BetterMultiplayer
If you're looking for mods that make the most out of this game without fundamentally changing the experience, this is the right modpack. If you ever get bored and want to add a few extra characters and Starstorm, you can do that and rely on the fact that this modpack consistently contains all of the good stuff that makes your multiplayer experience better.
The Mods
Fundamental mods in this pack include mods that increase the max player count, allow friends to join mid-game, and allow you to "pause" multiplayer games in case of the occasional interruption. There are also some nice additions to the UI experience, such as BetterUI (which provides a general improvement, and is highly customizable) and CommandQueue (which overall cuts down the amount of time you're standing around picking items, giving you more time to enjoy the game).
