LoxWagon

Build lox-drawn Cargo Wagon and Nomad Wagon variants using Valheim's native models and materials. Both use the same articulated four-wheel chassis, wide shafts and tamed-lox hitch.

0.10.2 applies the latest Nomad frame dimensions and corrects its fur normals, Core Wood mapping, lantern finish, cargo visibility and sleeping direction. Nomad construction is now disabled by default for testing. Set Wagon.EnableNomadWagon = true to make it available in the Hammer menu.

Cargo Wagon

  • 32 inventory slots in an 8 × 4 cargo hold.
  • 1,200 maximum health, with normal repair and dismantling.
  • An articulated four-wheel chassis with front steering and pitch movement for uneven terrain.
  • Wide shafts with attachment controls accessible along either shaft.
  • Crates and barrels that appear as the inventory fills, topped by a lox-hide cover at full load.
  • Three passenger seats: two facing forward and one facing backward.
  • A righting interaction for overturned wagons.
  • Configurable cargo weight, empty wagon mass, player pulling and optional flotation.

Both variants have rims 2.2 times their original width and spokes 1.5 times their original thickness. Hubs, axles, wheel positions, the wagon tub and shared handling remain unchanged. This is an iteration build; native appearance and interactions need an in-game review.

Nomad Wagon

"A covered traveling wagon drawn by a tamed lox, built for long journeys."

Enable Wagon.EnableNomadWagon, restart, then select Nomad Wagon in the Hammer menu to build a separate mobile camp. When disabled, existing saved Nomads still load and remain usable. This setting controls construction availability; it is not an administrator permission system. Existing cargo wagons remain cargo wagons.

  • 3,600 maximum health.
  • Four broad, slightly bowed Core Wood hoops, four smaller longitudinal poles and a rectangular center beam, with fitted rope bindings.
  • A permanent canopy of six staggered, overlapping lox hides using the Cargo Wagon's native rug materials. Four ropes cross over the hides and wrap the side rails.
  • A flat floor of wide transverse boards, fitted side lining and exactly two open rear steps.
  • A compact custom wooden travel bed with carved ends and layered native fur covers.
  • A functioning workbench with normal crafting, repairs, building range and support for nearby workbench upgrades.
  • 24 storage slots in a 6 × 4 grid, accessible through the wagon body and visible rear provisions.
  • Interior and exterior cargo that appears progressively as occupied inventory slots increase. Furnishings, front provisions, lights and the cover remain present at every load level.
  • Two native Dvergr lanterns with independent Lantern / Turn On / Turn Off interactions and saved states. Both have unlimited fuel and use native light settings. The rear lantern and chain swing from the center beam; the interior lantern rests on the front box.
  • Two forward-facing passenger seats, with no rear-facing seat.
  • Shelter inside the upright covered compartment, including while travelling.

Visible cargo progression

Appearance follows occupied slots, not item type, quantity within a stack, or weight. Withdrawing stacks removes the latest additions first. Each prop's ropes appear and disappear with it.

Occupied slots Additional visible cargo
1 Rear lower box
3 Rear barrel
5 Rear stacked box
7 Exterior bedroll
9 Right exterior barrel
11 Left exterior box
13 Left exterior barrel
15 Right exterior box
17 Second right exterior box
19 Plain wooden shield
22 Small barrel on the left box
24 Small box on the right barrel

The two small exterior pieces always appear after their supporting cargo. Empty Nomads retain the front provision box, its lantern and the front interior barrel. The cover never depends on cargo fullness.

Existing inventory migration: older 8 × 4 Nomad inventories are rearranged into six columns without dropping stacks or changing their contents. If more than 24 stacks exist, temporary overflow rows remain accessible. Withdraw the excess to return to four rows. Cargo Wagon storage stays 8 × 4.

Entry and sleep

The two broad rear steps end well above the ground. Jump aboard, or stop and unhitch, aim at the steps, and use Climb Aboard. The interaction uses ship-style boarding; the visible treads remain physical. Stop and unhitch before using the bed.

Aim at the bed:

  • Use: sleep, subject to Valheim's normal night, nearby-enemy, fire and wetness checks.
  • Alternate place + Use (normally Left Shift + E): lie down without skipping the night.

The bed preserves your existing respawn point. No mobile spawn point is created. The sleeping avatar faces feet toward the rear opening. Exit into the central aisle using the game's normal attachment controls. The lantern provides light; a nearby campfire is still required for sleep.

An in-game tarp-removal toggle and a distinct final Hammer thumbnail remain deferred. The cover toggle in the downloadable dimensioner is for inspection only; it is not a game setting. Existing in-game thumbnail generation remains, without exporting PNG files to the config directory.

