronze plate. Readings to the quarter hour with the Old Norse day marks, a moon shadow at night, and no shadow under clouds, at dusk or in the shade.
The sun circle: a paved stone circle almost ten metres across with a standing stone and thirteen hour stones, as the centrepiece of a base. Its hour stones are raised once north is found. On open ground it levels and clears the earth beneath it.
Each dial is made for the sky of its biome (45° in most biomes, 30° in the Mistlands, 55° in the Ashlands).
Alignment, once, by the equal-shadow method: chalk marks before and after noon. The dial tells you when the shadow nears the chalk circle, a chime calls you, and it says how precisely the alignment came out. Shared in multiplayer.
The quick way: Shift + mouse wheel turns a dial by hand, to be aligned by eye. A chalk layout on the sun circle shows where its stones will stand.
The sundial and the sun circle in three kinds of stone: granite, black marble (with gilded numerals on the sun circle) and grausten.
The ring dial (Bauernring): a pocket dial from the forge. Held up against the sun, a spot of light through its hole falls on the engraved hours. No north needed; one mark for morning and afternoon, vague at noon, like the real thing.
