LoxWagon

Build a lox-drawn cargo carrier or a covered travelling camp using Valheim's native models and materials.

0.10.8 is a public testing release for Thunderstore. LoxWagon is pre-1.0 and intended for continued singleplayer testing. Multiplayer is unverified and is not supported for this release.

Cargo Wagon Nomad Wagon
Storage 32 slots, 8 × 4 24 slots, 6 × 4
Maximum health 1,200 3,600
Default empty mass 65 100
Passenger seats Two front, one rear Two front
Equipment Visible crates, barrels and a full-load hide cover Covered cabin, bed, workbench, lanterns and furnishings

Both wagons have an articulated four-wheel chassis, a tamed-lox hitch, configurable cargo weight and optional flotation. Their visible cargo changes with the number of occupied inventory slots.

New in 0.10.8

The front covering returns to its 0.10.5 shape and frame attachments, with the native lox rug's wispy fur layer. The main roof keeps its existing coverage and dominant large lox skin.

The rear entrance roll has a close lox-fur wrap, compressed beneath its lashings, with no loose hanging flap. Its exposed ends and the port cargo roll's ends now show layered rolled fabric. The decorative rope coil beside the port cargo roll is removed.

Floorboards, rear steps and divider boards use varied native wood-floor plank samples. Grain direction, crop and restrained color variation differ between boards, avoiding the repeated short tile along each plank.

Righting is slightly more forgiving of residual movement and uneven ground. The wagon must still be detached, nearby riders must dismount, and the upright body and shafts must have clear space.

Banner cycling and gravity, independently swaying spice strands, the workbench, rear corner returns, bed platform, orange lanterns and switchable cover collision are retained. Storage, recipes, mass and saved customization choices are unchanged. Idle footing aboard the Nomad still needs public gameplay testing.

Installation

Install with Thunderstore Mod Manager or r2modman, including these dependencies:

  • BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2351
  • Jötunn 2.30.2

For a manual installation, install the dependencies and place LoxWagon.dll in Valheim/BepInEx/plugins/. Keep only one copy of the DLL installed. Launch the game once to create BepInEx/config/greypoint.loxwagon.cfg.

Building a wagon

Both Cargo Wagon and Nomad Wagon appear in the Hammer menu. Neither requires a crafting station. Construction materials are recoverable through normal dismantling.

Material Cargo Wagon Nomad Wagon
Fine Wood 80 120
Core Wood 30 80
Iron Nails 80 160
Barrel Hoops 4 8
Lox Pelts 16 24
Linen Thread 8 24

Hitching and riding

  1. Bring a tamed lox to the front of the wagon.
  2. Aim at either wooden shaft or the central hitch and press Use to attach it.
  3. Mount the lox with its normal saddle and ride to pull the wagon.
  4. Use a shaft or the central hitch again to detach.

Passengers can use the bench seats. To enter the Nomad cabin, jump onto the rear steps, or stop, unhitch and use Climb Aboard at the steps.

If a wagon overturns, detach the puller and have passengers dismount. Aim at the wagon and follow Right wagon, using alternate place + Use, normally Left Shift + E. Recovery needs enough space and reasonably level, solid ground. It preserves cargo and damage and leaves the wagon detached.

Using the Nomad Wagon

  • Inventory: use the wooden chest just inside the rear opening on the workbench side. It opens the wagon's single 24-slot hold.
  • Workbench: craft, repair and build within its normal station range. Nearby workbench upgrades can improve it.
  • Bed: stop and unhitch, then use the bed to sleep. Alternate place + Use lets you lie down without skipping the night. Normal night, fire, enemy and wetness checks apply. Your respawn point stays unchanged.
  • Lanterns: turn the interior and rear lanterns on or off independently. They need no fuel and do not provide campfire heat.
  • Cover: use the rolled hide over the rear opening to hide or restore the roof and front covering together.
  • Banner: use the end of the skinny upper starboard pole to cycle through native banners and None. The pole extension appears with a banner.

Lantern, cover and banner choices are saved per wagon. The upright covered cabin supplies shelter and a minimum of comfort 5, preserving higher comfort from nearby objects. Normal resting requirements still apply. Removing the cover removes the wagon's shelter contribution and its roof/front-hide collision.

Furnishings, front provisions and lights remain when the inventory is empty. Extra cargo appears as slots fill and disappears as they empty. Independent native spice-rack strands appear progressively at 5, 13 and 24 occupied slots. Appearance follows occupied slots, independently of item type, stack size or weight. The Cargo Wagon's full-load hide cover appears at 31–32 occupied slots; the Nomad's cabin cover is independent of its inventory.

Configuration

Close the game before editing BepInEx/config/greypoint.loxwagon.cfg, then restart. These settings apply to both wagons. Existing configuration values are retained when updating.

Setting under [Wagon] Default Effect
AllowHumanPulling false Enables player pulling at the hitch.
BaseChassisMass 65 Cargo empty mass, clamped to 30–200. The furnished Nomad adds 35.
CargoMassScale 0.30 Mass added per unit of inventory weight, clamped to 0–1.
FloatOnWater true Enables buoyancy, with the wheels and axles underwater.

Total mass is the empty mass plus inventory weight × CargoMassScale. With the defaults, 1,000 inventory weight produces a total mass of 365 for the Cargo Wagon and 400 for the Nomad. Heavier loads are harder to pull. Existing Nomads use the increased base mass when reconstructed after updating.

Flotation provides buoyancy only; the wagon has no sailing controls or boat propulsion. Set FloatOnWater to false to disable it.

Updating and reporting problems

Update through your mod manager, or close Valheim and replace the DLL manually. Current Cargo and 24-slot Nomad inventories use the game's normal save system.

Older 32-slot Nomad test builds: empty those wagons before updating. Automatic conversion and temporary overflow rows have been removed.

For this release, please check the restored front covering, wispy lox fur on the rear roll, exposed rolled ends and varied wood on the floor, steps and divider. Try righting on mildly uneven ground and check that nearby obstacles still prevent unsafe placement. Continue testing cover collision and camera behavior, standing aboard a moving Nomad, banner cycling, independent spice-strand sway and real save/reload behavior.

When reporting a problem, include the mod version, what happened, steps to reproduce it and BepInEx/LogOutput.log. Screenshots are useful for geometry or material problems. See CHANGELOG.md for changes.

Current limitations

  • This is a pre-1.0 singleplayer test release; multiplayer validation remains outstanding.
  • Cabin materials, prop placement and movement are still being refined.
  • Collision uses simplified shapes. Small gaps and fur edges are not exact collision surfaces.
  • Extreme slopes and obstacles can tip the wagon. Recovery may require clearer, more level ground.
  • Visible wheel rotation is not animated.
  • The rear roll toggles the cabin cover; it does not unroll across the rear doorway.

BeastsOfBurden and HUDCompass are optional. Existing compatibility handling remains, but neither is required.