Installation

Install LoxWagon through Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman. Required dependencies install automatically:

  • BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351
  • Jötunn 2.30.2

For manual installation, install those dependencies, then place LoxWagon.dll in Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/. Keep only one copy of the DLL installed.

Launch the game once to generate BepInEx/config/greypoint.loxwagon.cfg.

Build recipes

Select Cargo Wagon, or Nomad Wagon when enabled, in the Hammer build menu. Neither requires a crafting station.

Material Cargo Wagon Nomad Wagon
Fine Wood 80 40
Core Wood 30 20
Iron Nails 80 80
Barrel Hoops 4 4
Lox Pelts 16 12
Linen Thread 8 8

Construction materials are recoverable through normal dismantling.

Hitching and riding

  1. Bring a tamed lox to the front of the wagon.
  2. Aim at either wooden shaft or the central hitch and press Use to attach the nearby lox.
  3. Mount the lox using its normal saddle and ride to pull the wagon.
  4. Use either shaft or the central hitch again to detach.

Access the cargo hold from the wagon body. Move closer if the interaction asks you to. Both variants have two front bench seats; the Cargo Wagon also has a rear-facing seat.

Cargo and weight

The Cargo Wagon retains its established loading progression. Its full load and lox-hide cover appear at 31–32 occupied slots. Nomad progression is listed above. Cargo visuals do not add weight themselves.

Both variants use inventory weight for handling, independently of their appearance:

Total mass = BaseChassisMass + inventory weight × CargoMassScale

With the defaults, 1,000 inventory weight adds 300 mass to the empty wagon's 65, for a total of 365. Heavier loads are harder to pull; lowering CargoMassScale reduces their effect without changing storage capacity.

Righting an overturned wagon

When the wagon is tipped far enough, aim at its body, wheels or an interaction point and follow the Right wagon prompt. Use the game's alternate-place modifier with Use, normally Left Shift + E.

Detach the puller, stop the wagon and have passengers dismount first. Stand clear of the space the upright wagon and shafts will occupy. Recovery requires reasonably level, solid ground and enough room; a blocked attempt displays the reason. Righting preserves cargo and damage and leaves the wagon detached.

Configuration

The handling settings apply to both variants. Edit BepInEx/config/greypoint.loxwagon.cfg while the game is closed:

[Wagon]
AllowHumanPulling = false
BaseChassisMass = 65
CargoMassScale = 0.30
FloatOnWater = true
EnableNomadWagon = false
Setting Default Effect
AllowHumanPulling false Uses player pulling instead of lox hitching when enabled.
BaseChassisMass 65 Empty wagon mass. Supported range: 30–200.
CargoMassScale 0.30 Mass added per unit of inventory weight. Supported range: 0–1.
FloatOnWater true Enables water buoyancy.
EnableNomadWagon false Makes the experimental Nomad available in the Hammer menu. Existing saved Nomads remain usable when disabled.

Restart the game after changing settings. Updates preserve existing configuration values, so an older cargo scale stays in effect until you change it. New settings are added automatically on startup.

Flotation

Flotation is enabled by default with FloatOnWater = true. The intended waterline sits around the lower cargo bed, as if the hold were a boat hull, with the wheels and axles underwater. Buoyancy accounts for cargo mass. The wagon has no boat propulsion or sailing controls.

Set FloatOnWater = false and restart to disable buoyancy and let the wagon sink. Existing configurations retain their saved value: if upgrading from 0.8.2 with flotation disabled, change it to true to enable it. Righting requires solid ground beneath its destination.

Multiplayer and compatibility

Install the same mod version on the server and every client, with matching configuration settings. Multiplayer testing is ongoing, particularly hitch ownership changes, reconnects and seat occupancy.

BeastsOfBurden and HUDCompass are optional. LoxWagon includes compatibility handling for these mods, but does not require either one.

Known limitations

  • Nomad collision uses simplified floor, frame and furniture contacts. Native texture appearance, bed animation alignment, stair traversal and Nomad rollover recovery still require testing.
  • Cargo collision follows simplified shapes; small gaps and fur edges are not exact collision surfaces.
  • Extreme slopes and uneven obstacles can still tip the wagon. Recovery may require moving away from obstacles or onto better footing.
  • Visible wheel rotation is not animated.
  • Multiplayer remains under testing.

Updating

Update through your mod manager, or replace the existing DLL for a manual installation. Existing wagons keep their prefab identities and inventories when their display names change. The Nomad Wagon has its own saved prefab identity. Restart all multiplayer participants after updating.

For the Nomad test build, follow TESTING.md. See CHANGELOG.md for release changes. Source code and validation tools are included in the package.
