SMGs were developed in the final years of WWI after the machinegun had already been widely used; the idea was to scale down automatic weapons for infantry use, making them useful in trench raids and aggressive maneuvers. Only the MP18 and Villar Perosa were made and deployed in large numbers, the rest are either prototypes or arrived too late in the war to have much impact.
